The Prodigy A1 is a utility approach disc. The A1 is one of the more overstable discs of its speed on the market. The A1 is a popular choice for power throwers looking for an overstable disc that won't fly too far, and won't turn over in any wind conditions.

The A1 in the 400 plastic is my favorite disc in my bag. It is more stable than a zone, or a pig, or most other stable throwing putters or approach discs. It has a very sharp angled beveled edge that feels incredible for forehands and a nice bead that helps with my grip too. I can always rely on this disc coming out of whatever anhyzer angle I put on it both forehand and backhand and it is very hard to overthrow your target with this disc. Beginners would actually fare well with it as long as they know what they are throwing, but the consistency of it I think would help a lot of players with their approach game.

This disc is far more overstable than any Zone, Harp, A2, or any other approach disc with similar numbers. The only approach disc I've thrown that is more overstable is the AGL Discs Baobab (if you know, you know).

The first time I threw this disc, I couldn't believe how quickly it faded out. Thrown hard and flat, I don't know if I threw it more than 200'. Now that I've beat it in over the last 18-24 months, it finally shows a little bit of turn before that fade kicks in. Mine is a bit domey, which is my only complaint. But the flight is so good that I tolerate it.

This is the most overstable putt/approach disc I have thrown to date!  I wouldn't dream of actually putting with it.... this is for safe approaches and short lines weaving through obstacles.  Here are my 3 uses for it:

    1. Safe Approaches:  once the spin starts to die, it will dump very very quickly to the ground.  Based on the shape and depending on plastic, you can dump it into a hill and have a good chance of a sit instead of a rollaway.

    2. Hyzer Around Obstacles:  the combination of low glide and extreme stability mean you can throw it up in the air around trees and it will make a 90 degree turn for you.  It's hard to do this with a driver because you might get too much of a skip and/or roll if you throw low, and you might get into tree branches if you throw high.

    3. Forceover and Force Flex:  this is a very easy forceover disc at short range, if you don't trust your sidearm.  I would prefer to throw sidearm instead of forceover, but if you really play your backhand angles you can do any forceover line with this, as long as it's shorter range.

Overall this disc has a lot of utility and could replace up to 3 discs in your bag.

Like the A2 and A3, the A1 is a beefy overstable approach disc. I did find this to be a hair more overstable than the other two, but all of them do the job. It really comes down to a preference in feel.

I recently added the A1 to my bag, and absolutely love it. To sum it up, it is a "slower Firebird." This disc is incredibly overstable - it will never turn over, and even shots on a large anhyzer angle will come back. This disc gave me a reliably overstable disc for spike hyzers and short forehands on holes that are too short to use a Firebird.

I have a 174g 400s A1 and love it for short approach shot either back hand or forehand. This thing has some fade! Will not turn over ever. About 200' is all I can get out of it on a full power throw. It definitely fills a hole in prodigy's line. Will make a 90 deg turn line a champ.

    As Advertised!

When this disc was announced, there was a lot of talk that this was going to be prodigy's attempt to compete with the popular Zone from Discraft. As it turns out, that isn't the case here. In fact, the A1 is a completly unique disc. If I had to put a description on it, I would say it's a "Suspect OS" but that isn't exactly apt either, as the Supect is flat and the A1 has quite a noticeable dome on it.

The rim feels comfortable in the hand..thicker than a putter but not by much. It does release quickly, but it isn't a rocket out of the hands by any means. The A1 is overstable enough that it doesn't really ever get to flat. To flatten it out, you really need to put some anhyzer on it. Makes for a great sidearm and overhand disc as well.

The A1 is a fun disc, but for almost every disc golf player, however, this disc will be a mere novelty. It is great for trick shots and the like, but won't be a disc you find yourself reaching for very much, unless you have a lot of power (pro level) or a total torque monkey

This is exactly what I was looking for in an approach disc. Much more overstable than my slightly overstable champion roc3 that I use for some approaches. In some cases, a midrange has too much glide; other times, my PA1 is a little too understable for some of the hyzer approaches I need to throw.

After playing a few rounds and field testing the A1. I think I have a pretty good grip on the disc. To me, this is like a slightly slower, more overstable Gator. I can forehand this disc about 150 to 200 feet, which is much shorter than the Gator. Skip shots are pretty easy with this disc if you throw it low, but throw it on a high hyzer route and the disc will just bounce and fall close to the target. I also really like this disc for throwing downhill. For open downhill shots, I just throw it on a wide hyzer and it will fade down towards the target.

I would recommend this disc to advanced players as a great utility disc. I usually throw this disc around 5-8 times a round, and sometimes off the tee. This disc makes anhyzer forehand upshots fairly easy due to the overstability of the disc. This disc will not turn into a roller on my anhyzer forehand upshots. The only time I throw this disc off the tee is for short holes that favor a turn to the right around 150 - 200 feet. I'm excited to see what Prodigy has is store for the upcoming A2 and A3.

So far, so good in the overstable mid-range category.

Comparing it to:  Gator, Zone, and Justice

Very similar flight to Gator and Zone.  Will always come back, no question.  You can put this thing on a serious turnover path and it will come back without question.  Cannot wait to try this in headwinds.

That being said, it is pretty much a Zone/Gator mixed with a Justice.  I would compare the beginning flight a Zone in that it will hold a decent hyzer line for at least half the flight.  This is where things change a bit.  A Zone will then drop off but not ridiculously.  The A1 drops hard at end like a Justice, or even in Prodigy terms an X1.  It comes down hard at a steep angle.

Will this prevent skips?  Ideally, yes. But that hard drop off can cause more skippage than you would see with a Zone or Gator on harder surfaces or ones with a lot of dirt vs grass.

Overall a nice addition to the Prodigy lineup that fills a hole they had.  Does it do anything the others do not?  I don't think so.  As with most Prodigy, you/I get it for the plastic. This 400s plastic feels great.

So if you are looking for a utility disc for short upshots, and especially flicks, this would make a great addition to your bag.  I honestly do not care for the dome or most Gators, and the Justice is almost too overstable for the kind of apppraoch flicks I like.

I would put the A1 and Zone neck and neck for short approaches or where the wind makes you think twice.

After some use with the A1 Here's what I got so far

    - It is very overstable (most people know this already)
    - When it Hyzers out it moves a lot of Lateral movement, It doesn't just Spike.
~ I was able to make a 90 degree turn shot that moved and skipped far to the side to allow a closer shot
-It's a nice speed of disc, any slower and it wouldn't be capable of making the full flight path. Any faster and it's not going to have the control that it does
-It's faster than a putter, Not nearly thin like a mid. It's a shape that almost seems familiar. Unique though

I would give flight numbers 4/3/+0.5/3 - Something like that.

I hope to see this in the nice Gray/White 400G plastic someday. Good disc

***UPDATE: I got out to my local course which is where I use a Firebird quite a bit for Basic Hyzer shots and Forehands and a couple skip shots.

I used the A1 instead for all these.  Basically it's like a slower, shorter firebird.......if you want to hear that.  I had some nice power shots that were played out to cut hyzer and dive and skip up a lil bit.  Parked many shots, couple out of trouble shots.

It's a nice Very Overstable Short range disc.  It's not a putter by any means, its not really a midrange, its a tweener, and it's really nice.  I like it.  It's staying in the bag.
