I've had my Champion Firebird for 5 plus years now, and it is still going strong. Beefy, but not by no means uselessly bricklike. Backhand it flies straight with no turn and finishes with a dumpy fade and a big skip. Forehand it flies straight with little to no turn then fades dependably at the end, though not as pronounced as backhands. It is an awesome OS fairway driver. Great for wind fighting and overhead shots as well.

Let me preface this review by saying I do not like the feel of this disc in my hand. For the overstable and reliable fairway driver slot, the fireball simply feels much better in my hand and is, in my experience, a lot more consistent between runs. But the firebird is probably one of the most iconic and important discs in the game! Truly reliable and something that every player should have in their bag! And it's shaped the game and inspired tons of discs in this category. So while I can acknowledge the importance of this disc, it just doesn't suit my hand and will therefore not get more than 3,5 stars.

The Innova Firebird is a great OS fairway driver for any intermdiate to advanced player. It is predictably overstable, but can still be shaped unlike some other OS fairways on the market.

When compared to other discs with similar numbers like the Discmania Splice or the Discraft Predator, I have found the Firebird to have a less sharp fade, while still being undeniably overstable. This quality makes this disc perfect for shots that hang out wide and then fade towards the basket.

Overall, the Firebird has a very nice, shapable overstability once beaten in a bit. For this reason it has earned a spot in my bag.

I got this disc used and It has filled a gap in my bag. The closest discs to it were a zone or a destroyer. It feels really nice for forehand but flies well with backhand too. Really good disc.

The Firebird is just the best forehand disc on the market for what it is intended to do, full stop. I opted for Champion plastic to increase its overstability as much as possible and increase its skip potential and both work as intended. If you need a disc to turn a corner or get you out of a jam by throwing a flex shot, this is the one. There's a reason everyone uses 'em...join in!

I have the "Firebread" stamp which I think is hilarious. I ordered two, both 173-175g. They are significantly less stable than some other firebirds that I have thrown and have quite a bit more of a shoulder dome. I still love these for both forehand and backhand, and can get a bit of turn and still that reliable firebird fade. This disc is my go to for 240-275 forehand shots and 280 backhand where I need a really reliable fade at the end. One of the most thrown discs in my bag and even with this oddly understable run I will always still bag them. I did purchase a very flat draco to be my absoulte meakhook though.

I highly reccomend the firebird for people trying to nail down a reliable forehand distance. This is really just a big boy zone in many ways.

My first disc (started as a sidearm dominant player).

This disc has almost always been in my bag or something comparable (Felon when i tried Trilogy, Flick before the hellfire and raptor were made).

A true staple and keystone (Ha! Disc golf puns) in any players bag.  I bought mine from a gas station and fell in love.

The Firebird is pretty stable, as the flight numbers and flight chart might suggest. I would only recommend it for beginners as a utility forehand disc for tight shots around a corner, but for people with a little experience, this is a really good disc for headwinds! My champion firebird hit a lot of trees in a local wooded course so it flies straighter now, but even that took about half a year being thrown by an inaccurate player to get there. My star firebird feels really good as well, but champion is my preferred plastic for this disc (now I have 2!)

Absolutely love this disc. This was one of my first discs that was recommended to me as I am mainly a forehand player. This has a very predictable flight path and is repeatable time after time again. I have found that this disc is extremely versatile and is one of my main discs to play with in the wind as it can fight the crosswinds quite well. I have recently gotten a Nate Sexton firebird and love it just as much as my champion firebird. I have recommended this disc for anyone that has asked for forehand/windy-day discs.

    A perfect disc.

I've had 5 firebirds. 3 champs, 1 star (lost), and a sexybird. I bag two currently, a red champ and the sexton. My red max weight champ firebird is my favorite and I use it every round. The sexton is less overstable and used when I want less skip or fade (probably 15% of the time). I use them both forehand and backhand. This is not a disc I would give to a beginner because it can reinforce bad habits and poor technique. I suggest learning backhand with a putter (or roc/other neutral midrange) and forehand with a buzzz. Once you have decent form (not even crazy distance, just clean form), getting a firebird because, as you learn it, you unlock so many cool and useful shots. Dog legs, spike hyzers, skip shots, overhand, wind brawlers, flick rollers, etc. I'm primarily a RHBH player but one of the most valuable shots in my arsenal is a standstill or one-step 150-275 ft RHFH firebird. (Max FH golf-line with a destroyer is 350')

People don't talk about it but this disc is also an invaluable tool in the woods. Pair it with a understable fairways for that but pair the two together and you're golden flippier driver and you're set. Many wooded courses have several holes that have baskets off to one side or the other with a small gap to hit. Enter firebird. Throw it FH or BH depending on the basket position and not worry that it will turn over and deviate from the line and just let it fade to the basket for a simple putt.

If I could only have 4 discs, it'd be my yeti aviar, dx roc, star destroyer and innova firebird.

Have you heard of the Firebird?

Kidding... obviously this disc is legendary, and it'll probably always be considered one of the greatest if not THE greatest overstable control driver in Disc Golf History. I definitely tried to not have a Firebird in my bag, but it's definitely nice to have... not to say other stuff on the market isn't good! I'd be more than happy to pick up an FD3 and try that out in comparison. Regardless, this is one of the greats, and if you haven't tried one, can you even be considered a true disc golfer? Maybe you can... just not by Nate Sexton :P

I've had 2 firebirds at this point, the first one was pretty domey and in star plastic. It wasn't quite as over stable as I was looking for and would turn over, especially into a headwind. I now bag a flatter toped champion firebird and it flys exactly how I'd like it to. It is a great wind fighter and great for big hyzer shots that need a little bit of skip at the end.

The utility disc that all others strive to be. The standard of comparison. The firebird is the go to disc for windy day drives, spike hyzers and forehands. And they just get better as they break in. The firebird is extremely reliable and wont let you down when you reach for it.

The Firebird is a fine disc and the numbers are spot on. It is an overstable driver with a reliable fade. I prefer the Infinite Scepter as it functions similar in backhand throws, but is better for overhand throws. I suggest you test out both and see which one feels more comfortable for you. I prefer the Scepter, but the Firebird is a beloved classic for a reason.

The firebird is the classic overstable/utility fairway driver that seemingly everyone wants in their bag. There's a reason every company seems to have a firebird copy cat, because these things sell. What can I say about the firebird that hasn't already been said... its reliable, its beefy as hell, it fades, and it'll make you feel like you can actually throw pro-level forehands by correcting for all of that off-axis torque that you love to impart on your discs. The firebird feels great in my hand and none of the other copy-cats that i've thrown so far have given me the same confidence. Maybe that's because it was the first of this type for me to throw, but there's no disc in my mind that feels better on a forehand drive.

For beginners, don't expect to get much distance out of this thing. Throw it RHBH for some good laughs and to see what it does and then keep it in your bag for when you need that hard fading shot (forehand or backhand). I think beginners can get a lot out of this disc for that reason, when scrambling this thing will get you out of trouble.

For players with elite power, there's so much you can get out of this disc, from huge flex shots to dog-leg turns, and they keep their stability forever. Great in the woods. As they season they just get straighter and straighter. Great disc, and as others have said: there are many like the firebird, but only one firebird.

Very overstable disc. I use it mostly as a utility disc of sorts on longer shots. Great tool for a RHFH fade to the right or a RHBH fade to the left shot when thrown flat. I also overhead this thing out of the woods sometimes and works well. Usually in my bag.

I would suggest the firebird for intermediate to advanced players unless you are just using it as a utility disc. The firebird is way too overstable for any beginner to handle and it will just dump off quickly. For those with good forehands, you will love the firebird. I would highly suggest it. The Firebird can handle a lot of torque and if you are looking for a big skip this is a perfect disc. This disc is also great for big flex shots that you can shape lines with easily. This is also one of my favorite discs in the wind, this is probably the most reliable disc I have ever thrown perfect for windy rounds. If you need a disc to cut around a corner quickly this is also a great disc. The last great thing about the Firebird is that it is a great utility disc for random shots that you may need its high overstability.

This disc is the GOAT for forehands. The flat top gave me 40 feet more power than a thunderbird, and allows for ginormous flex lines when thrown a little anhyzer. I was rocking with Thunderbirds exclusively before giving this a shot, and my oh my are they different. Stepping up to a teepad with a Firebird in hand is a top tier feeling when sizing up a forehand line on a drive.

Really can't say enough about this thing.

As a beginner, I found this to be a great disc for specific shots to get around obstacles. It consistently does what I expect it to, and that's what I love about it. For me it works well for both backhand and forehand shots. I started with a max weight firebird, but felt it was too heavy for me (plus the disc colors made it blend into leaves)...  I now have three of these in 150g (my kids like to use them once in a while (they're ages 8 & 10), while they don't have the speed yet, they like seeing what I can do with it and so they wanted one too.

This thing is a meat hook. It has a fade that will bring the disc back to the target on even the most arrant shots that makes its ideal for huge flair skips and spike hyzers. One of the best utility drivers around with the most consistent flight pattern and characteristics regardless of wind conditions. There is a reason all of the top pros bag these. If you are a beginner, do not pick one of these up just yet, as all it will do is burry itself off somewhere on the side of the fairway. However, it will become one of your favorites for exciting shot types.

Probably the best utility disc anybody could have. It fades predictably for the beginner but might flip up just a tad for those throwing it 350< depending on how much dome it has.

On a separate note, the flatter, stiffer runs of these are terrific for any sort of forehand and overhand shots. Personally, I thumb, forehand, and forehand roll mine and it does a terrific job for all three.

The champion firebird is what it is. For me, it doesn't get thrown often but I keep it because it always doesn't what it's supposed to do. It's very overstable, fights the wind, and gets around a corner really well. I've got 350-400 foot power but have never gotten much forward progression out of this disc. I suppose it's not really designed for that unless you're Nate Sexton. I like that the rim is a bit narrower being in that 9 speed category, and it feels pretty comfortable in the hand. If these descriptions fit what your looking for, give it a shot. Having an overstable driver that won't go very far may not be the most fun or satisfying shot to throw, but you'll be glad you have it if you need it

From my perspective it is great for forehands. I've been playing for less than a year and it's taken me that long to figure out stability ratings and the value of having variety in the bag. After playing religiously for several months and having come to love the Teebird, I now appreciate what a great disc the Firebird actually is. *Predictability* is the key, as several others have pointed out. The Firebird is GOING TO FADE and, if you have a wimpy arm like I do, it's going to fade with a quickness. However, the predictability of the disc will become invaluable to you once you understand what it does. You're a RHBH thrower playing a hole with a fairway that requires you to go right then left? The Firebird is your disc. A little arm throwing a HUGE anhyzer will land you in the fairway every time, to say nothing of the disc's ability to hold a big anny flick/roller line. In short, the Firebird is a MUST HAVE disc if you're a serious disc golf player. Put it in your bag.

One of the most consistent discs you can buy, if you need a disc to fade even with a strong headwind, this is the one. If you need a disc to fade around a corner and give you a massive skip this is the one. If you need a disc to throw am extremely precise hyzer/spike hyzer, this is the one. The main drawback is that since they tend to be super OS, they naturally aren't very beginner friendly.

I picked up a factory-second Champion Firebird as I had heard it was a must have disc. After throwing it for a couple months and having it in my bag, I will say that this is a great disc to have in your bag. However, this disc is not for beginners. I picked up this disc after playing at least once or twice a week for about 6 months, and it took me a good bit of time to realize the potential of this disc. Truthfully I doubt that I have seen all this disc has to offer. What I love about this disc is how incredibly overstable it is. Almost any line you put the Firebird on will see a fade left (RHBH). This is an incredibly valuable disc to have in your bag due to the fact that you will always know what this disc is going to do for you. I also feel the need to note that as a RHBH player, I found it surprisingly easy to flick this disc. When I started throwing this disc, most of my forehand drives would come out wobbly, but this disc would always leave my hand smoothly and carry on until it crashed into the ground. In conclusion, this disc is the super overstable driver that everyone says it is. If you are looking for a consistent fade in your bag, I would highly recommend this disc.

2020 was a very difficult year, perhaps trivially and least of all because James Conrad left Innova for MVP discs. Why is that sad, you ask? He is earning more money, growing his brand, and letting Innova branch out into a new generation of players. Well listen, dude, I'm sad because no one threw the Firebird better. I'm fully willing to argue this with anyone, anywhere, at anytime. I think James Conrad threw it best because he could make it do what we only dream of getting a Firebird to do. Huge force-over/anyhzer shots to conquer left to right doglegs? Perfect. Headwind approach from two hundred fifty feet that drops hard left out of the sky right on time? Flawless. Really, until you get to the Ape, you'll realize this is about as fast and beefy as you'll want to go. Obviously, this is an expert rated disc. I don't have the best rating, so take this with a grain of salt. I do believe, though, it's not my fault. The Firebird is an overstable monster in a VERY high speed mold considering the stats, and I think any poor throw with this disc is my fault more so than it would be with any other disc. You need the rare combination of mindless power and an artists finesse to get the most out of the disc. Maybe ten percent of my shots with the Champ Firebird went the way I really wanted them to. Give me a couple more years, and I'll probably manage to get more out of it. The Firebird feels like a secret society in the annals of disc golf, perhaps lead in principled agreement by Nate Sexton. To get the most out of a Firebird means your game is probably good enough to really consider the higher division in the upcoming tournament.

PROS: The last sentence is the nicest thing I think you can say about a disc.

CONS: Featured prominently in enough online Disc Golf coverage to fool players into thinking you can use it regardless of skill level. That is not the case.

This is the best overstable fairway driver in disc golf, hands down.

This disc is consistent, reliable, and is a must-have for any disc golfer looking to play competitively. No other company comes to close to this disc, even though some may try. The disc is great for power forehands, backhands, thumbers/tomahawks, forehand rollers, skip shots, and flex lines. The disc can do it all, no matter what the wind is doing that day.

I would recommend the champion firebird. If you are a person that like to throw forehands, I would bag two: a regular champion firebird and a flat top firebird (for the flat top, try to get a gummy plastic for longevity). The traditional champion firebird is at it's best once it is well seasoned, allowing for a bit extra glide with reliable fade, which is perfect for shaping lines with. The flat top is for power flex and power hyzer shots when you need something that will fade no matter what the conditions are.

The OG fairway driver with a strong hyzer finish.

Reliability is key, and the Firebird delivers just that. At 9 speed, it's controllable, and reasonable for a tee shot, or thrown from the fairway. It's numbers are 'true' with this thing fighting into a hyzer finish as it slows down before a strong hyzer finish. Some Firebirds are a little more flat on top, with those dumping out hard left (RHBH), with some a little more domey, dumping out just a little bit less. Those flatter Firebirds are great for forehands, and the domey ones are awesome for backhands. Personally bag one of each, although I throw backhand 95% of the time. Stability is strong enough to work for flex lines. Champion plastic is a great plastic for the Firebird, as it keeps the stability up, and the beat-in slow. If you're after a consistent meathook driver, and want to lean on the same disc for round after round, even after smashing trees, than the Firebird in Champion plastic is the right call.

The Star Firebird is an awesome overstable driver for Intermediate players. I'm still a beginner myself, but I've been playing a lot over my first four months and I wouldn't recommend for beginners that still don't have the form to throw it correctly. It's certainly a meathook and great for spike hyzers and flex shots. I've loved my Firebird and found that Champion plastic just feels a bit less overstable for me. Awesome disc to have in the bag!

It flies exactly how it's rated. I have a lower arm speed so I use it mostly as a forehand rescue disc or in heavy headwinds. I have no worries of turning this disc over and I know no matter how much anhyzer I put on it it's going to fade back for me.

I tried a lot of utility disc options between the predator, machete, and raptor - none flew as well for me forehand as the Firebird. I tend to opt for the glow champs or Sexton's. They seem less OS, and more workable as a forehand approach disc. I should mention it's very forgiving forehand, if you're having wobble issues this will help build your confidence. It will cover up form flaws but still allow you to start seeing some controlled distance with the FH.

One of the most reliable discs ever made. If you like Innova discs and plan on playing disc golf for more than the next two weeks, buy a Firebird. I carry a 169g Champion and it gets used for backhand dogleg hyzers under 300 ft, and just about every "get out of trouble" shot you can imagine (thumber, tomahawk, "can I power this through those leaves/branches?"-shots, grenade, big skips). Because of the the overstability and low glide, you will know exactly what to expect from the firebird every time you throw it, no matter the conditions.

Also, if, like me, you need a disc that will compensate for the inadequacies in your forehand technique, buy a firebird. I am the kind of player who doesn't throw a forehand unless I have no other choice. I never work on my form and so never feel confident doing it. The only exception is forehand shots when I know I can use the firebird.

I did not like the Firebird when I first added it to my bag but now it is a go to disc for me for its overstability. I struggled throwing it but once I got my power dialed in, this disc did wonders for me. My Firebird has gotten a bit beat up so I can get it to hold straight for a bit before the hard fade. It has been very reliable for me on the 300 to 350 ft holes!

This is my favorite disc in my bag. I use it primarily for RHFH drives and approaches. This disc can be used for flex shots, FH rollers, thumbers, tomahawks, skip shots, and BH spike shots. This is a disc that I would immediately buy if I lost because of how much versatility it adds to your bag. This disc taught me about how to think about the landing spot for where I want my disc to finish, especially for FH shots, because of how overstable it is. This is also great because of how predictable it is. Great for headwinds. I recommend this disc to every new person that I play with.

Very Overstable which is what you're looking for in a Firebird. Very good for flex forehands for beginner players and early fading backhand throws (RHBH) for left turning holes.

Forehand flex king that battles the wind and skips like a beast. For a 9 speed this baby crushes the distance and spike hyzers like a javelin with minimal relative effort. A true staple in the bag.

The Innova Firebird should be the first really overstable hybrid driver that up-and-coming disc golfers get. I got one in Champion plastic, and after I chucked it into the water, I had to get another one immediately. Both were as flat as a board and comfortable in the hand. I can trust this disc in any headwind to fly with solid, predictable fade at the end of the flight. The Firebird is also great for absolutely ripping on a big hyzer backhand line. I also love flexing it down the fairway for distance or if I need to weave through some trees. I also love ripping on it for forehand flat shots where I need a dive to the right or a flex line. I have also used it for approaches where I need some skip. This is just an all around great disc and one that most should have in their bag.

The gold standard for overstable fairway drivers. A must have for forehand flex shots. Champion plastic definitely makes a difference. Would not recommend for someone with a noodle arm forehand, it can be a meat hook if you don't have some forehand snap.

I knew before I even bought this disc when I spotted it on the shelf at Kwik Way that I would be using this damn disc everytime I played a round (I did my research)!! It is my favorite disc because of the thumbers I can launch with this thing you guys. I have aced a 250ft par 3 with this disc and somehow (because of how beat in it is) I can now crack a 300ft thumber with it at will!!! I literally have never even tried to throw this thing backhand or forehand but I have seen it utilized as a great overstable forehand disc because it will always do what you want it to! This is my #1 got to for anything thumber/tomahawk related and it has never failed me. It takes alot of power to get my firebird to flip with a tomahawk throw and that's why I dont reccomend it for beginners but as soon as you start getting some power GET THIS F#%$^# DISC NOW and start launching thumbers you will not regret it!!! EDIT started throwing Destroyers overhand and it smokes my firebird as far as distance is concerned(350ft.) Still more consistent with the FB though and it'll always be my most favoritest disc lol

This is one of my favorite fairway drivers. I currently bag 2: a 167g Flat and Firm (FAF) Champ and a 175g FAF Champ. I also have a 2019 Sexton Firebird but that has recently been filtered out of the bag. The reason I love this run of FAF Firebird is because of how overstable and versatile they are. I am able to trust these on any overstable line, wind or no wind. My 167g Firebird is quite beat so it is my main forehand disc, I am able to push it out straight before a gradual fade at the end. Backhand it flies more like a very overstable teebird. My 175g Firebird compliments my 167g perfectly, it is an absolute MEAT HOOK. All this thing does is dump no matter how I throw it which is very useful for hard turns in a fairway or soft hyzer shots. I think that everybody should have a Firebird in their bag for any type of overstable shots. This should not be your main driver. If a regular firebird is too overstable for you then I recommend a Glow/Sexton Firebird.

Wow, what a great disc. Innova really scored with a predictable, comfortable, wind-resistant, overstable disc. The firebird feels great in the hand, backhand or forehand. It flies insanely well, nothing beats the firebird in the utility disc slot. I also got an ace with it, into ripping headwind. The firebird is hands down the best overstable headwind fairway driver on the market. Due to it's overstability, it wouldn't be a great disc for beginners using it as a main distance driver, it's more of an accuracy disc than a distance driver.

When I first started throwing this disc, I could not for the life of me understand why it was so well-liked. I do now! Let me start off by saying that this disc is beginner friendly if and only if, you want a disc that immediately goes left out of your hand (RHBH). I do not personally think that this disc is beginner friendly (speaking from personal experience). What I like about this disc is the consistency! I always know what this disc is going to do now that I have thrown it several times. My favorite use for my champion Firebird is a forehand flex shot, but I love it for other forehand shots as well. I throw it with a lot of anhyzer (RHFH) and she will flex to the left and come back hard right. If I only throw with a little anhyzer, she will fly straight and then dive hard right, flat I will get a touch of straight flight before the hard finish, and any kind of hyzer and she will make it a sharp one! Great for sky hyzer shots and even after I have beat this disc in, it still flies true!

I completely disagree that this disc isn't beginner friendly.  If the beginner is trying to actually learn how to play rather than just find the easiest disc to throw starting out this is a great disc.  I am only kind of mediocre and I use mine all the time for all kinds of utility shots, flick rollers, skip approaches, which in florida on flat ground I use all the time.  I've used one since I first started for tomahawks which are basically the first utility shot I ever had because I was so terrible with real throws I was always deep in the woods.

It's a great forehand disc to start with as well imo because the fade is so dependable.

Disc - 175 Innova 2019 Tour Fundraiser Champion Color Glow Sexton Firebird

Feel - The firebird fits very nicely in the hand as is has a fairly narrow rim. Many firebirds are fairly flat, but ideally the flat ones are usually the best/most overstable/most comfortable for a forehand grip. I've only felt a few sexton firebirds other than this one and they've seemed to be fairly flat. It feels good for both backhand and forehand shots and the color glow champion plastic is super durable and is pretty grippy compared to other extremely durable plastics and is probably my favorite plastic that innova makes.

Flight - The Sexton firebirds are a bit less stable than a regular flat 12x champion run but they are a bit more glidey. You can definitely still trust this disc into a headwind but it will still get you a good amount of distance before fading out. Because I have a weak forehand, I don't throw this forehand unless I'm in a very tricky situation where I need a flick roller or a tomahawk or something like that to get out of trouble. But I love this disc for backhand dogleg shots as it seems to always skip more than any other disc in my bag.

Overall - I would recommend the firebird or FD3 or Felon or whichever brand that you like. These discs all fill the same overstable fairway slot and do it very well. If you already have that extremely overstable fairway and are looking for a reliably overstable fairway that gets you a bit more distance I would try out a sexton firebird for sure.

The Firebird was the first disc that I used playing disc golf and I absolutely fell in love with it, although I started as a less conventional player. As a former baseball player, my friend who introduced me to disc golf suggested that I try thumbers and Tomahawks, and then proceeded to hand me a Firebird. I had immediate success using those shots and this disc has always held at least one spot in my bag (I have 4 now). This has always been my absolute favorite disc for this reason. As I evolved as a disc golfer I began using this disc with a backhand and forehand shot as well, and this disc has remained consistent and reliable for me throughout my years of playing. I now use this disc in most situations with confidence as long as the situation calls for it, and I never shy away from a thumber or tomahawk shot because of it. For those looking for an overhand option, look no further because this is THE disc. For those looking for a reliable disc, this is also a great disc to use. All in all, this will always have a spot in my bag and will probably always be my favorite/go-to disc.

An absolute meathook. Bagged only for bombing tomahawks and shots where I need to fade left immediately. It is probably the most consistent disc in my bad when it comes to replicating shot shape. I can trust it to always do what I want it to which is why it stays in the bag. Not great for beginners, I wouldn't rush in to buy a Firebird, but I think its a good disc for everyone to try at one point as it is a very good OS Driver for approach, finesse, and into the wind shots.

I bag a firebird for those sticky situations that no other disc in the market can get me out of. I have other molds that are my go to forehands, so I don't throw mine very much, but I always make sure to have it in the bag. Ridiculous headwinds, zagging flex shots, and huge skip shots are those special moments I get to take out the firebird and watch it's magic.

This disc is my go to forehand disc. I have 2 in Luster plastic max weight. I can flex shot this thing forehand that flies for days. I can rip on it turned over forehand and it wont dump it just flexs and flies. I dunno if it is the plastic that helps me get more distance or what but it moves fast with a very hard overstable fade at the end. I tried the Luster just to give it a shot the sexton wasnt available at the time and I ended up loving it and bought a 2nd. I grabbed a color glow sexton when it was available, but I personally don't bag it I cant get the distance or flight out of it like I do the Luster. I recommend trying it in a couple different plastics to see how it flies for you or try some friends out. If you are still working on your forehand I would hold off on this one until you can shape a forehand well and feel comfortable, but all in all its an awesome disc try it out!

If I had to guess this is probably in the top 3 of most bagged Innova molds and it has been and will be a big favorite for a long time. The firebird in my opinion set the precedent on what an overstable approach driver should look like. People like Nate Sexton have made their livings off of this disc. It has such a reliable fade no what what position you are in and what the wind is doing to you. You could drive with this disc into massive headwind and I can almost bet you it will fade out hard. So when you purchase this disc for that reason it will not disappoint. I think people need to make sure they understand what they are getting with this disc if they are newer because it will take getting used to to throw this disc well. But when you figure out how you can throw this disc, it was almost certainly not leave your bag, you can trust it on spike hyzer shots or any wind shot and know it will go where you want it to go. The overstable firebird is a must have disc for any player looking to take the game serious and play well.

When I first got this disc, I was throwing mostly backhand and thought it would be good for big hyzer shots. In the champion plastic, my disc has very little glide and I had little success getting the flight path I expected on the backhand.

Things turned around when when I started throwing the Firebird forehand only. The disk starts dead straight and takes a reliable hard turn every single time. If I mess up my angle the disc is very forgiving. It is the most consistent disc that I have ever thrown. Except for high shots, this disc will finish with a skip every time. When it is thrown high, it will spike down and stay right where it lands.

This is not a disc that I reach for on every drive but when the situation calls for it, I'm thrilled to use it because I know exactly what it is going to do.

Not much to say that hasn't already been said.  Reliable overstability that really shines in the wind or for big arms in general.  I throw this for forehands (pretty much any way, hyzers, flat shots, flexes, you name it) and spike hyzers for over the top tree shots.  This disc does rely on a strong arm to get the job done so it definitely takes some working up to properly throw.  Highly recommend for any experienced play looking for a reliable and overstable disc.

For forehands hyzer shots it is hard to beet the Firebird, it will always fade out and spike or skip depending how you throw it. It's crazy vesatile too, I use it for getting out of trouble by tomahawkig it, grenade, crazy s-line shots. This one disc has shaved so many strokes for me. It has opened up so many lines I had previosuly never even bothered looking for. I play many wooded courses and having this disc allows me to throw big hyzers over the trouble, making so many drives much easier. What can be said about this. IT's the epitome of overstable drivers. It feels great, has reliable flight in any wind and is very utility friendly. Good for forehand spike rollers, forehands, overhands. backhands, skip shots, lower ceilings, and flex shots. Dome can have an effect on how a particular disc flies. Flat tend to be very overstable whereas more domey are a bit more workable but still overstable.

Forehands for days! This disc is a workhorse that fights the wind and reliably fades. There are 6 holes at my local course whose fairways move left to right, and I forehand a Champ Firebird on at least half of them, and the only reason it's not more is because the last two are only around 250 to the pin [cue DD Justice]. If you want to work on your forehand form, grab some neutral putters, but if you want a lot of forgiveness and reliable results, the Champ Firebird is money in the bank!

I’m still learning the great game of disc golf so I don’t really use this for what it’s designed for. I only pull this out of the bag as a utility disc to get out of hairy situations where I need a big hyzer or something (got stuck behind a tree tonight and threw a big hyzer from about 130’ and parked it). So far, I love it for throws like that but until I get a bigger arm, it’ll stay in the bag for the most part. This disc is only “beginner friendly” for short spike-hyzers but other than that, no, beginners won’t get more than 120’ out of this thing most likely.

The Firebird is one of the most dependable fairway drivers I have ever owned. Very comparable (in my opinion) to the Discraft Raptor. It has a reliable flight even in wind and a strong overstable finish. Comfortable to use for forehand, backhand or overhand shots. It isn’t what I would recommend to most beginners, but it is a great disc to use learning how to shape shots with an overstable disc. I have always preferred this disc in champion plastic, but also carry a star plastic Firebird in my Innova bag for shots that I want to limit the skip on (or water holes because I love my champion too much to risk it). I highly recommend for every player to at least test out a Firebird. Most will end up with it in their bag forever.

Great disc for over-stable shots. Not nearly as beefy as a monster. I use it for forehands, backhands, and overhands. Consistent mold that each I have thrown are identical. Great disc. I don't use it on every throw but I really could. It goes far enough with a dependable fade. I keep two in the bag in champion in two colors for variability of terrain. I don't bag fairway drivers at all but I keep this and a thunderbird handy for those types of shots. Reminds me of the banshee from when I was a kid.

The Firebird is a classic mold that actually has a ton of overstability. The new 12x Champion runs will dump very quickly while the Sexton or 11x Firebirds will go a little straighter and be a little more workable. It feels great in the hand for both backhands and forehand. It also loves to skip on almost any surface. A lot of imitators have come in recent years, but I don't think any of them have surpassed the original brilliance of the Firebird.

The firebird that I have is what I believe to be the latest run of champion firebirds. It is flat as a board on top, 175g and has a bit of a pearlescent sheen to it. I haven't thrown any other firebirds before so I can't speak about it in comparison, but I will say that this is hands down and by far the most overstable disc I have ever thrown. It's great for spike hyzers and shots that need start hyzering out after 100 feet. It is purely a utility/situational disc for me because I can't throw it past 250 feet before it hits the ground, and it always gets massive flare skips. Overall a great disc to have in the bag for fun, and when you're in trouble.

    Disc: 175g Champion Firebird (green)

The original disc to fade like crazy. Perfect utility disc and "never turn over" disc.

Flight: The Firebird fades hard with no turn. RHBH it will go left and not think twice about it. It's not a total brick though, as it can get some decent distance. It more of a majestic hook.

Use: What can't you do with a Firebird? (throw it straight, oh ya) But everything else this is a great utility disc. Awesome forehand disc (as it hides bad form). Big hyzer back hand shots. Thumbers and tomohawks. The overstability makes this a great disc with lots of uses

Summary: I definitely recommend getting your hands on a Firebird and trying it out. It makes the game easier with a disc that can be so dependable. Consistent distance and flight makes it fun to use.

The best thing I ever did was grab a 165g champ firebird. For me, the firebird feels great in my hand and on release, but it's beefy. So I grab a 165g and now I'm ripping it straight with late LS fade. Then I'm cranking it overhand (tomahawk) with deadly accuracy. It starts to beat in and now flies like a perfect fairway driver. So now I have 3 165 to 167 champ firebirds and stopped carrying any other stable fairway. Get a lightweight champ firebird and you'll fall in love.

The absolute best overstable driver.  I have one that has just a touch of dome and is in a slightly gummier Champion plastic.  This one allows me to throw the Firebird a little farther than others might.  I also have one that is board flat and is very stiff.  These are known as FAF (Flat and Firm) Firebirds.  If you want a Firebird that you can use for all sorts of shots, get one that isn't super flat and stiff.  If you want an absolute beefcake, find one as flat and firm as you can.

It's no secret why the Firebird is such a popular fairway driver from Innova. It has a perfectly sized rim making it comfortable in most hands, big or small. It also has an immense amount of overstability. I bag the Firebird for spike hyzer backhand drives and flex forehands. I can rely on the Firebird to fight the wind and always have a large amount of fade. For my forehand I can get the Firebird out to +300 feet with a reliable skip. Even in a lighter weight the Firebird holds up to wind and power. I wouldn't recommend it to a beginner unless they are going to throw overhands or power side arms. That being said whether you are a beginner or a veteran the Firebird is always going to be an overstable disc regardless of power.

It has a very blunt rim, medium flat top, and medium depth. The original overstable 9-speed driver, everyone needs a firebird!

I absolutely love this disc. It was the first overstable disc that I bought to develop my forehand flick. I carry two of them in the bag that are identical in case I lose one to the many water hazards at my home course. I have been able to utilize it for skip shots. I don't throw the Firebird with a backhand very often but when I do, I can ALWAYS trust it to come back with fade. For the RHFH throws this disc is money. I would say that it is my go to on the course for any hole 300 feet or less that requires a right-hand turn at the end.

I used a max weight campion Firebird for a few months and it became my most trusted disc within 300 feet. No matter how much wind there is the firebird takes it like a champ and will always fade hard at the end. This disc is great for anyone that can throw 250 feet and doesn't have a VERY overstable disc in their bag. I threw mine in a river and have needed it many times since.

I was lucky enough to find an 11x KC Champion Firebird a few years ago, and its straight flight and huge fade at the end feels as natural to me as breathing.  I have been using this ever since I found it as a longer mid-range/approach disc, from the time I was a beginner to being good enough now to consider myself an intermediate player.  Through it all, this disc has remained consistent and I know how it will behave in any condition.

I've really come to love the Firebird. I first got it for forehand plays but have since started using it as an overstable workhorse. From approaches to drives, if you need a good hyzer or overstable play, this is the disc to reach for. Throw it as hard as you can and it won't turnover at all. It'll hold your line and hyzer out. To be honest, I hadn't planned on using it more than for forehand plays, but its utility quickly proved itself and I often find myself reaching for this disc.

It's a great disc to learn forehand with. The overstable nature of the disc really helps cut down on the wobble (off-axis torque) that is common in beginners. Practice with it enough and you'll get rid of that altogether.

For a beginner, I'd say get it if you want to learn to flick. For anyone above that, I can't see how you couldn't use a disc like ths.

If there is one disc that can be trusted to fade hard, even in the wind, it is the iconic Firebird from Innova! Maybe not the best disc for beginners due to its overstable nature. For more experienced players with more arm speed an overstable driver is essential. This is my go-to overstable driver in my bag, because I know I can trust it.

WOW WOW WOW WOW is all I can say about this disc!!!

It feels amazing in the hand and has a very comfortable rim for being so overstable. Normally those types of discs feel to sharp for my taste. I have 6 of these in my bag, 2 star, 2 champ and 2 sexy birds. I can use this disc literally for any shot including harsh weather conditions! The sexy birds are beat in and handle straight to turn over RHFH and RHBH drives while my champs handle hyzer RHBH/RHFH shots. The star plastic has held it's stability even after beating the crap out of them with thumbers, tomahawks and FH rollers. That said it may not be a very good beginner disc but I would still recommend for those big corner shots you need to get around. Everyone should have one of these in their bag!

Note I averaged what I thought the ratings should be between the 3 types of plastic I throw.

I only bag the 175g 12x champion firebirds.  I try to find them with no heartbeat/dome.  I want it to be OS as can be.  Never had an 11x one but everyone says that's basically what I'm looking for.

I only forehand this disc like tees 250' or less.  I've gotten an ace with it.  I switched to the Lat64 Spark aka Spank for a while, got two aces with that mold, then went back to the firebird.  The reason is when the Spark beats in it'll flip out of its anny when I forehand, and i need it not to which is why I only bag 175g firebirds.  A 172g firebird has even flipped out of it's anny.  So I got rid of those. I did happen to find a 177g Spark so we'll see. For now I'm sticking with the firebird. I have almost aced so many holes with this disc, it's a perfect forehand anny disc.  No wonder all the pros bag it.  Try to find one with no pop in the dome and you'll love this disc.  If there's a slight pop it'll be ok, anything more or less than 175g has left my bag due to not holding the tight anny I use it for.  Now I will say it could have been my release, but I know for sure that 175g no dome is the way to go.

This disc is what actually made me start to feel more comfortable throwing forehands.  I have since improved my forehand throws and now I'm getting some nice longer, straight flights before ending in a very reliable and predictable fade.  I have one in Champion, Star, and Gstar.  My Champion Firebird is broken in and somewhat battered in appearance, but it flies straight and true, with a little fade at the end (just like I like it).  My Star and GStar Firebirds are still a little beefy in their fades, but they are excellent utility discs, and can be used to get around objects and for tomahawks and such.  Overall, this disc is my favorite mold from Innova!

It isn't as stable as most other firebirds but if you are looking for a forehand fairway driver then this is what you are looking for. I also carry a star firebird that I use for distance fade shots. It will go straight for a good distance then has a nice fade with glide. My last firebird is a flat top champ firebird. As a forehand dominant player this is a must have. It is reliable in the wind and has a very strong fade. I can always count on a consistent flight out of this disc regardless of the conditions. Highly recommend trying out the different firebirds.

For new golfers, the firebird will probably only be a utility spike hyzer disc. However, as you get a faster arm speed this thing becomes a "go to" disc with a consistent fade left even into headwinds (RHBH) Just recently picked up an old eleven time with some life left on it, flies so predictable almost aced with it first day in the bag.

The Firebird does one thing and one thing only. Hyzer. I got a 167g 12x champion Firebird as a gift and it changed my game. Reliably Overstable Fairway Driver is an understatement. This is a great disc for hyzer spikes, skip shots, and forehand long distance forehand rollers. I use the Firebird for any shot that requires a hyzer or even short safety shots when there is OB behind the basket. Horrible disc for beginners as it is too overstable and will only discourage new players. But for the experienced player looking for a great hyzer disc pick up a Firebird.

For me, the 12x Pearly Champion FAF (Flat and Firm) Firebird serves as a utility disc. I use it for skip shots, both FH and BH. It also finds use with hard left to right forehand shots and get out of trouble type shots. The Firebird is a disc that does not have much glide, and is insanely overstable. It is definitely not made for beginners and should only be explored once you've developed some arm speed.

I am not an overhand-type throw of player, but I know plenty of players that use the Firebird for all of their tomahawk (aka hammer) and thumber needs. So if you're somebody who uses these types of shots, the Firebird should work out very well for you!

The more domey the Firebird, the more glide and less fade it will have. Which is why people covet the super flat ones.. Myself included!

This is my go to forehand disc it always goes right when flicked flat but also works amazing for tunnel flex shots. I believe this is a disc every player needs to have in there bag who plays on windy days. For beginners its tough because its not a good disc to learn to side arm or back hand with becuase of the overstability it has. Advanced players need to have this in there bag no doubt about it.

Firebirds are the utility discs of my bag.  A lot of the courses I play are tight and wooded.  Firebirds give me the ability to play aggressive how powered, low, line drive shots with a consistent skip.  This often means the difference between having a tap in put vs a tester at the edge of the circle.  On open holes, courses, this disc excels in the wind, and can be thrown on very controlled hyzer lines.   I also will throw this disc for flex forehand shots where i can rely on this disc to fade back.  A lot of people like thowing these discs overhand, but for whatever reason they dont fill that spot quite like my xxx's do.  The 12x champion firebirds are far more overstable and less glidey than the sexton glow firebirds.

The Firebird is a stalwart overstable driver that continues to survive the test of time with consistency and reliability. Mine is a 159g in an old school FAF Champion plastic (flat and firm) that gives it extra fade and stability. It's a pretty sweet combo, the light weight and the firmness, because can get great speed with 0% chance of flipping over. Seriously. I throw forehands and frequently throw the Firebird on a heavy anhyzer angle and watch it flex out in the same way time after time. It's the most consistent disc I've ever owned, which translated means I can actually throw it farther than high speed discs because I know I can juice it all the way up without fear. If you've never tried a Firebird, at least give it a shot and see if you agree. Pros and ams love it for a reason.

Firebirds are, in my opinion, the go-to disc for thumbers. I pack four in my bag with different degrees of wear so I can know exactly how each of my birds will fly when thumbed. If thrown as a thumber, these discs can fly predictably out to the left with a large, sweeping motion back to the right (RH thumber). This is also my go-to forehand disc because of its overstability. The firebird is a great utility disc and should be in everyone's bag!

I have two Firebirds, a well loved Champ and a cold weather Star, both about 170 grams. They're great discs, fairly predictable and comically overstable for a disc of single digit speed. I like them for forehands and tomahawks as they'll always fade. The glide is low by design, which helps ensure the disc doesn't get away when it's getting some snap on it. They work for backhands toO if a big fade is desired.

With the low glide the disc can crash pretty early if it's not thrown with some initial loft. I blame that on operator error more than everything, but the Firebird isn't very forgiving for bad elevations or not getting enough snap. But it's a very nice weapon to have with it's monster fade. A disc that doesn't apologize for what it is, meat Hook!

I picked out one that had a flat top (by chance), which I was told was desirable at the time, but didn't know what it meant or how it would effect the flight.

I threw the disc a few times and it found its way into my closet with my extra discs. Only after developing my forehand game, and gaining more experience as a disc golfer overall, did I put the Firebird back in my bag, permanently. This disc is absolutely fantastic, but not beginner friendly at all (unless maybe you are primarily a forehander and are turning everything over).

My flat-topped Firebird is insanely stable and has a reliable hard fade/crash at the end of every flight. I could release it completely anhyzered and it would be fading after 100 feet. I just threw it alongside some Trilogy XXXs and they all flew similar distances, and faded a similar amount. My Justice, Felon, Spark, Trident, and overstable VIP Harp all go farther than this disc, and fade less (to give you an idea of how stable a stiff champion flat-topped Firebird is, even when compared to all these beefy discs).

I would not play a round without a flat Firebird, or XXX in my bag. It is great for shaping difficult lines and getting me out of trouble. I have adjusted the ratings for my flat Firebird.

The Firebird is a classic staple that developing to professional disc golfers should have in their bag, or something like it. Its consistency and dependability have kept them in the bags of professional champions for years. The Firebird ia an overstable fairway driver that flies straight out of the hand and carries a big sweeping fade. If you need to go around a sharp corner, throw a spiking hyzer shot, or a low skip shot the Firebird can cover it all. The high speed and low glide make it easy to control, and the comfortable rim fits well in the hand. Lighter weights are a little easier to throw. But with a speed of 9 you don't need a huge arm to get it to perform, like you would a 12+ speed driver.

Most importantly is the shape of the disc or flight plate. Flatter Firebirds tend to be very overstable, while a more dome-shaped Firebird flies further before fading. A firm Champion plastic Firebird keeps its overstability for a long time, which is perfect since a disc like this should always be in your bag.

I carry 3 champ firebirds in my bag at all times and they each fly different enough that I can still justify it. I have a 11x flat as a board champ firebird that hooks really hard right out of my hand and takes big skips off the ground to continue hooking. I have a 12x a little domier max weight (175) firebird that will stay in the air longer than my 11x one and go a little straighter at the beginning but then fade hard and skip moderately. Then I have another 12x domier one, but this one at 167 and I call it my "Not Firebird" because I can actually get it to turn over ever so slightly and carry up to 250 relatively straight before it fades out. I really like this one because it can carry close to the length of my thunderbird and then fade very reliably. So that is all to say that the weight and the shape (how flat or domed the disc is) have a noticeable impact on how the disc flies and you can get multiple flight paths from the same feel of a disc even though they are ever so slightly different. It helps you get a consistent grip and release on a disc when you only have one mold that can do so many different things. I rate it at an 8 speed because I really don't think it is as fast as the Thunderbird or Volt which are both more true 9 speed discs. All in all this is a must in every competitive player's bag as it is the original and still the best over-overstable disc. There are many immitators (I actually kinda like the MVP Resistor for a flat firebird-imposter), but there really is only 1 firebird.

By far my favorite disc in my bag it's so dependable for shots that I need to be over stable whether that be backhand or forehand. No matter how you throw it will always be over stable

There are 2 types of Champion Firebirds. There are regular (domey) ones, and there are flat ones. The flat top ones are the more popular, more sought after ones. These are potentially one of the most overstable discs there are. I use one for short forehand shots, and is one of my go-to fairway drivers. I also use a flat one for utility shots such as skip shots, forehand and thumber rollers, and short thumbers.

The regular Firebird is a great one as well. They fly fairly straight but still have a very hard fade at the end. More powerful players are going to get more turn out of these Firebirds initially. I occasionally bag a non-flat Firebird for forehand shots. They are great as a fairway driver for my forehands, because I can get decent distance out of them but they won't go as far as my faster forehand discs.

I just got this disc recently and it won't be leaving my bag anytime soon.  I don't have enough arm to throw it as a normal driver, but it works so well on those straight to left lines for me.  It has a nice skip at the end, so be sure to play for that.

The Champion Firebird took me quite a while to warm up to. Since 1998 I had this in the bag, but rarely used it because it was so overstable and my arm speed really couldn't handle it. Years later upon learning how to throw properly as well as learning what wind does to certain disc molds the Firebird became my savior. This disc is one of those discs I'd have trouble playing without.

I got this disc for windy days and those shots that absolutely have to fade hard and skip. Works very well in that capacity.

The Firebird is one of the most predictable discs in my bag. When I need a disc that will absolutely fade every time, I grab the Firebird. It's not the fastest bird in the bag or the longest, but it is certainly the most predictable. I can trust this disc into a howling headwind and know that it will not turn over. If you don't have a Firebird or a disc like it in your bag, you're missing out! Forehand, Backhand, Overhand... It will do everything. Review is for 175g Champ.

Picked up a 12x champ in the 175 weight and it is great! The flat top Firebird is very over stable and I like it a lot. Have gotten it up up 400 with an s turn forehand. Good tomahawk disc as well(almost every disc I carry has to be able to tomahawk). Get one, throw it forehand, you will like it a lot.

I just picked up a 175g champion and can't throw it for poo. I'm pretty new to the sport but I throw my Valkyrie (same speed) 350 to 400 all day an every time I let this thing rip it immediately started to fade. I threw it a number of times with plenty of anhyzer and still the same result. I'm sure it's operator error but this disc is not what I expected.

The Firebird is one of my favorites. Everyone should have an overstable disc like this in their bag. I've tried out a few other meat hook fairway drivers, but I always come back to this one. This mold is overstable and very predictable, even in windy conditions. For overstability with years of longevity I would recommend a heavy Firebird in Champion plastic. It's like a building a deli out of ribeye steaks ; it's beefy.

Let me update this review: I just got one in champion KC 12, and it is a great overstable distance driver. It is working towards replacing my orc, and gives me the most consistant lines i've seen in any disc for my forehand.

You are from a different planet if you don`t use this for overhead shots. This thing turns so slow you have to start it off at least 60ft. in the air to get the maximum distance. I really like the champion flattop version. Also works as a consistent fairway driver.

Very predictable disc. even if your angle isn't exactly right on release, this disc will correct for you. all around a very good disc.

I love the Firebird for my forehand throws. It's not the farthest flying driver, but it is consistent. I can get more distance with other discs, but unless I throw them just right they go way off the course. With the Firebird, even when I accidentally throw it with too much anhyzer angle, it recovers and goes where I want it to go.
