The Swirly Star- FD3 aka "Doombird" is an absolute cruise missile. The FD3's profile is relatively flat with a gradual slope to the rim culminating is a quick angle change just at the wings edge. The feel in the hand is good, Speed 9 (2cm ish) discs always feel excellent hitting that sweet spot feel for most players. The grip is advantageous to backhand and forehand alike getting this disc off to a good start. To say I was a bit surprised by this disc is an understatement. My Doombird was much less swirly, but had that very stiff swirled star feel and it is weighed at 175g and has a pretty flat top.
The FD3 falls into the class of overstable fairway driver and comes with the misnomer of being a utility disc but that couldn't be further from the case. This disc handles power extremely well and you can crank on this thing hard and it just goes and does exactly what you are expecting it to. It flies really, really fast like deceptively faster than you think a disc with this rim class should. The stability is just right for an overstable fairway, no flip with a strong hook up at the end but not sacrificing distance very similar to that of thw DD Felon (but with much more glide). I like to test overstable fairways on a hole at my home course which is a 400ft downhill sloping shot with a big Mando (to the left of the) tree on the right side of the fairway about 300ft down the fairway but the rest of the field is wide open, the downhill grade will add a good degree of understability to the discs flight. This is a great trust test to see if something will flip or tell me if a disc is too overstable for my back hand if it breaks too early. The ideal line is to have the disc start to hook up just as it reaches the tree and have it skip and nestle up to the basket. On my first throw with this disc backhand the FD3 held the line dead straight (even with a slight left to right tail wind) and broke just where I expected it to and skipped its way just under the bucket. Forehand this disc is pretty beefy but those who like to throw with anhyzer (like my brother) will get this disc to hold that flex a little longer, on flat and hyzer releases the disc hooks up nicely and stays pretty dang straight.
The Doombird handles headwinds pretty well although its not insanely beefy though and surprisingly glide-y so I would not trust it into a ripping headwind. Crosswinds seem to be where this disc excels offering enough stability to shirk the conditions away and enough glide to hold the line. Tailwinds this disc is probably a little too beefy for flat ground but for downhill shots it will work pretty well.
Beginners might like the stamp... but probably best to steer clear for now.
Overall the Discmania Swirly Star FD3 "Doombird" is a force to be reckoned with in the overstable fairway class. To me it features all the things that I love about my DD Felons but goes a good bit further. It does what it advertises admirably and only gets better as it beats in. There really is only one major criticism that I have with this disc... and it's that it is a tour series disc in a limited production run in an obscure plastic type at a higher price tag which makes it relatively hard to replace and is something that should definitely be considered before picking one up to use as a primary thrower. I received mine as part of my Discmania mystery box or else I would probably not have grabbed one otherwise, but here I am.... looking for more of them because they are absolutely worth it. With all that considered: 4/5 stars is an appropriate rating with the only major knock being the discs rarity and difficulty to replace but if that does not sway you get out there and buy 3 or 4 of these bad boys because they will not disappoint.
