I got my Opto Culverin used, and it is the only one I have ever tried. So while I can't speak to how they fly new, I do know that they beat into some of the most awesome stable fliers I've tried. My Culverin thrown flat will have a slight hint of turn through the high speed flight, and then a predictable but still gentle fade on the end. It does this all while flying a long way due to its incredible glide. Suffice it to say this disc bombs for me, and does it with a predictable flight which gives me great confidence.

Mine's only 169 so not quite as overstable as advertised but I don't mind! I have bad form and tend to put a lot OAT on my full power drives and the Culverin doesn't mind at all. It just flies straight down the fairway with a solid fade at the end. It's also great for forehand drives. Does pretty well in moderate winds as well but I've not tested it in anything above 20 mph. Pretty much the definition of a workhorse fairway/control driver.

The culverin is a great overstable to stable fairway driver. You can trust that this disc will not get much high speed turn and will always fade for you at the end of the flight. It is not so overstable that it won't go straight or far. It is more of a straight flying disc that starts to fade at about half of its flight. I can really utilize the culverin on a lot of different holes at varying distanced because you can throw it on a big spike hyzer and know it won't flip up straight, you can throw it straight down a fairway and trust it wont get too flippy. Lastly you can throw this disc on a nice long hard anhyzer line and watch it fight out for a full flight with some killer distance. I find this to be a truly workable overstable fairway driver. If you are looking for something like a notch under the firebird, something that is more useable for all shots than a firebird, check out the culverin. It feels amazing for backhand shots and my terrible forehand is able to use this disc well for spike hyzer shots. Beginners should stay away from this disc until they have the armspeed to throw more understable to stable 9 speed discs. Or when they need a consistent fading stable fairway.

I got an Opto Culverin based on the similar flight numbers to the Longbowman that I use for both FH and BH drives and approaches.  I wanted to use the Culverin exclusively for a BH overstable roller to hit a precise gap and it works well for that but not consistently enough to take up a slot in my bag.

I have since changed to the Hatchet for backhand rollers since it ends up straighter and longer than the Culverin or Longbowman after many comparitive throws.

I got this disc a a couple years ago, around the time I started moving from a casual player, playing about 5-10 times a year, to a more serious player with at least a round every week. This was a mystery disc and I was little disappointed that I got something that didn't seem to be thrown by a lot of players. The disc was also 168 which is lighter than what I usually throw.

This disc surprised the heck out of me. This handles low backhands and forehands so well. Anywhere within 250-325, this is likely what I'm using, especially if I need to go straight and then sharp around a corner. This disc can definitely give you more distance, but it starts to be little less predictable when you're putting a lot on it.

For me, this is a fairway driver version of  a Emac Truth. Highly recommended.

My disc has metallic flecks. I think it was a special edition. I'm hoping it flies like the regular opto because I just ordered another one.

This is my favorite disc and my go to workhorse fairway. I have two in literally all plastics (from least stable to most stable: opto air, recycled, gold line, opto, moonshine) and usually bag 3-4 in different plastics per round. It is similar to a thunderbird but with a touch more glide and high speed turn. For my turnover shots I use a 160g opto air which is flippy as hell, however if it is windy I will go for my beat in 171g recycled culverin which is less finicky in the wind but still has a lot of turn and can also hold a turnover line the whole way if necessary. When I am trying to go long but can't disc up because I need to hit a gap or something, I grab my seasoned 168g gold line which I can smash on a hyzer  (RHBH) and it will flip up and coast for about 300ft before a very gentle fade, maybe I have mine very well seasoned but a seasoned gold line tends to penetrate and finishing forward instead of dumping and fading. When I need a reliable fade I go to my 175g opto culverin, it won't go as far as my gold line but I can trust it to fight back left (for RHBH) no matter what. I haven't used my 180g moonshine culverin much but when the winds are really strong I use this in place of my opto culverin since the moonshine plastic has a bit more high speed stability compared to the opto in my experience (however I do feel like the moonshine and opto get redundant, thus why I almost never bag the moonshine). I described the flight characteristics for RHBH shots however I am a RHFH dominant player and the flight characteristics/plastic stabilities are the same for forehand shots. This disc fits very comfortably in hand and I personally prefer throwing flat-topped disc for forehands and the culverin is definitely flat-topped (although not the flattest disc you'll find). This has and will be in my bag for a very long time!

I have a Culverin in 174g Opto plastic. The rim is comfortable, I love the Opto plastic and it is fairly flat on top. I got this disc when I was exploring different Trilogy fairway drivers and it has gone in and out of my bag over the past few years. It's never been one of my most used discs but it definitely has some good uses for me. When I throw this disc hard with a touch of hyzer it flips up to flat, glides fairly well (as the numbers suggest) and then finishes with a strong fade at the end. Because of the flip and glide it's not great for pure hyzer shots where you want the disc to fade out quickly and predictably, but it is nice for longer shots that need a strong finish or for flex shots. I think the closest comparison would be a Convict but with more glide. I agree with the numbers 9/5/-0.5/3.

This was the first driver that I actually felt like I could handle. Mine is pretty beat in so it holds a line pretty well but still plays with wind very well. I have an average drive distance of 390 and I can get this to go 350 pretty consistently with a reliable fade.

This is a very dependable disc that is great for all around control/fairway driver shots. It has a good combination of speed, stability, and glide to really get you down the fairway pretty far. Some people compare this to a thunderbird, but I believe it is a little less stable out of the box and has less high speed stability when beaten in. It handles wind decently, but could turn a little more than you’d want. I can see someone bagging this one disc in different stabilities and have this as their workhorse control/fairway driver. Moreover, if L64 comes out with an opto-x version, you can just erase my comment about finickiness headwinds.

First off, you are going to want a strong arm to get a full flight out of this disc. For me, I can rip on this disc as hard as possible and get it to sit up straight then consistently fade out left on a hard gliding slope. What I love most about this disc is that the fade is a gradual, yet hard fade. It doesn't spend much time flying straight before it begins its fade, but it fades a long way very gradually. This makes the disc very consistent and controllable. It also does a fantastic job in the wind. I really consider this as the Explorer's big brother if you love L64 products, which you absolutely should! They both do about the same thing just the Culverin has a bit more speed. Get it in opto for really durable use in forest bashing rounds!

Im a beginner and have a "good" arm but poor form so i hold back on power and i can throw this disc 250 all day with the same predictable left finish (right hand forehand).

I have one of these in opto at 172g and a Scythe in opto at 171g. With my arm i get about 10 yards more with the Culverin but i get about 5 yards more fade with the Scythe. That said once my form and gets better i will be able to throw at full power and let it rip.

If you have good form and a big arm id look into the Scythe for the straight line barrels to a strong fade finish.  If your arm isnt that big but still want a stiaght line with dependable fade the culverin is a great choice.

I know once my form is better my scythe will be my go to driver but for now the culverin is my #1 but i know one day it will be a great compliment to my Scythe.

This is the best overall control driver I've thrown yet.  I like the Opto over the Gold line because it keeps it's stability a bit longer.  This thing is great on soft hyzers or on straight shots that need a touch of fade at the end.  Primarily throw it backhand but it can work on the forehand as well.

This is a great disc for moderate arms. I have one of the original decodyes 173 and opto 171, and briefly owned a 175 x-out opto. They're not my go-to workhorse drivers with good distance and reliability.

For my they're faster teebirds: shapable, FH or BH, wind-fighting, and point-and-shoot with a healthy finish. They really can do a lot when you get to know them. It is not as stable as folks seem to be saying. I strongly believe they have a -1 turn and 2.5 fade.

If your max distance is 375-425, use this go 25 ft less and stay one the fairway or weave through the woods.

The Culverin is currently my favorite disc in the bag. This disc, for me, is a perfect compliment to the Convict and the Felon. Where my Convict is going to hyzer flip, turn over and fade slightly at the end, and my Felon fight left (right hand backhand) the entire flight unless forced on an anhyzer, the Culverin is going to fly straight and still have a nice strong left finish at the end. For me, this is my go-to disc in the woods. It is so easy to manipulate with the lower speed, and extremely predictable. For me this disc glides like a Convict and fades like a Felon.

I typically never throw it more than 70-80% throw speed and am consistently getting 320-380ft with it. The reason I say that this is a neutral disc and can be thrown by beginners or skilled players is because you don't have to be able to throw hard to get a great flight out of the disc. If you haven't tried this disc and you're looking for controllable distance I highly recommend the Culverin.

I got the Culverin in Opto plasgtic at 172 g. I am nearly 60 yrs old and I believe I have average form and strength for an Intermediate Grand Master player.

    I am lovin this disc!

I just recently put this one in my bag as we've been having nothing but 30 to 45 mph winds and my max weight Star Wraith is getting kinda beat in and isn't handling the strong winds so well.

The Culverin is a dream in strong head winds! I can reliably crank this baby up and it holds a long straight flight with a reliable fade.

For me the ratings seem pretty spot on, although I am tempted to give it a 10 for speed, as you can really rip this one, and the speed seems not too far off of my Wraith or even my Opto Flow.

I also bag a Gold Line Saint Pro which like the name implies is very reliable in the wind. I would say my Saint Pro has noticeably more early turn and a little less fade than the Culverin. The main thing is that the Culverin is simply even MORE reliable!  This disc just flys straight and finishes left (RHBH) under every condition.

I have thrown this disc and  the long bowman back to back in different winds and the one true difference is the culverin flew a little farther and straighter before fading out. It works great for headwind straight shots where my FD cant handle it. Just a faster stable teebird....... Great for advanced players looking for a straight flier in a headwind and beginners may like it for sidearm shots

First Impression: Wow! This disc is awesome! -- First throw was about a 375 foot hyzer with a little bit of turn at the beginning of the flight

Feel in the hand: The Culverin feels really nice when held in the hand, reminds me of a Champion Thunderbird or a Discmania C-Line PD It feels similar to other 9 speed discs, so I would say the speed is spot on. It is a nice Fairway-Distance hybrid mold. It is definitely a flat disc, not much dome to it at all.

Flight Characteristics: I really liked the flight of the Culverin. I was expecting a more straight flight, mainly because Latitude usually overestimates their discs on the stamp. This one said "Overstable Control Driver." Considering they call the Saint "stable" (but is really pretty understable), I figured this would be a straight, slightly stable disc. I was wrong. This diisc is nice and stable!! I couldn't get a full flight out of it unless I was going for maximum distance on a slight anhyzer line. The stability is very noticeable when throwing between the 300-400 distance range. I was maxing out at about 410 with this disc; every time I thought I crushed one it would come fighting out near the end of the flight, not giving it that extra 50ish feet to be over 450 feet.

Disc Comparison: This disc to me flies most like Discmania's C-Line PD. When you pick it up and see the reviews, you're looking for a sick spike hyzer disc, one more overstable than a CD2 or Thunderbird. When thrown, it is found to be a little less stable than that anticipated hog-overstable disc. To me this disc is a slower more controllable GoldLine Flow.

Conclusion: The Culverin is awesome. When I practiced for the Ledgestone Insurance Open this year (2016), I had the pleasure of practicing with Cameron Colglazier, who had good things to say about the Culverin. This is what motivated me to grab one and try it out, and I was not disappointed! This disc will be a fantastic addition to any Advanced level golfer up to the pro level. I would not recommend this disc to new players, because it will be too stable. My flight ratings are 9,5,-1,2.5. I gave it less fade and a little more turn than the original last 2 ratings of 0,3. This is because I think the Opto Culverin is much more workable than an 0,3 disc is. Most 0,3 discs don't allow much more than a single flight, even when put on a good flex line. If you get over the top of a Culverin, it will hold just that little extra that makes me think there is a little turn to the flight characteristics, and slightly less fade than given.

Opto 172. This disc is a great disc. It bumped my longbowman out of my bag since it can do the same things, is more versitile, and flies further. It can hit the sharp hyzer shots as well as very straight lines with an ending, forward fade. I really like it for tight shots that I need to finish on the right (LHBH). It is very consistent and I can see this disc being in my bag for awhile. I'd imagine it will get a small amount of turn as it breaks in, but out of the box there isn't much. It is also very good for FH shots.

I was a huge fan of the Discmania PD.  I decided to switch to trilogy and was worried about not having a similar mold.  Well I found it!  The Culverin is like that perfect PD but with a little more glide.  Straight for days with a decent fade at the end.  Loves big sweeping hyzers and can be flexed over a bit for a nice a turn.  I have max weight opto.  Cannot speak to lighter weights or different plastics.  Love this disc.

It's true, this is a great disc.  I got it as an impulse-buy [walk into a pro shop, you don't walk out empty-handed, yah know?], and I continue to be very glad I got it.

Indeed very comparable to an Innova Thunderbird..  It will go completely straight and resist turning, until it's forward-penetrating fade takes over.  But it is a late fade!  So you don't have to worry about this thing being a super-hookshot, I use it to get through windows and tunnels.

I knocked the glide rating down a tiny bit though, because I don't really think this thing, like, hovers amazingly or anything..  It's not bad, but it's not a 'float' disc in my opinion either.

Mine is starting to beat in at this point [GASP - Opto plastic beats in?!], which is actually fairly early since it's not that old..  Though I do use it a lot.  So I can say that when it starts to beat it, it's simply got a little less fade and a tiny bit of turn right out of the hand [maybe like a -0.5]..  But it is still very consistent.  I'll probably get another one.  :D

I really like the Culverin, and was impressed with its stability. I was expecting a slightly more strait/slightly understable disc, but the max weight one I got is pretty stable! I haven't thrown it so much that I would consider it broken in, and I am throwing at 4,500 feet.

I would compare it to a Thunderbird or Convict type disc. On a good day when I am warmed up, it is a fairly strait disc. Its stability is great for a little bit of wind and also for fore-handing. It is definitely a slot that Trilogy was lacking for a little while, but now they have some very good options in the strait/stable control driver slot: Culverin, Convict, Longbowman, Saint Pro etc.

I would definitely recommend checking out the Culverin if you have been looking for a Trilogy disc that is a stable control. It's versatile and feels great in the hand.

I purchased the culverin because I found it at a great price not really believing that it could/would supplant my GL Saint Pro. It became a staple for me after the first round, it is simply more consistent and reliable for me on drives where I would like moderate fade or when I am driving into headwinds. I can throw 350-380 when the stars align but pretty much EVERY drive with the culverin is 320+ which is great compared to my predator/saint pro etc. The wing is not so wide as to give my short fingers any issues when gripping, in fact it feels like a streamlined rival in my hands which I really like. This will be the first disc I will have extra's of in my bag just in case. Can't say enough about this disc, if you're looking for an O/S Fairway that is consistent and has great controllable distance this is it.

Opto 171. This disc is exactly as advertised, a more overstable saint pro. Note that I have only thrown a saint pro around 20 times but can tell that it will finish with a harder hzyer. For me, it is used for shots that are around 300 and I need to finish left. More overstable then my convict. Also can release flat to anny and get more distance up to 350. Picked one of these up local on a friday, threw it a few times friday, played with it on saturday and while letting some other players play through it vanished from the fairway.

Based on this short ownership, I found it good enough to warrant immediate replacement with another yellow/orange 168 gram culverin.

Flies much like my trusty teebird, a touch more fade at the end. It stables out with a nice fade on a flat release, but it doesn't have enough stability to want to right itself when placed on an anhyzer angle. From the little time I spent with this disc, I think it will be a very workable driver for short technical courses.

The Culverin is what a lot of Trilogy fans have been waiting for, and that is a less stable Felon. DD tried with the Convict, but Convicts ended up not having enough High Speed Stability (HSS.) The Culverin is more stable than Convicts, and more stable than Saint Pros. They are not quite as stable as a beat in Felon, but have significantly more glide than any Felon. The rim width is 20 mm which is the same as Felons and Escapes, so that trio of fairway drivers will has me all set. Very comfortable rim and only slightly domey above the wing, then pretty flat across the flight plate. I was giving them about 80-90% in a very strong headwind (20 kts) and it was only turning a tiny bit and coming back for a perfectly straight overall flight. Culverins are trustworty stable in practically all winds. Reports of people flipping these in tailwinds make no sense to me, unless they're Lizotte or have serious form issues. As others have said, these things bomb and can reach distance driver distances on a flex line. This is truly a home run disc from Latitude, and will make its way into almost any bag for those who try them. For reference, I throw a 172g Opto and have about 380-400 feet of power depending. If you have 400 feet + go with a heavier one. If you're a beginner, use these as your OS fairway driver. Well done Latitude, well done.

This disc is an instant classic! Don't let the speed rating of 9 fool you, this thing bombs! On top of this, I find myself pleasantly suprised by the little bits of turn I get out of the disc when released right. I currently bag 2 of these discs, one in 173g and another in 170g, and both fly very similar, straight (maybe with turn if released shoulder height and anny) and the perfect amount of fade at the end. This disc replaced my Thunderbird as soon as I threw it the first time.

I would suggest this disc to anyone who wants a higher rimmed, extremely easy to control driver. The fade might be a bit too much for lower speed arms at first, but as this disc beats in it is proving to be a little more forgiving.

As described. Fantastic fairway driver. This disc will be a powerful addition to the Latitude 64 lineup. In the Culverin you're getting an extremely useful disc that can handle a good snap from a forehand as well as a strong backhand. Very comfortable in the hand. Easy to get some good distance from it as well. I'd liken the Culverin to Innova's Thunderbird.

I am excited about the Culverin, and I am excited to throw it not in the snow. It feels very comfortable in my hand, and I think it will fit the spot in the trilogy lineup to compare with the Thunderbird. I found it to be a little more overstable than the Convict. Again, I look forward to trying it out in different conditions.

I was excited to try out the Culverin, as I've always been a fan of Latitude 64's discs.  Right off the bat you can feel it's over-stability.  It's fairly similar to a Thunderbird, in my opinion.  I'm a fan of the Optop plastic, and the rim felt very comfortable in my hand.  It held straight for a little bit, before fading off left pretty hard.  The 5 glide did show through though, causing it to stretch it's fade further. In fact I hit my friends car with one of my throws, so 5 stars to the Culverin for not leaving a scratch!

But in all seriousness, this is a great disc for those stretching overstable shots you need to make.  It'll be a welcome addiction to the bag for those shots that are too far for my Buzzz OS.  In my opinion, the flight ratings they gave it are very accurate!
