The Rhyno in Champion plastic is probably the most trusted and dependable disc in my bag. It is my most thrown disc besides my putting putter. It is an ultra reliable approach disc and I mainly use it for this purpose on just about any approach within 175'. I will also occasionally throw it off the tee on short holes that can accommodate it's overstable line, or as a putting putter when there is strong wind. Getting the action of this disc down immediately shaved strokes off my game...
And yet when I first held it in my hand as a beginner, I hated it. I am not a big thumb track person. It felt deep and the rim felt kind of sharp. I threw it and it didn't go very far and faded hard into the ground (little did I know this is what makes the Rhyno so great). I almost got rid of it, but dug it back out after I had been playing for a little while and discovered it's magic. When I need an approach under 150', I pull this baby out, let her rip a little to the right of my target and watch it float out a bit before hooking up and diving to the ground with very little action, usually nestled within a few feet of the basket. Despite the feeling of the rim, I've found I get ultra-consistent releases with it. You can rip on the Rhyno and it won't turn over. I use it almost exclusively backhand, but I know there are people out there that flick it too. Calvin Heimburg uses Rhynos, to great effect, and you might hear Big Jerm call it his "velcro Rhyno" or "parachute Rhyno". That's a perfect example of what it does - it gets out to it's target, then it puts on the brakes and stops.
Every player needs a disc that does what the Rhyno does (that is, an overstable approach disc with low speed and low glide). The Rhyno is my favorite, but the Pig is a very similar alternative if you can't stand beaded rims. The Pig, Harp, Zone, Berg - they all do somewhat similar things but none of them quite had the magic for me that the Rhyno does. I prefer it in durable Champion plastic as I think the stability is very important part of it's action, and I also don't want it's dependable flight to change at all. I find even in Champ that the ground play is very minimal. I do think it's a hair straighter than the flight ratings, suggest, I rated the fade a 2.5. It's still not going to turn over on you, even powered up. I rated this Somewhat Beginner Friendly because while I think this disc would benefit new players, it does take some understanding of fade and how to use that to your advantage to unlock this disc. 5 star disc and one that will always have a spot in my bag.
