A great workhorse midrange. If you have more than 250ft of power and don't mind the bead you will like throwing this disc. I have a fresh Star Roc3 that I only throw when I need a dependable OS fade, and a couple of DX that have a bit more glide and more neutral in stability. Great disc to cycle. Handles wind well. Flat and easy to forehand. Easy to power grip. The bead does not feel uncomfortable. Give it more than 250ft of power and I can get a straight shot 280ft. Give it more height and it will fade and get more distance. Power down and it makes a great overstable approach disc. In calm conditions and flat ground, I have pushed this disc past 300 many times. For those looking to minimize molds I think this is a disc to consider.

I would feel bad about giving the Roc3 less than 2 stars because at the end of the day it is a functioning disc that manages to barely be useful. That is where the positives end. This disc feels nothing like the standard roc, the bead is far too pronounced especially considering the slimmed down frame. The disc is not overstable, its barely stable at all. It does not fight the wind and yet manages to basically drop out of the sky with kind of pathetic distance.

I also tried the disc in DX plastic, still very uncomfortable but it did seem glider and still had the same flight.

This disc is probably my favorite disc to throw. Out of the box, it is an overstable midrange with a pretty substantial fade. As you wear it in, it gets surprisingly straight, but still stable with fade. I like this in a heavier weight and can really give it power, but it will not flip, stays straight, then fads at the end with minimal ground action. One of the few discs that I would feel really lost without in my bag.

This is by far the staple disc to the sport. If you were looking for only one disc to go play a round with, this disc would have to be the disc to pick up and go hit the fairways with. The roc3 is definitely more over stable in the roc family but it is very consistent and trusted amongst many players for its true flight characteristics and great distance for a mid range disc. The bead of this disc is either a must for its nostalgia or some will hate it. There are alternative versions of the roc3 without the bead if that is something that you don't like. Personally I think that the bead gives it more stability and feels of a more trusted release every time that it leaves your hand. It will always finish slightly to the left or more so to the left depending on how you throw it. If you need a disc to wrap around a corner or an obstacle at the end of your throw then this is definitely a must to bag.

It's a great stable midrange, I just don't currently use it too much. I have a few other discs that feel better in my hand and fly similarly. I'm happy that I have one to fill a specific kind of neutral flight slot.

First bought disc and my most thrown.

Midrange with a straight flight, lots of glide with dependable fade. A more straight disc than other midranges I've tried out. Fade is not too hard to make accurate shots. For me its less overstable than a classic Roc.

Star plastic is durable and grippy with small bead.

I was looking for a consistent midrange and that would fly straight and have some fade at the end. That is exactly what the Roc3 does. It is very helpful with close shots and even putting sometimes!! This is a great disc and would recommend it.

The Roc3 is the older brother of the rock. Requires a little more speed to throw. I do still have to say, that I would have rather bought this is champion plastic, as mine is less overstable than I want. I still use this, but I have more trust with my Roc as I know that it is going to have a consistent fade in the end. Overall, this disc is still great and is kinda like the mako3

I love this mid. I always carry at least two dx roc3's in my bag in different states of wear. They feel so great in the hand and beat in nicely to become super straight and understable. The Roc3 is a disc that I would recommend to any player looking for a super reliable mid that they can cycle through to get any flight characteristic you want.

This reliable midrange found its way into my bag and is quickly accumulating more throws than my Buzz SS. While the two discs have different flight patterns, I've found the Roc3's modest hyzer finish consistent on forehand and backhand approaches to avoid obstacles. Throwing from an anhyzer position gives this disc even more versatility in navigating obstacles by giving the disc a soft 's' curve before a consistent hyzer finish. Star plastic feels good in the hand, is pliable for different grips, and seems to 'stick' better to the ground upon impact, resulting in less unfavorable rolls. If anything, the only downside with this particular mold is some inconsistencies in flight due to a more flat or bubbly flight plate.

Star plastic. 158g. <-- will be buying this same mold in a heavier weight at a later date.

The roc3 is very versatile disc. It's got a very big deed along with a very unusual rim and edge. For its over stability rating, it surely seems to fly very dependently on the angle it's thrown. If I Hyzer flip it, it'll fly towards its original flight ratings. Although if I throw it flat or even with the slightest bit of anhyzer, it'll act as if it's more understandable with a turn of -2 and a fade of 3. Now I've heard a lot about this disc and I've been told that it's versatility is meant for such things, but unless you have a very good angle control and overall precision? This disc would be very difficult to throw for confident play. If you're getting this disc to use for its over stability mainly, I would recommend getting it in champion plastic.

I absolutely love the ROC3 and think it is a dramatic upgrade of the ROC.  Give this one a good rip and watch it stick to your line like glue for a long ways before consistently fading at the end.  After a while the fade becomes less pronounced, thus becoming a crucial part of your game.  The fade is still enough to be reliable in a headwind, but not too much that you can't trust it in tight windows.  Right now, my ROC3 flies as straight as my Mako3, but has a slight fade at the end.  The flat top just fits my hand and instills confidence in executing the shot.  This disc is going to stay in my bag for a very long time!

I like this disc quite a bit. The star plastic feels great in my hands, and the disc does exactly what I need it to. That being said, I don't use it very often. On the courses I frequent, I usually don't need such an overstable midi. When I need it, I'm usually scrambling because of a bad kick, or I'm needing a spike hyzer. When I need it, I really need it, but that isn't often. I wouldn't give this to a beginner at all. Chances are they don't have the ability to use such a disc.

So just purchased this disc, have only thrown at a field and once at the course.   Compliments my Buzzz, still figuring out the best times to use.  The disc does feel good in the hand and fly's nice.  When comparing to the Buzzz, the Buzzz is straighter for me, I can get more angles out of the Roc3.  Will find a place in my bag for sure because of the extra versatility it offers.

Easily my go to most trusted midrange disc in my bag. I can rip this disc as hard as I want and it will flip up to flat and and the fade out at the end. I can get a little turn out of the disc but nothing where I have to worry about turning it over and missing my line. I'm not too fond of midrange forehands, but this disc can hold up the the torque and keeps perfectly straight for me. Any higher intermediate level and above player should carry this disc, beginners can bag this disc for windier days I would say.

The Roc3 is a very versatile midrange disc and is a must have for beginners. It's 3 fade isn't super noticeable but definitely does affect the end of the flight. The Roc 3 is great for open field shots with the predictable hyzer. It is also great for shots that need to hyzer. It is even great for shots that need to be turned over without worrying about the disc dropping and rolling. At first I used this disc a ton but after I picked up a pig I must say I prefer that for most shots. I mostly use the Roc3 for longer upshots or upshots where I need more glide.

I think this disc is kinda hit or miss. i got one as a gift that was pretty beat in but flew in a perfect straight line on a hyzer flip so i bought another one and the new one is a little more stable but has a pretty big dome compared to the other one. still a nice disc but i must say i like the rat a little bit more for feel and less bead.

I have the Roc3 in both DX and Star plastic. The Star plastic is a bit newer, but still excellent in the wind and for those hook shots that you need an overstable disc for. It's dependable fade is quite excellent. The DX plastic beat in quite quickly and has become one of the straightest shooters in my bag. Not quite a laser, but close!

I purchased a 177g Star Roc3 after trying one in DX plastic and I'm very happy I did. It feels really good in the hand for a backhand and gets sneaky distance for an overstable mid range. It's not a meat hook, but it's stable enough to hold a straight line with a dependable fade at the end. I never throw it forehand as I would rather throw a Discraft Zone for that kind of shot.

My go-to midrange disc. When thrown flat, it will fly flat for the majority of the flight and always, dependably fade back left. I love throwing this disc with the slightest amount of anhyzer and watch it glide right for about half the flight before starting it's fade back to left. This disc can be used for a number of different shot types by manipulating the angle of release and is very dependable. In the star plastic I've noticed very little change in the original flight characteristics, but it's still pretty much the same as the day I got it.

The Roc3 is confused what it wants to be and what it wants to do. The flight rating says it has 3 fade, yet it doesn't fade like any other 3 fade disc I've ever thrown. You can throw this thing on slight anhyzer, and it will take 60% of it's flight to start flipping up. I can throw a Gator (an Innova disc that also has a 3 fade rating), throw it on the same line, and the Gator will take no time at all to pop back to flat.

People also recommend these for your go-to midrange, yet it has too much fade to be predictable when thrown for approach.

And besides that, the bead makes this uncomfortable to throw forehand, so there's no way it can be a Swiss Army Knife of a midrange.

I'm amending my original review because it's just not true anymore. The Roc3 always fades, which is great, but sometimes you need a mid that does more. And it's for that reason, I am looking to replace this slot in my bag. I LOVE THIS DISC, please do not get confused. But I'm starting to look for something a little straighter.

    ORIGINAL REVIEW:

The Roc3 is the best mid-range disc on the market.

A flatter version of the Roc for higher arm speeds and farther distance.

I use this off the tee and for approaches, backhand or forehand. If you want slightly different flights out of the same mold, bag a few Roc3s in different plastics and everything but turnover shots are in your bag. I use Star the most because it's easy to get flat, but I love the overstability of my MF Champion for FH or S shots and I just started using the McPro to replace DX on big hyzers.

Ultimately, Roc3s are the center of my bag. And I can throw these 300 feet even in a headwind. So if you like Innova bird discs like Teebirds, Thunderbirds, Aviars or Firebirds already and haven't thrown a Roc3, give it a shot.

The Roc3 is my go to midrange for a variety of shots. I will carry 2-4 roc3s in a variety of plastics depending on the course I'm playing.

Pro plastic will provide a little straighter flight with more glide. I will use it for wooded lines that I need a fairly straight flight without turning over to the right.

I will use a star and metal flake champion roc3 for gentle hyzers from 250-300+ either in the woods or in the open.

I recently started throwing the Joe Revere Color Glow roc3 and it has the most reliable fade of any roc3s I've thrown without being dumpy. If I need to make sure I get that fade from 250-275 I'm going with this disc.

I would recommend beginners start with the Roc for a midrange to learn their lines. As arm speed increases or if you need a touch more stability, then pick up a Roc3 and enjoy the results.

The Roc3 is a pretty typical midrange. Not too different from the Roc, just slightly faster. The stability is fairly stable. The in hand feel is quite comfortable, again pretty typical to a mid range. In reality nothing too special about the Roc3.

The stability is stable, it isn't overstable, I am able to get it to hold various anhyzer lines. They usually do come out of the anhyzer and fade to the left (RHBH). The Roc3 is pretty good for distance and very reliably straight flight paths. THe Roc3 is a decent all around mid range, you can almost use it for any type of shot.

Overall there aren't any negative things with the disc. I like other mid ranges more, merely for the fact that I have used the other ones longer than this one. It is a good disc and it is reliable. I like that it is a faster speed than the Roc, because it can handle more power. If you're looking for a new midrange to try out, this one will not disappoint you.

This is one of my favorite discs.  I love the durability of the star plastic. I had a KC pro roc and loved it as well.  Its not very tall, so to speak, so it did take some getting used to the feel of it, and the fade is strong.  Strong enough to perform flex shots with, although that's not my favorite thing to do. I'd rather just use an understable disc for that purpose.  However, after a bad drive this disc has saved par for me so many times.  With its high speed, for a midrange, and strong dependable fade this disc has found a place in my bag and won't be taken out anytime soon.

I have been throwing a Star Roc3 and am not impressed so far. There is something about the was it feels when I am throwing it. It feels good in my hand until just before it leave my hand. The odd feeling I get makes me release the disc awkwardly and it has a tremendous fade. Not quit a meathook but close.

IMHO when one puts a Roc or Roc3 into one's bag, one has "graduated" to a new disc golf level.  I just went there with the GStar Roc3.  Over the past month and a half I've acquired a Factory 2nd GStar Roc3 (177g), flat as a pancake almost to the point of being concave;  a GStar Roc3 (176g) that clearly says "Roc3" on the front, but underneath has heiroglyphics that looks something like "Gs/D2" and it's not totally flat, just a touch of dome;  and an F2 Star Roc3 (180g) that is about the same slight dome as the second disc. (Edited to add:  acquired a McPro plastic Roc3 180g as well.  VERY plastic, feels great to throw!)

The Star plastic is stiffer than GStar of course, but all the discs fly about the same;  certainly I can't tell too much difference on approach shots of 150 feet and in.  I personally prefer the stiffer Star and McPro plastics, but the GStar will do well in colder winter temperatures, I'm sure.

All my Roc3s fly very well.  I was pleasantly surprised that, while there is a fade, that fade on the Roc3 is not nearly as strong as I expected, certainly not a "3" if not thrown too high.  The Roc3 glides well and pretty straight with some fade finish at the very end.  I tend to put just a touch of hyzer on my throws and get an excellent curve going right towards the basket every time.  If I do throw it flat, it will skip upon hitting the ground, and that's very cool when I can aim low and a bit short of the basket and let the disc and ground do the work to park it close.  I look forward to seeing how each of the discs wear in over time as I rotate them into my bag.

Consider me a satisfied graduate to the Roc3! :-)

Edited 5/2015 to add:  the limited run McPro plastic Roc3s are the bee's knees.  Stiff as a board, and will wear in with use. I anticipate using the McPro Roc3 for straight shots eventually while my Star Roc3s will be my more overstable compliment.
