When you find which run of these work best for you, nothing else comes close to being able to do what this disc does; laser straight long flights that creep into distance driver distances. However, flights can very a lot pending on run and the plastic you get this disc in and as you can expect with high glide and a very neutral flight, this disc doesn't handle stronger wind well. Other than that, some people may not like this disc because the inside of the rim does have a slight feel of a "plus" mold (the rim is a bit thicker near the flight plate, and thinner at the bottom of the wing. For reference, Discmania MD3's also have the "plus" mold feeling). I personally bag 2 Rivers at all times, but if I weren't so attached to other molds on the more understable and stable side of the flight spectrum, I could cover all but the more overstable side of the spectrum with just the River.
Moonshine (older version that doesn't glow as well as the more recent iteration of trilogy's moonshine plastic) and gold line are very understable, but don't immediately flip over. They start to turn slowly, and just continue to turn over the entire flight while slightly flattening out at the tail end of the flight. I'd rate these plastics/runs as 7, 7, - 2.5, 0.5. I don't personally bag these since this slot is held by my Elasto Underworld that has been in my bag for years. Within this slot, you could also throw the L64 Maul, and both the Underworld and Maul feel very similar to the River in your hand.
Opto is a little more stable than moonshine or Gold line, and even though Opto always seems closest to the flight ratings L64 puts on their discs; I feel like opto Rivers fly closer to a 7,7,-2,1 rating brand new.
Frost starts out flying true to the flight numbers (7,7,-1,1), but when this beats in and the flashing on the underside of the wing wears down, these Rivers are great for relatively strait shots that finish slightly right of center when thrown right hand backhand. The Frost River I have bagged since 2015 falls into the more understable description here, and although it's hit a ton of trees and seen a lot of wear, the flight really hasn't changed since the flashing on the underside of the wing has worn down, and I'd rate the flight I see for this disc at 7,7,-2,1. As much as I absolutely love the flight and feel of this plastic and I have a sizable amount of replacements for it, every time I throw it I'm slightly terrified I'm going to lose this disc because trilogy discontinued Frost/Fluid/Elasto plastic in 2015, and to my knowledge there are no plans to ever bring back this plastic in the future.
New moonshine (the newer version that's more opaque and glows better than the Moonshine trilogy used from 2015 through 2021) is close to true to the 7,7,-1,1 flight numbers; it just has a little less glide and a lot less dome than any other River I've thrown. Right now, I'd put the flight ratings for this run of Rivers at 7,5.5,-0.5,1.5, but I've only had mine for a couple months, so I don't know exactly how this discs will beat in just yet. Although I've only had it a few months, this run immediately found its way into my bag though, and I almost feel like they retooled the mold before this run since it has a much higher parting line, and can handle wind much better than most other Rivers I've thrown; which I'm convinced is due to this run having just a little less glide than the other Rivers I've thrown. Shockingly, the parting line of this run is higher than the more stable Opto-X Rivers I've thrown.
Opto-X is the most stable plastic I've had for Rivers, but by no means is it a meat hook. I'd rate the flight as 7,7,0,1.5 for these. Athough I do love this run, Opto-X Rivers have become a ton harder to find since the pandemic started, and since this is only a little more overstable than the new Moonshine I currently bag, I haven't bagged this plastic for close to a year (with the months between taking this out of my bag and bagging the new moonshine ones having this slot being covered by the new C Line FD's).
Overall the River is an outstanding disc, but like Destroyers you really have to know what to look for in order to find the run to fill the slot in your bag that you're looking for since the flight can change pretty significantly pending on the type of plastic and the run itself. This is the only reason I rated this as "somewhat beginner friendly" as opposed to "very beginner friendly". When you do find the right run that fits the slot you're looking for though, this disc acts as my "true North" disc that doesn't hide poor form or putting too much hyzer or anhyzer on my releases since it can fly so strait. Overall, I'd say the flight rating is dead on with this mold; but keep in mind that this average is skewed towards being more stable because of the Frost and Opto-X versions I have, both of which have been permanently discontinued (Frost), or have become hard to find (Opto-X).
