When I first tried this disc, I wasn't a fan. I thought it dropped too quickly and was finicky. But I decided to keep at it because I liked the hand feel (a lot of 12 speed discs are too shallow or the rim is too wide) and now I love it. With the right technique this disc bombs, and it doesn't require too much effort. It can also hold a very long, beautiful turn, which helps to avoid throwing power forehands. I also have a brand new domey sword that is plenty stable for more reliability. A favorite max distance driver for me

All amateur players are looking for that Destroyer flight they see the pros get. To that end, most amateurs won't get that flight with a Destroyer. Therefore, you see a lot of reviewers calling so and so disc the "People's Destroyer." It's cliched at this point, but the Sword really does fit that bill for players with <400 feet of power. Once beat-in even a little bit, this disc will turn a bit and glide for days before fading back. However, just like with Destroyers, the plastic matters. A VIP will start somewhat stable and get reasonably flippy for max distance. The VIP-X Swords, however, start out much more stable and will handle wind better. Having the same mold in different plastics is a great way to feel confident with your shot selection and confidence breeds good shots.

For a long time the Sword was my max distance driver as an intermediate player. It's slightly more understable than the numbers tell you and also seems to glide for a bit longer...the disc would consistently push 15-25 feet further than I thought it would when I walked up to the disc after a drive. I love the VIP plastic; it's a bit gummier than Innova Champion plastic which helps with my grip on drives. Handles the wind very well and is a reliable driver with a lot of versatility.

Love this in vip moonshine. My primary neutral distance driver. Primarily flick player. Effortless distance. Can be thrown flat for long distance and fade at end or can be throw with slight anny knowing it will with back. Great distance tunnel shot disc.

This is my go to backhand distance driver. That being said it's much flippier than the numbers would suggest. Which makes it almost useless to forehand. Either way it's a great distance driver for those with average arms that want to still be able to watch beautiful hyzer flips.

The three star rating is because this disc doesn't really line up with the flight numbers, at least in my experience. It is significantly more understable than the flight ratings would suggest. Mine is 172g in VIP.

With that being said, it fills the understable driver slot quite well. Thrown hard and flat with a touch of height, it will turn all the way to ground and still get out to 320 feet or so. It will level out at the end a bit and not cut roll, which is the most important thing for me with understable discs.  It can hyzer flip very well for dead straight shots with a tight s-curve and fade at the end, but there are other discs I would consider to be better for this type of shot that don't require as much angle manipulation. Something the Sword does very well is when given more power/less angle on the hyzer you can "roll" it all the way over the top into a turning finish and push the turning portion of flight out a lot further. Great for longer right-going dog legs.

I don't pull this out of the bag a lot, but when I need a long turnover type shot off the tee, this fits the bill very nicely. There are other discs that do this but I feel no pressing need to test out other options, the Sword fits this slot with no problems. It also would be a good first high-speed driver for newer players with less power.

    READ THIS REVIEW:

The Sword is an interesting disc, but it's also my favorite driver by far. There are many different plastic types, and I have thrown the three most popular. To preface this, I throw about 360-380ft RHBH.

    • VIP AIR: Very under stable, basically a roller for my power. Better for slower arm speeds
    • VIP: My favorite and go to plastic. A little bit under stable, flies like it has -1 or -2 turn, with reliable gentle fade. This plastic will turn super hard in headwind.
    • VIP X: This plastic is very true to its numbers. It will fly straight with basically no turn, and fade reliably. This is the disc I throw into headwind.

I bag both a VIP and VIP X Sword. I use the VIP sword on almost every tee shot over 300ft. I switch to the VIP X if there is a headwind, or I need more fade. All in all, the sword is my go to driver. I get the most distance, and it feels amazing in the hand. I highly recommend one for everybody.

I found an unmarked 160g VIP Sword on a course about a year ago. I throw lighter distance drivers anyway because of my weak arm (300ft or so), so it's a good fit for me. I have to agree with the folks saying this disc is not as stable (or fast) as its flight numbers.

I know a lighter disc will fly a bit differently, but I would still say it flies more like an 11, 5, -1, 1.5 as it holds those slight anhyzer angles much longer than I originally expected.

Knowing how it flies, I really like this disc a lot, but I wouldn't blame anyone who was disappointed in it based on it's printed flight numbers.

I bought one directly from Dynamic Discs website. Maybe I got a bad copy. This is flippiest thing I've ever thrown. It's completely useless. I throw 350-400 bh. I threw it on a hyzer, it hyzer flipped into a roller. I guess if you want a hyzer flip roller, this is your disc.

Not my primary driver because of hand feel, but so far my farthest drive. Hit 512ft with a long understable flight and faded back hard into a side skip. I normally use this for 300ft understable sidearm as I prefer to throw that flat vs. anhyzer. Fights the wind well.

An under stable form of the sword that flies an accurate S-line for those tight lines in the woods.

Update - A Year Later: I use to think the Sword was too understable though I used it often. Now that my release angles are more consistent I find this disc flies straight when thrown correctly but also has an easily manipulated flight. A slight bit of anny will give this disc a long curving shot. I went from using this disc often to not bagging it at all, back to it being my staple off-the-tee disc once my releases became more reliable.

I had one in the Hybrid plastic which was my dream disc. I found it to have a touch more stability, but that one was lost and never returned. VIP plastic is the most readily available plastic and has good grip and is durable.

In summary, the Sword is a disc I can trust to go strait with very minimal fade. The lack of fade is perfect for those long strait shots but will punish you if you turn it over by accident. Being a lefty, I often need a drive that will finish softly without a hard fade (rhbh course design bias). The Sword is that disc for me.

I would give this disc 5/5 if it weren't for the inaccurate flight numbers.  I bought this disc to be my slightly overstable fast driver, with hopes of beating it into straight and eventually flippy.  My very first throw was into a 5-7mph headwind, and I watched in amazement as it turned and burned fairly quickly.  The sword, however, really shines in a tailwind, producing a very nice s-flight.

Overall I do like this disc and will put it into my bag, it just doesn't serve the purpose for which I purchased it.  I can hyzer-flip this one out to around 375-385 pretty consistently.  It just can't handle a headwind.

A newish VIP Sword flies like a well beat in Wraith or perhaps a Trespass that has lost a little overstability. Like the Gateway Apex, some Westside Swords are straight with a significant fade and some are a little less stable (which are both useful). Swords are a top contender in my bag for a spot that sometimes contains a beat in Wraith, a used Trespass, or a Gateway Apex (all great options).  Swords can be consistent distance drivers in low wind conditions, and stable Swords can be fairly reliable in pretty significant headwinds with the correct amount of hyzer.  Swords are great discs for advanced amateurs or intermediate amateurs.

The flight numbers are so wrong on mine.  I found this disc, but it did not feel super beat up, but it is just flippy for me.  This disc is good if you need hyzerflips, but I use a ballista for that shot.  For a while this disc worked well for me on a slight hyzer, but I outgrew it.  I think this disc is good for players still working on their drives.

I am really glad I gave this disc a try.  I don't usually BH anything higher than a speed 9, but with Westside discs traditionally being more understable than the numbers suggest, I thought I'd give this a try.
I really like this for a BH driver.  Thrown flat or a slight hyzer, the Sword will ride straight for a long time before finishing with a good, forward fade.  This really shines with a slight headwind, where I'd normally throw an overstable disc in the 8 or 9 speed range.  Those discs would fight the wind, but ultimately not go as far as I needed them.  Enter the Sword, it will fight that wind but still get down the fairway. I feel like it is easier to throw this, than to try and overpower a slower speed disc.

As a FH disc, this just doesn't handle the torque very well and just turns over for me unless I take a lot off it.  It really excels for me as a great BH disc that can reach 300-350.

Like other reviewers, you shouldn't throw this unless you have a decent arm.  But don't be afraid of the speed.  If you are throwing speed 9 discs well, grab a Sword, you won't regret it.

This disc was my first “big boy” premium plastic distance driver, and I am so grateful for starting off with this disc. It’s stability fits right in the middle, in that it isn’t so overstable that it’s unusable, but it isn’t by any means understable and will get away from you. Most of the throws I remember having with this disc early on are distance frozen rope/laser shots. The rim size is very comfortable in the hand, and I rarely had a misrelesae with this disc. When this disc beats in, it becomes an amazing hyzerflip machine. It has a lot of glide, and will carry forever with whatever line you put it on. It isn’t the best for headwinds, and would suggest paring it with a more stable disc for a good distance driver combo. Go pick one up and check it out yourself!

The Sword is a very good, somewhat underrated driver from Westside. I guess the disc I'd most compare it to is the DD Trespass. The Sword is a speed 12 driver with great glide and a little high speed turn. Thrown hard and flat it'll soar on long, majestic S curves easily. At speed 12 the rim isn't uncomfortably wide, though it is fairly deep. The Sword isn't what I'd call a really "zippy" driver, but flies in a more deliberate, controlled manner. I can't compare the Sword to a star Destroyer. Destroyers tend to be more overstable and not glide as well as the Sword does.

The Sword would be a great disc for guys who throw 350' or more and want to flex their drives out for a little extra yardage. Its fairly easy to throw and doesn't take a huge arm to keep on a long, flat line. In all honesty, I'd recommend the Sword over any of Westside's other long distance drivers. Its the most consistent driver they make and will go a long, long way when thrown properly.

For a speed 12 driver the Sword is sneaky long. It works well on flat releases and hyzer flips. The disc is a tad bit more understable than the numbers indicate. I won't call it flippy, but the Sword will turn and burn if you get overly assertive with it.

I bought this disc at a shop near me with different flight numbers than what infinite has posted. The version I bought had 0 high speed turn and 4 or 5 fade. As such a high speed disc, it should have been a complete meathook for me. It was not. The first hole I threw it on is a 90 degree turn to the left after 150' or so. I threw it flat, expecting it to start it's fade immediately, but it went completely straight for about 300', then faded. I tried using it as a hyzer-flip disc or turnover but everything I wanted to do, it was just too flippy for me.

One of my go to distance drivers. The numbers on the disc are entirely accurate. Straight for a couple hundred feet, then a nice easy fade of 2.

Only time this disc even turns in the slightest is with headwind, even then it holds up pretty good. So I wouldn't agree with this having a -.5 on turn. Otherwise,  awesome disc for the experienced player. Not for beginners.

This disc is excellent for wide open fairways. Bite down on this disc, throw it up in the air and far to the left of your target (rhbh), and watch this disc sail on a massive flex route. You'll be able to get huge distance from this disc. I just ordered another, b/c I accidentally overshot a basket, and it skipped far out into the lake.

I have been throwing VIP Swords for the past couple of years, and it is the most reliable distance driver I have thrown, They are true to their flight numbers when new, and when they have been seasoned they turn and fade very softly; very straight/stable and predictable for a high speed driver. I throw this mold both forehand and backhand with equal success. If you prefer a smaller rim the VIP Boatman offers near identical performance.

If the Escape was a distance driver, it would be a Sword. Stable, but not very overstable, and so workable for a wide variety of lines which it will just hold with ease. Can throttle down a touch and fly decently, but not much. Can be over-ripped into a harder turnover, if for some reason you feel like throwing that fast. Not a great disc against the wind, but that is to be expected. Overall, a nice, versatile distance driver without large lateral space requirements.

How can you not love the sword! nice feeling mold, good name, flies great.  new its pretty stable with little to no turn and beat in you start to get a nice smooth controlled turn for max distance. Depending on how big your arm is you may need to put it a little more on a hyzer flip.  the 2 fade is legitimate 2 opposed to the sorcerer that is more like a 1 fade. soft fade but enough to pull back smoothly toward your target. Because i have two similar distance drivers(similar not the same) that i do like better, the sword comes in and out of the bag. It depends on the course im going to play.  If you like VIP and Tournament plastic this is the max distance disc for you

I currently bag a 172g VIP Sword and absolutely love it. It is one of my go-to discs for distance. The Sword is a great neutral disc; it is "shape-able", has good glide, and a comfortable rim.

When I first got the Sword, it was a fairly strait disc (at 4,500 feet). Now after having it for almost a year, and leaving it in a pond for about 2 months, it has a great amount of turn. It isn't great in the wind, but in still conditions it has a little bit of turn which is great for hyzer flips, turnovers, and even some rollers.

It fits in between my Frost Bolt and Frost Havoc; in VIP the Sword actually flies pretty similar to my Frost Havoc (Frost definitely being the most stable plastic for those molds). I would definitely recommend giving the Sword a try. It is a solid disc for distance, and great for all sorts of throws/lines.

This disc has a couple of uses for me. Depending on the plastic, it can vary from stable to understable. I use the VIP for the stability factor. It is a great long distance driver with no wind or a slower tail wind. It will get a little bit of turn and predictable fade. My tournament plastic Sword however is extremely flippy. I use it for a roller in most cases. I rate this disc as 3 stars because of the variation in flight path I have experienced,

I have been working "up" to a sword in my head, but honestly, I should have started with is sooner! This is my go to max distance driver. With a nice straight release, it will flip a bit, hold and sail with a fade at the end. I use this for downhill distance, wind shots where the northman would be flipped over, and any max distance shot. Certain courses this never leaves the bag, some its all I use. If you are ready to step your game up to higher speed drivers, this is a great place to start. If you are an intermediate or up player, this disc will BOMB...VIP plastic is more stable than the flippier TP.

The Swords numbers are not quite what they seem. As a matter of fact, I bought the Sword knowing that it would be less stable than suggested, which is just the way it goes for Westside. This fills the understable/neutral bomber slot. It flies as far or farther than any disc I own, and Ricky Wysocki would agree (he stated it was the longest disc in his bag.) This disc is "stable" at most, especially in Tournament (which becomes flippy.) It has such a neutral flight path, I honestly havent seen much else like it. Small amount of turn, small amount of fade, way down the fairway. Its incredible. If not for VIP, the disc gets flippy quick. My 170 Tournament is hyzer flip to flat, and maybe a touch of turn kinda disc. These discs are LONG. My use for them? Hyzerflips where Im trying to hit 400 feet. They're tougher for me to flip in VIP, but thats fine. Im still working on it. So if you crush discs, pick up VIP and flip them, if your more around 330-350 feet, get Tournament in lighter weight and throw them flat. Also, it should be clear that if you release these with anhyzer, it will hold that line all the way. Every intermediate player needs to try this disc, you'll be impressed.

Love this disc. I throw iit RHFH for long distance drives and get about 350' on a good drive. Only disc I can throw as far is a new Vibram Medium Lace, but after the Lace breaks in (after a short time) it becomes very  unstable and is hard to be consistant with. The Sword has been very consistant for me and flies awesome low level line drives. It usually skips and gives extra distance on the fade.

What can I say about the sword? These are amazing discs. In tournament plastic they fly with a small amount of high speed turn and then fade out dependably. VIP is a bit more overstable, so they compliment each other very nicely. I use these for all my drives where I need good control as well as distance. All out distance I still use a Legacy Rampage. All in all these are great discs, but I wouldn't recommend them into strong headwinds.

I have a 168 Sword in the VIP plastic. This disc does not have a 0, 2 rating for me. I don't know if it's because of the light weight or that it was broke in when I got it. Anyways, on a hyzer release, this disc holds that line. On a flat release, this disc stays dead straight and flies super far! On an anhyzer release, this disc holds the turn all the way and doesn't come out of it. My Sword seems to be more like a -1.5 turn with maybe 0.5 fade.
