The Tern has a unique hand feel. The rim is super shallow and has a sharp wing. It feels very comfortable and I get a consistent relase each time with it. It feels way less bulky than other 12 speeds (Time lapse, Destroyer, Racer). In Star plastic it is very workable. It can hyzer flip with a good late fade. It can hold long sweeping hyzer lines, and when thrown flat it gets a night S curve. The best part is at my power (325-350) it hasn't burned over except when there was a solid 20mph headwind. I now bag a champion one as well which handles a headwind a bit better and also great for FH. This would be a perfect introduction to a high speed driver for anyone with 275 power or above.

I got a 137g for my slow arm speed since I'm usually fatigued due a health condition and it went further than any other of my light discs. Went almost twice as far as my Origin.

I love this disc! It was my first distance driver that I could get a good s turn out of. New it was somewhat difficult to get turn, but it was very straight. Now, somewhat beat in and my arm speed up this is my favorite disc to get right. I throw with a slight hyzer release as fast as I can, and it stands up, flips over, and rides super far to the right. I don't use it for much else these days because it's definitely too flippy these days, but for those shots it is amazing. Honestly, one of my favorite discs to throw. Occasionally I throw it on a big hyzer for max distance. It rarely dumps, which is why I like it so much. The daedalus will dump for me, so I prefer this by a lot. It has become a staple in my bag even though I don't throw it much. But when I need it, it is a very unique disc for me!

For a slower arm speed, this disc will be great! For reference, I throw about 400 consistently. A new tern would probably be a different story, but once it is beat in they are easy to stand up and get big distance.

This is the disc I recommend to people who can throw at least 350 ft RHBH with a midrange, and are looking to start reaching for those farther distances. This is fantastic driver and it pushed my RHBH over 400 ft. I had to practice a lot, but this disc can give you the distance you are looking for if you can be consistent with it. I see a lot of people who can't throw 300 ft using this disc and to each their own... That being said this disc was made to go far. So don't throw it if you know you shouldn't!

The Tern took some time to dial in, but boy it was worth it.  It has become my go to backhand distance driver for calm conditions, as well as downwind/downhill shots.  This disc absolutely bombs and has produced some of my biggest drives.  It can be tossed around in headwinds and crosswinds so I don't use it on windy days.  My Star Tern is gonna stay in the bag for a long time.

The Tern is such an amazing under stable flying distance driver. It is perfect when thrown flat and wide for long straight downhill shots but it is just as good for super long, wide an-hisser shots. I feel that this disc excels when ever it is thrown downhill more often than up hill shots but then again lets not forget that this is an under stable disc. Meaning that you can get a very nice hisser flip and especially for those up shots but it will be more power demanding whenever it is thrown up hill. Compared to when thrown downhill, I've found that you only need about 70 percent of this discs power to make the disc do what you want it to do but also the slightest bit of an-hisser will be needed to stabilize the disc since it won't be thrown with the adequate power. This way you will be way less likely to overshoot it but disclaimer, the Tern will still get at least 300 feet down hill even thrown with that 70 percent power just because of the nature of the disc and how it literally "turns" just like the name of it.

My go to max distance bandhand driver. High speed, but understable enough where I can get it to ride straight for a good amount of time, or get some nice max distance flex out of it, if there is enough space. Definitely recommend this disc.

I have mixed feelings on this disc, 169g Star Plastic.  On one hand, this is possibly the farthest flying disc I have ever thrown.  On the other hand, if you are at all concerned about where your drive is going to land, this probably isn't the best option.  On a big throw RHBH with some air underneath it this disc will go and go and go and go to the right, forever.  But if you acidentally throw it a little bit nose up it will finish left, so there is a huge potential difference in where this thing will go even with consisent arm speed.  Super fun to throw in big open fields.  Comfortable in the hand.  I don't know though that I have ever encountered a hole though where I thought this disc was the best option.  I prefer the Shryke for a very long distance more controlled shot that will have some play to the right.  However the Tern is undoubtedly fun, and maybe with some more practice I can become more consistent with it.

This disc just keeps on going. I am a right handed thrower, and I only use it for back hand drives. It is slightly under stable which makes it easy for me to throw a bomb that just ever so slightly keeps moving to the right with the slight left turn at the very end. It competes with my Champion Boss for being my farthest driver. If I play a long hole that requires an under stable shot, I go with the Tern, where as long holes that require an over stable shot, I will go with my Boss.

I have 3 Terns in Pro, Star and Champ an each flies very differently.  They are all in the 150-160g range.  The Pro is very flippy, can hyzer flip to flat to turn over. The Star after a little beating in flies very straight. the Champ is very overstable for me (I only throw about 300'). I really like the Tern, especially the Star Tern, it has become one of my go-to drivers. The flippy Pro Tern is great for a late turning shot, as long as it is throw with a lot of hyzer.  The wind can really push the Pro around.  The Star has a lot of glide for me.  I'm thinking the Champ will be more useful once it gets a little beat in.

At first I didn't know if I would like this disc considering a friend of mine whose opinion I trust did not like it, but once I tried it I really enjoyed it. It's a great and reliable disc for controlled distance and tight anhyzer shots. This is one of the first discs I will grab when I need to throw a tight gap shot with some turn on it (no pun intended ;)). The flight is somewhat stable (if not more on the understable side) but needs a pretty wide pan for it on it's full flight. I have this mold in Star plastic at 172 grams, and I think this is the perfect version of the disc for me. As for who should be throwing this disc, I believe it is best for the slightly more experienced arms considering it's a 12 speed that needs a tad different angle when thrown in order to get its full flight potential. If you have the ability to control an angle and need a disc to hit some gap shots, look no further.

When I first started playing disc golf, I got myself a Star Destroyer because Paul McBeth threw them and I though I could too.  I was wrong, so for a long while after that I threw mostly fairway drivers off the tee and it was good.  Still, there were a few holes at a course I play frequently that I really wanted to get more distance on.

One day, while playing this course, I found a Star Tern lost in a tree with no name & no phone number.  I threw it on one of the longer holes and it flew like I had expected my Destroyer to fly, getting me at least 50 extra feet beyond what I could reach with any fairway.  Into the bag it went, and it has never come out.  My backhand arm speed has improved a bunch, but the Tern still has its uses.  I never throw it in a headwind, but for still or tailwind shots where I have a roomy fairway it is my longest driver, reaching 400 at times.  I tried flicking it, but it's too easy to turn over with my mediocre form.  If you throw at least 300 feet with fairway drivers, you can use this disc.

First disc as an intermediate player that I threw and went, "woah that went far." Straight flyer, can be flexed fairly easily especially if you have the power. The disc doesn't have a huge rim which really feels good in my hand compared to some other big drivers. A ton of glide, fades very nicely without falling out of the sky at the end of its flight. My go to if I just need something to go far and stay straight.

When I first started out this was my  most used disc, and definitely the one that I could get the most distance with. For a beginner and even someone with average arm strength this thing will fly fair and straight with a very soft right finish. I now get a little bit of turn at the beginning but it is still one of my straightest flying drivers when released flat or at a bit of a hyzer.

For forehands, my arm speed is a little stronger than my backhand. My forehands and backhands can go about the same distance when thrown well, but I have a tendency to turn over forehand drives with understable discs. I rarely release this flat on a forehand unless I want it to go left with a soft finish. Thrown on a hyzer this disc will flip up to flat and fly straight and far.

I would definitely recommend this as a max distance driver for beginners and even intermediate players once you learn how to control release angles a little more

A comical amount of turn, and a disc I probably shouldn't bag. But it serves me well, since my forehand is very underdeveloped compared to my backhand I use it to hold anhyzer lines that never fade back over. Also great for tailwinds and monstrous hyzer flips. Would not reccomend for beginners like I was when i bought it. It hides a lot of form errors, and I'm just now starting to really understand its place in my bag.

This is one of my newer additions to my bag and so far so good, it flies just as advertised for me. I love this disc for a big s-curve or a nice gliding anhyzer depending what angle I throw it on. So far I have just tried it in star, but I am curious to try more plastics because I like the feel of the disc.

This was the first distance driver I could throw. It has enough turn to get a decent s-curve on the disc when started on a bit of an anny. This disc, in Star plastic, has lasted me over 5 years and is still a staple in my bag though I have about 20 discs at this point.

This disc surprised me. I found a brand new max weight star tern on the local course and didn't expect much of it when I threw it. But wow, this disc is a great flyer. Very straight with a touch of fade at the end. I throw with a lot of torque so I was surprised it was still very controllable with the speed I was putting it on. Now a staple in my bag.

This disc is a speed 12 but it is more forgiving than that I've found. I consider myself a noodle arm with good technique and I can get it up to speed most of the time. For people who can rip discs out to 450' you are going to have much better options out there than this. This improves that max distance spot for people who can only throw it to about 300-350'. It is far from consistent though when it comes to aiming at a landing spot and so I continue my search for a driver that can beat this.

This was my go-to driver in Star-Lite plastic at 137G for my noodle arm senior citizen throwing power - until I lost it. Came back here looking for a replacement only to find out Innova stopped producing Star-Lite discs, so the only choices now are regular Star plastic in a light weight somewhere hopefully in the mid 140's.  This disc is one of the few I could get a good S shape drive out of and reach over 300 ft. without turning too much, or into a roller. The medium sized rim is easily gripped for an extra energetic rip, and the speed is a favorable match for my arm speed.

This is my go to distance disc on flat open courses or downhill shots. I bag two, in different plastics at 168g. A Star and a Gstar. The Gstar for colder and wet conditions. I throw them backhand, low and flat and get a nice S curve when broken in. I don't throw them in windy conditions, but they do handle some wind due to the beefier rim. It was a fluke how I came across this disc, as I had never thrown one before. Won it at a clinic/doubles event that the Yeti was putting on. Ever since then, it has always been in my bag. This is a great disc for Beginners to Advanced wanting a good S curve disc.

Never done a disc review before, however this disc merits one.  Granted I have only played one round with it, but ended up using it on half of my drives. I had a 5-10 mph wind. Sometimes tail, sometimes cross, sometimes head. I'm primarily a flat thrower and the star wraith has been my bread and butter for years.  I got this disc in star plastic at 172 grams. The disc performed flawlessly for me. It added roughly 50 ft to my drives instantly.  I average 300-350. Didn't matter what direction the wind was coming from. Stays up for days...with the turn and fade combined, it drops right where you point. I believe this one is gonna be a game changer for me!

I'll add this as a response to Blackcat's review. Anytime a disc is all over the place, it is on the thower, not the disc. Work on your form sir!

Tern and Bolt are the 2 magic bullets I've found for average arms. Get them at normal throwing weights, 168-175. 150 class and understable doesn't work, way to flippy.

A 172 Tern will turn, then fade back, not burn out, if you have an average gun. That full flight will add 30' to your drives.

    1. First of all I rarely review discs.  I also don't pay much attention to other peoples reviews.  I don't really care if they love or hate a disc.  I have no idea how they throw.. how far, how much oat they have etc.  I had to do a review because Blackcat is some kind of troll.  The Tern is not both over stable and under stable.  It is also not difficult to throw.  For me.. I throw 350 feet.  That is a stock driver distance for me on a flat ground with no wind.  I occasionally can get it out to 400 feet.  I like to release on a hyzer with a smooth throw.  I have a Tern in star plastic at 167 grams, and it is a pretty flippy disc. I can't throw it into the wind or with a cross wind.  If I am throwing uphill though, this is the disc I throw.  I also have 2 Champion Terns at 171 and 172, and a max weight Star.  The max weight star handles a small amount of wind, and the champion terns at those weights are a tiny bit more stable.  If you throw 350 feet, and don't release your disc on an anhyzer this disc could work for you.  It does have amazing glide.  You will need something more stable to handle windy days.  If you are like me though you won't take my word for it.  Next time you play ask someone if you can throw theirs.  Never buy a disc with out throwing it several times.  Also, never buy a disc because someone says it's awesome.  What works for them may or may not work for you.

To read other reviews you may wonder how you ever played without this disc in your bag. Let me give you the real scoop!  This is the most unpredictable disc I have ever thrown.  I call it my “Oh #$%@!” disc.  Sometimes radically understable followed by radically overstable (but most often not).  Sometimes it’s radical understable without ever coming back, sometimes radical overstable right from the hand, sometimes it b-lines 100 feet dead straight into a tree and does none of these things.

If other people are on the course go ahead and yell “FOUR!” as you begin your x-step as this disc will find and try to decapitate them.  If not, feel free to say “Hey y’all watch this crazy stupid #$%@!” to your buddies well behind the line.  As soon as the Tern leaves your hand, you will need to call upon unpredictability principles of quantum string theory to guess at several possible outcomes.

I recommend this disc only if you are working on fine tuning your flick.  Tern is EXTREMELY sensitive to speed AND spin.

I can see why people think Terns are a perfect distance driver for people with slower arm speeds! It really doesn't take much to get a smooth s flight out of, gliding down the fairway riding the s for nice easy distance.

It can get a bit squirrly if you have a faster arm and try to rip it 100%, or if you aren't on point with your angle of release. It certainly isn't a disc that likes wind. A slight headwind and it won't pull out of its turn much at all.

Great tailwind driver, or hyzerflip disc for advanced players, and certainly a nice disc for people discing up for the first time. However like many of these "solid introductory drivers" a newer player might fall into the trap of "bro I have killer snap and turn over 12 speeds" if they have poor form.

Star 167g. I expected this disc to be understable and a hyzer flip disc. I think I got a fluke as mine flies more like a detroyer than anything else. This was not at all what I expected. It was also weird becasue my star tern had a -3, 2 number on it instead of the typical -4, 2. I've thrown a friends' terns and they were understable, long, and flippy. However, this one was stable to overstable. Honestly, I really think it was mismarked in production and a fluke. The disc itself did not fly bad, but 1 star because of the inconsistency and mismarked disc.

Profile: Thick rim (thicker than most 12's) but a thin depth.  I think the thinness of the disc makes up for the thicker rim.

Flight: Forget the numbers when looking at this one.  I heard someone describe it as a beat in Destroyer, I would agree as long as it's a really beat in Destroyer :)  I can throw this into the wind and it always fights through it.  It always has a fade at the end but never a severe fade.  Just super reliable.  I get good S turns out of this, it always turns and it always fades back.

Comparison: Not many discs can S turn like this one, a beat in Outlaw is close except the Tern has more fade than the beat in Outlaw.

Final thoughts: This is an inconsistent disc between runs.  You can find that one that is just money, but good luck trying to replace it, the new one you buy will fly much different.

Great distance driver.  I'm an intermediate player who is presently working on my distance and at the moment I can get the turn up to about 370' on my best throw.  Definitely one of my favorite distance drivers at the moment.  I own three in Star plastic (168g, 170g, and 175g).  For the most part all of these go staight with a slight turn and a slight fade.  I also have a gummy champion 162g and this disc is great for tunnel shots.  I can put it on a decent hyzer and flip it to flat with a slight turn with works great for narrow tunnel paths.  My Star Tern flies similar to the Prodigy D3 in 400G plastic with weights in the 158-163g range.  A D3 in the same weight as the Tern is going to fade more than the Tern (yet still yield very good distance).  For reference I can get 168+g Terns out as far as Blizzard Bosses and Destroyers in 138g-150g weights with similar flight paths.

I don't really love this one, but I do "like like" it. I've got a 175g Star Tern, and straigt away it was a bit more understable than the ratings would suggest. However, after breaking in, it's gone a bit more true to the numbers.

This is a great, far-flying disc. It will turn over most of the time; as I normally release with a bit of hyzer, it will typically still give a standard S flight pattern. Be careful into headwinds, as it will definitely go so understable that you can get into trouble.

I have finally had enough experience with the Tern in many Plastics to give an honest review.

I have 3 Terns all in different runs/plastics and will base the reviews on my discs and weights, hopefully enough to give a good look into it's flight. ((FYI my usual stats: avg distance drive 375-410 Max dist: 500 ft measured, RHBH primary thrower, Level release with slight hyzer tilt))

Star: 171g, PLH lowest: My given #'s 12/6/-4/1.5 -> This Tern was very high speed understable.  When given 80% on a nice form drive it flew amazing, straight, flip, ride Left->Right held good distance and small fade back. Great for standstill power shots that need a little ooomph to get going without proper footing/run up.  Hyzerflipped very easily and would turn and burn if not controlled with form/power.

Great for swooping an anhyzer around obstacle, very fast, nice glide, still stable enough to flatten out and usually hyzer back, but this really bombs a long anhyzer, NOT recommended with any headwind or a flat release.  TAILWIND BOMBER! Also, Great finesse distance driver

Heather Leatherman Star: 175g PLH middle: #'s 12/5/-2.5/2 -> This was visually more stable than the regular Star, the PLH was visually higher than the Star.  Firmer plastic.  Flew excellent.  Definitely had turn on it, but wasn't as touchy as the Star. Was able to get nice long Slight hyzer release shots to pan out into a S shape. At high speed will turn nicely, enough stability to come back and shape.  Threw a great uphill drive up and over rocks/structure panned L>R anny through the trees and came back, Like a more distance Sidewinder, comfortable flight.  Not recommended in a Headwind

Champion:175g PLH highest #'s 12/5/-1.5/2.5 -> This tern was by far the most stable. Took a lot of power to get Full S.  Not greatest for hyzerflipping an anhyzer, but great for Hyzer flipping for a straighter flight.  Still finished stable.  Better in wind for sure

All in All the Tern is a sweet driver.  PLASTIC MAKES THE DIFFERENCE...and WEIGHT so be aware.   Which can be a great thing if you want to get a few+ of the same mold but get a slightly different flight.   I dig it.

I was blown away by what the Tern can do. Wish I had heard about this years ago. I am a RHBH noodle-arm. This goes 50-75 ft further (for me) than any other disc I own (50+ discs). I use it for uphill shots (high-speed turn), wide open bomb drives, anhyzer curves in certain situations.

It's also the go to driver of pro Valerie Jenkins.

I have an orange 163g Star Tern.  Considering that I am a tall (6'4"), noodle-armed non-power-thrower, I thought the Tern might be too much for me.  However, I am finding that the Tern performs very well for me.  The fade is not as much as I thought it'd be.  I really like it on uphill shots, where understable speed discs tend to perform better.  The Tern will continue to have a place in my bag for a long time.

It does tend to get kicked around in a headwind, though, so be wary of that.  Also, I've improved in my form and technique and getting that -snap- on the end of my hard throws, so I'm throwing the Tern better and better.  Ergo, my advice to beginners is that the Tern is a good first high-speed driver disc... but be sure to learn good throwing form if you're going to use it.

(Edited 5/20/15)  The Tern has become more understable for me, but it is still in my "core" bag for uphill shots, long anhyzers, and hyzer-flips if I need a straight shot.  It still does not like headwinds.

I picked a star Tern and it had the flight readings of 12 6 -4 2 which is fairly close to a Vulcan but slightly slower with more glide. I can only throw this disc RHBH, when I try and flick it the disc instantly crashes and burns. This disc likes to be throw high and is very hard to keep low to the ground. I mostly use this disc on wide open holes that are 400+ when the winds are calm. Although it is a good disc i am undecided on it

My go to distance driver. This thing is incredibly fun to throw. Nice big s, and it goes about 50 feet further than any of my other drivers.

Gotta love this disc!! My son let me throw his Champion Tern last summer and I was not too impressed. I don't think I had the arm for it and it was too stable for me to hyzer flip. I picked up a white 164 Star Tern at a tournament with some script and really started to like this disc. I now have 3 Star Tern 164,171,174 and they are pretty sweet. Got my first ace ever about 3 weeks ago in a tournament. 1st hole 1st throw of the day -307 feet slightly downhill with trees behind the basket and traditionally a hyzer route because of a 2 trees almost center of the fairway. I was third in the box with a couple of pros from our club and was pretty nervous. I had a short x step and ripped it flat - it sat up and ran straight at it! It looked sorta low but just cleared the basket dead center. Great disc for beginners and veterans. Tons of glide but not too great in heavy winds.

This is a pretty nice disc. Brand new it will fly dead straight, with maybe a bit of left fade (for RHBH) at the end. After a while though it will turn into a nice understable driver, perfect for massive anhyzers.
