    GStar Details

GStar is a fantastic ultra premium plastic blend by Innova. The plastic offers a unique metallic shine that not only looks good, but it is also incredibly grippy and flexible (you can literally fold a GStar disc). The Whale is actually in my bag despite the 3 stars because it's great at one thing:  short range forehands.  It has just enough stability to be what I need for those forehand approach shots on a variety of angles.  I give it 3 stars because it is not great for putting at all and I don't care for it as a throwing putter either.

The whale is a beaded putter that has decent fade and works well as a driving putter. I personally don't like the feel of them for putting. The nose seems to protrude from the disc and creates an uncomfortable feel for putting. That said I love this disc for drives. It holds up well and tends to stay on a solid line the whole way.  In the Gstar plastic and particularly like it for winter when I need to get up and down reliably. Overall a great disc and would make a solid mold in anyone's bag.

I received the whale as a gift. Before this disc, I had given up on throwing putters. I was more accurate putting with a midrange disc. The whale is dead strait. My putting game has become exponentially better after I started using the whale. I even drive with it now for shots between 150-200 feet.

    Plastic: G-Star F2

    Weight: 174g

Feel: The Whale, as the name may imply, is quite a beefy feeling putter.  G-Star plastic both helps and hurts the feel and flight of this disc.  The way it hurts will be discussed later, but the feel is improved because the softer, more malleable plastic helps you to really dig into and hold this putter in your hand firmly even though it's quite deep.

Flight: The flight of this disc, in G-Star plastic at least, is noticeably more understable than the numbers say.  Although this is usually true for G-Star, I feel like takes away what the Whale is supposed to be.  Mine is also a little beat-in, but I just can't trust this disc as much as some others. Although, I will give the disc credit for being a good, mostly controllable FH approach disc, but not the best.

Conclusion: While I haven't tried the Whale in other plastics, with my experience using G-Star, I can't really say this disc will ever be in my bag.  I have plenty of other putters to use if I want a very controllable stable-OS shot.

Sidenote: Another positive of G-Star though, is that it remains quite malleable in colder weather.

This is the only putter I have ever held that is great for everything. It feels awesome for forehand and backhand. No other putter feels as good for forehand. It is my go to for any approach, putter drive, or anhyzer. The gstar (after being broken in a little) feels like a softer putter-like plastic, but is durable like star is.

bought this disc to test the FH throws and from other reviews it says it is flip resistant but the one ive been throwing flips like crazy. its also pretty deep on the edges which makes it a little harder to get a good grip into. i bought it for experimental use and it hasnt gone well but maybe with some work i will figure it out.

I hate to say it, I like this disc better than my aviar! Straight flight on approach with a subtle fade. It performs extremely well in all but the heaviest wind, otherwise the effects are nominal. Don't be shy with this disc! It drops quickly at the end of a putt, but it is very straight, so feel free to go for the basket! I am a fan of the beaded rim! Good feel means good control. Another disc I feel should be in everyone's bag!

I needed a driving putter for tunnel shots so this review is for that purpose. My Innova Colts, even in Star plastic, were proving too understable to handle anything near a full power forehand (which I throw, mostly) release. After asking around for recommendations, I settled on a GStar Whale at 175g. It's a distinctive disc, for a few reasons. First, GStar has a very different feel than Innova's other plastics. I'm slowly getting used to it after a shaky first impression. My only point of comparison was Discraft's FLX plastic, which I bag with my Buzzz. FLX feels 'droopier' in the hand, but GStar feels somehow less substantial and I can fold it in half easily. It does grip well. The alternative was XT plastic, which has a great chalky feel, but tends to warp over time with driving use in my experience with the Colts. I've already hit trees with this Whale and in my judgment, this thing won't warp at all although time will tell. Second, this disc is deep, giving it a feel that's almost like an ultimate rather than a golf disc. My hands are average sized so this too is an adjustment. I was concerned that the Whale might catch upon release, but it doesn't. Third, and this is what appeals to me most, the Whale has very little late fade for a disc that is surprisingly resistant, although not immune, to turning over (unlike my Colts). With a very slight hyzer release, this thing flips up and flies straight as an arrow for the full extent of its flight. Finally, it lands more softly than even a typical putter. On the inevitable tree hits too, it doesn't ping far. My alternative was to buy a more traditional, overstable putter, but so far I am pleased with this less conventional choice for these straight drives. I can't comment on the Whale for putting, but if I were to use it I would certainly get an XT plastic version and avoid driving with it.

The first putter I ever felt confident with. I got a dx whale from a local retailer about a month into playing disc golf. I had been using a 175g dx aviar before this. The whale funtions like an aviar that glides a little more and is more friendly for anhyzer putts. It goes straight with a gentle fade, and anhyzers as much as you put on it. This is my favorite putter for days with minimal wind, windy I go more OS. Just picked up a Gstar version 175g and use it for most non windy putts. Only downside is I do not like the dx versions, they beat in and get really understable. Gstar or plastic other than dx would be best.
