Disc: DX Color Glow RocX3 - 180g
Feel: The DX Color Glow RocX3 dimensions feel a lot like a premium plastic Roc3 and lining them up side by side they look very similar caused by the DX plastic shrinking a bit more. The orange color glow DX plastic feels like standard DX and the glow is average. The flat top makes it easy to grip backhand but the forehand grips can be affected by the bead.
Flight: Thrown flat and with appropriate mid range power, the color glow DX RocX3 flies fast & straight with a lower glide and an abrupt fade to the ground with a little ground skip. For me, this gives it a distance potential between 240' and 280'. Headwind or overpowered throws produce some turn with the fade bringing the flight back to straight ahead if left with enough air space. Thrown forehand, the RocX3's given flight numbers may lead a user to expecting the softer hyzer releases to dump more but they tend towards standing up to flat and produce less than expected fade. The over stability doesn't really correct off axis torque wobble as much as some other discs.
Mid range drivers take a bit of a beating in the woods so the over stable flight characteristics with a DX plastic changed fairly quickly after some nicks and tree hits.
Impressions & Comparisons: The RocX3 mold is intended to be a lower glide, harder fading Roc3 that holds up in windier conditions. I found it excelled at hyzer approaches and better ranged drives off the tee than the Roc3 which tends to glide past the target landing zones. Comparing it with other midranges in the same over stable -> very over stable range:
- Millennium Quantum Taurus (slower speed, similar glide, more fade)
- Millennium Quantum Sentinel (more glide, more fade)
- Innova Champion Gator flat top Ring of Gators (less glide, more fade)
- Innova Champion Roc3 (more glide, less fade)
- Innova DX/KC Pro Roc (slower speed, similar glide, more fade)
- Hyzerbomb Recon Mortar (less glide, more fade)
The DX molded version flies pretty similar to the Champion Roc3, capable of handling a slight hyzer release flipping to flat and fading back slightly on line drive shots. The plastic will wear in further so it may become less reliable in the wind and become less versatile which will cause me to cycle it out of the bag. The DX plastic is nice to play with in the colder weather with better grip but the orange color has been difficult to locate in the Fall/Winter months when leaves are on the ground.
