Solid disc. Bagged for awhile. Ultimately got replaced by the force as felt it was a little less dumpy and more of the longer firebird I was looking for.

This disc is not for everyone and probably won't be used every round. My favorite use is throwing it on a big, high forehand anhyzer over trees. It also can be great for doglegs.

I think the ape is a bit of an odd disc, forgotten in the innova lineup. It's a super wide rim that boasts an overstable flight, but not quite utility overstable. It suffers from being inconsistently overstable from disc to disc, and there are other options that are much more comfortable in the hand. I prefer discs like the MVP Energy, Latitude Stiletto in the hand.

This is a meat hook of a disc. it is great to keep in the bag as a utility disc for windy or other particular situations. I can crank on it and it always fades back very reliably without hyzering right out of the hand.

I love this disc. This was the first driver I ever bought from my local shop. I had no idea what the hell I was buying or what the fancy numbers meant. It said speed 13 and I thought "disc fast, disc good". I yoinked the star Ape for 18 dollars and went to the course only to find out that I couldn't use the thing. I gave up a few times and practiced my forearm with a few other discs and kept coming back to it because I didn't have the kind of money to spend for more drivers. Due time I evolved into a full fledged Ape thrower with a good ol' forearm. Or I threw it at enough trees to make it work right. Either way, I love the damn thing.

Generally this is too much disc for me as I still max out at about 300 ft on a Beast RHBH. But this disc finds it way in and out of my bag as an overhead disc. I can still outdrive my BH or FH with my Thumbers so overhead is still a key shot for me (working on BHs though). .

While I would prefer a Flick for Thumbers, the Ape is a solid backup. I usually end up bagging one if have lost my Flick (or playing a course where a loss is likely).

Will occasionally use for a hard cutting dog-leg hole (backhand or forehand) where my lack of speed becomes an asset, getting this disc to fade hard and quick.

This disc will require some arm speed no matter what kind of throw you have. Even overheads require some good power to get the pan left then pan right going without it dropping from the sky

This disc has lots of sentimental value to me because it was my first disc golf disc ever. Once I started learning how to throw it more than 100 feet, I found that it was great for spike hyzers and skip shots around corners. That being said, it is extremely overstable and very fast, two things which don’t go well together if you don’t have a lot of arm speed, so avoid this disc if you can’t throw 400 feet or so. There’s not really anything bad about this disc (it does exactly what it is advertised to do) but its audience is reduced to more advanced players.

This disc is very very overstable. Now that we have gotten the obvious out of the way, let's talk about how it flies. I have this in champion at 168 grams and it is still overstable, even for a lighter weight disc. I usually throw this on a flick shot and that's where it excels because of its overstability for me, especially in a headwind. When backhanded, it feels like a meathook. When I try to throw this on a flex shot on either forehand or backhand, the disc fights out relatively quickly and finishes quickly as well. The best distance with this disc will definitely be with a flex shot and it's not even close. When thrown on a hyzer or flat shot, this disc definitely is consistent and does pretty much the same thing. When thrown on anhyzer or flex shots, the disc fights out and produces a consistent result. It is a good distance flick shot for me when thrown with flex but it's really a utility disc for me because I never really use it other than situations that require a hard shot thrown into a headwind. I would not recommend a beginner to throw this disc because it reallly excels when thrown with a high arm speed.

Are you King Kong? Oh, mate, you'll love this disc. You can really bomb this thing! I bet you could take out some of those pesky bi-planes with this monster. It starts fading early, regardless of power, though, so be spot on with that release angle, you darn dirty ape. If you are not King Kong, please read the description Innova and Infinite have provided. Truth be told, its not personally a favorite of mine but I'm trying to make up for all of the reviewers who claim to have the power of a demi-God but whine that "Its just too overstable:(". Yawn. If you can't get what you want out of this disc, and make sure you're sitting down, it's not for you. If you did, you wouldn't have trouble and you've got a great headwind or blind finish driver.

    PROS: Perfect situational distance driver.

CONS: Requires chimp-brain and body to achieve its full potential.

I have been using the same champion Ape for several years now and it is very easy to control with forearm throws. Its made of very durable plastic and I love the glide and turn I can get with it. The only reason Im giving it a 4/5 instead of a 5/5 is because its not beginner friendly and should only be used for forearm drives.

The definition of beef when it comes to drivers. I feel that this could be such a good disc...but this thing just doesn't feel good in my hand at all! I have other overstable drivers that can definitely do the job, and can get much farther. If they found a way to fix this rim so that it doesn't feel like I'm throwing a thick well-done steak, I will give it another try. I try to give every disc a chance but it's just so hard to throw it well.

My max-weight Champion Ape is one of my favorite discs and I've had the same one in the bag for years now. Don't be fooled by the speed flight number, this disc will not go very far for most players. The extreme overstability means you would need top level arm speed in order to use this as an every-hole distance driver. The Ape makes for a great utility disc. It will literally never go right (RHBH) meaning you can trust it for escape shots and count a reliable skip. I like to use it for my overhead and forehand shots or especially in the wind. When thrown backhand, I view it more as a fairway driver used for shorter spike hyzer approaches. I would say the Ape is a good disc and does well in a certain slot, but isn't a great disc and I wouldn't recommend for newer players still working on their form. Additionally, it has a very wide rim, which I don't mind, but can be uncomfortably bulky depending on personal preferences.

At full weight Champion, its GREAT for short and mid range 90 degree shots, low or high, especially in headwinds where a Roc wont fade.  It also skips, nice for low shots around trees near basket.  100% predictable.

At Blizzard weight, (I throw a 146)  it cuts through the heaviest headwind, and weirdly sails downwind really well.

Also A very good thumber disc, but the rim is wide.  A 175g Is a good choice to power through vegetation and leaves when going overhead in the jungle.

Underrated as a mid range sort of "Monster Roc".

The Ape is a specialty disc. It is an extremely good disc when you need a reliable and sharp fade (especially against a headwind). It also has the capability of producing a solid skip if thrown properly. In general, the reviewers who have rated the disc poorly do not understand that this is a specialty disc (oppose to a primary driver) or do not have the arm strength to get the desired flight path from the Ape. This is not a beginner's disc but instead is geared toward upper intermediate/advanced players. Since the Innova Monster is no longer in production, the Ape has become my go-to hard fade disc.

This is a very gimmicky disc. Innova advertises long distance record numbers on this disc in the past, like if you get this disc so can you, when in reality hardly anyone has the arm for this disc. It does have one purpose though, no matter how you throw it, it will fade out hard and give you some skip if thrown correctly. Its not a bad disc, it just has a very limited use and there are much more practical options than this.

    -It'll go left.*

"But I threw it on anhyzer."

    -It'll go left.

"But I have a really strong arm!"

    -It'll go left.

No matter who you are, no matter how hard you throw, the Ape is going to end left. If you are turning this disc over, you have issues with your form since even the pro's can't do it. Personally, I think you are looking for an overstable driver it's a better idea to use an Innova XCaliber instead. At least with the XCal, you can get a little turn before a hard fade. The Ape does not go anywhere except a little straight, and then left.

*Disclaimer: Left for a Righthand, Backhand player.

I'm a beginning, BUT, I love this disc for ONE type of shot.  A friend turned me onto it for forehand fades.  I'm primarily RHBH for distance (~350ish on a good throw) but I get a heavier model Ape for predictable forehand hyzer shots at mid distance (250-300) where I need a skip, which is quite frequently. With a low ceiling it can still skip (more than any other disc in my back) and add another 20-50 ft to a shot. This disc in champion plastic has flown very predictably for me.  Can't do anything with it backhand though, except maybe spike hyzers for short distance.

The Ape is Innova's fastest overstable driver. It combines that overstability with good glide to produce a disc that is actually surprisingly long for such a beefy driver. This thing flies like an XCaliber, but noticeably faster. Both will remain on a flat line for most of the flight before fading out hard. A beat up Ape might show a little high speed turn, but a new one won't.

This is NOT a disc for light throwers or beginners. It isn't the most overstable driver on the market, but its also very unforgiving on short throws or misfires. The Ape works well for very hard backhands or forehands. To flatten the Ape out for any length of time you'll need at least 400' distance consistently.

I love the Ape, and recommend it to anyone who wants a very reliable, long overstable driver. Great for headwinds or other drives where you absolutely don't want your shot turning over. This disc will reach out and touch distances that a Firebird can't get to, but on the same lines.

If you want a disc to fill the slot for distance forehand flex shots, look no further. This thing is massively overstable, so getting an Ape anywhere near max weight will be simply impossible to keep turned over, period. However, I found myself using this disc for forced turnover shots with my (albeit less than fantastic) forehand. It may be a niche disc, but I consider it one worth bagging.

Feel: This disc is the definition of thick rim. disc is tall, which in addition to the 13 speed makes the rim incredibly large. there is quite a bit of dome on my ape, which makes it feel like it is absolutely made to be ripped on.

Flight: I'm not gonna lie to you, I got this disc because it looked awesome. And it turns out, I will probably never throw hard enough to really use this disc. I mean, this thing is so beefy. Think fast Xcal. This disc is great for big hyzers, the speed lets it get into the air pretty high, and still push forward quite a bit. other than that, you would literally have to be a gorilla to get a max weight ape to do anything else for you.

Comparison: The flight of this disc is slightly faster and slightly more stable than the Xcaliber. I have a champion katana that feels identical to my ape, but I think there is something fishy there because Katanas aren't ultra overstable.

I bought a max weight Champion Ape to try out, and it was not a disc for me. This disc is very overstable and if you can't get this up to speed it is going to be a useless disc for most. I am not much of a forehand player, but I could see where the Ape may be good for that purpose. Outside of utility/trick type shots, this was not a disc for me.

This is an amazing disc for stronger arms that need to get some distance on a steep angled hyzer and for bending around things - in heavier weights, it will ALWAYS come back (and doesn't stay turned over for long).  There are always a couple of times during a round when it's the only disc that will do the job well.

    175g Champion Ape

Amazing forehand disc, out of the box it is insanely overstable but in a good way, once broken in a bit this things gets some life and will go super far. ultra reliable in heavy winds, it cuts through headwinds like a heated butter knife if you can keep proper nose angle. you will also produce some of the gnarliest skips imaginable as well as some beautiful forced over anhyzer lines, such a big fan of this disc. definitely not for beginning arm speeds but work with it, the beef is strong with this one...

    175g Champion Ape

Great forehand disc for reliable distance and consistent shot placement. It basically flies like a fresh Firebird except it goes a bit little farther and skips a lot more often after hitting the ground. The overstable nature of the disc makes it really hard to mess up on a forehand throw so long as you put enough power into it. It's never going to turn over on you, so you can just smash it out there and give it some height, and you'll always know roughly where it's going to end up. Really nothing to complain about here. For a forehand dominant player, this disc will be a very comfortable disc to throw so long as you don't mind the wide rim.

For backhand, the disc is way too overstable for real distance shots. You can probably throw a Leopard further than a Champion Ape on a backhand throw, just because the disc fights to the ground so fast that it doesn't glide at all. Maybe some SERIOUS power throwers could use this as a backhand distance driver, but for 99% of players out there this will fill more of a utility role when thrown backhand. You can throw a super high spike hyzer and the disc will come down on its left side, so that you get no skip or roll at all. You can also throw it into a stiff headwind without worrying about it turning over. While it's a much less versatile disc for backhand, it still has a role to fill, so you really can't call it a bad disc even for a player who doesn't throw forehand at all.

Overall this is a great disc, and everyone should have something in their bag to fill this slot. The real question is just whether you want to use this or something else from another company such as a Stiletto, Warhorse, or Nuke OS. My opinion is that the Ape is the best option for this slot just because Innova's Champion plastic holds onto its stability for longer than similar plastics from other companies. Get a max weight Ape in Champion plastic and it will stay beefy for a long time.

This is my go to disc for windy days and for some crazy skip shots. I would not recommend this disc to any beginning player because how much fade the disc has. Once the players begins to throw a little harder with correct form it will the right time for the Ape. The champion plastic has been very durable and continues to do the job after 2 years of hitting trees.

I play RHFH with a big arm and this is one of the few drivers I've used that's stable enough to not get flippy for me.  A flat release goes dead straight, with less glide, followed by a big fade.  I can't shape shots with a hyzer release with this disc to nearly the same degree that I can with my similarly rated Dynamic Defender, the Defender has a very strong and consistent return to level flight and the Ape seems a little bit more understable and I can't get the same consistency out of it.

    I like it, I don't love it.

My Favorite Distance Driver!  I primarily only RHFH this disc, 175g.  You don't have to have a super power arm to throw this disc, just technic, but it doesn't hurt to have that power.  If you DO have the power behind your throw, then you can really bomb this thing.  So predictable you might find yourself having to have one.  I have to ALWAYS have one in my bag.  I throw it RHBH on downhill helix shots because I can put everything into it and it'll always come back.  I don't care about what kind of wind is going on when I grab this disc because it does what I want every time.  Brand new champ 175g you better throw it with authority with like a 2 o'clock anhyzer on that flick or else it's fading out quick and you're in the cabbage.  Throw it into some trees or something, throw it up and let it come down and smack the concrete, throw it at your car.  No don't.  You could do the drier method, but I never tried it.  When it beats in it'll hold that glide for a bit before fading, and it becomes very very predictable.  I used to throw the Nuke, but it can't handle the power like the Ape can and come back.  I never tried to the Nuke OS.  Once I moved to the Ape, I was hooked.  The Lat 64 Gladiator is just like the Ape to me, but with a .5 more glide I would say.  So the Gladiator is ALWAYS in my Lat 64 bag.  I'm the only one in my circle of people actually bag this disc.  I've met only one other fellow so far that bags this disc and he knows what's up.  Plan for that skip, throw it with authority, and beat that bad boy in, and you'll have a true friend in your disc golf bag.

On a side note, I just picked up a Blizzard Ape 150g out of curiosity.  It's not an Ape.  I don't know what it is just yet, but it's definitely not an Ape.  Too understable, but I like the rim, maybe more than the Blizzard Destroyer but the jury is still out on that one. I need to play with it more.  I'm thinking a good skip/trick disc.  I bet I could get that thing to go super straight with like a decent fade and gigantic skip lol.  I also have a Champ 170g Ape coming because I've only ever thrown 175g.  I imagine I'll get more distance, but us disc golfer junkies gotta try everything and anything am I right?

I live in a very windy area, so throwing into a 20+ MPH wind at a 400 ft hole, this is the disc I grab.  It is an absolute meathook, but it fights the tough wind well.  I am a RHFH thrower and even into a stiff wind I can put everything into my throw and it will fade hard at the end, just have to keep the nose down.

The Ape is crazy overstable and a great go to disc when you need a big spike hyzer or something that will take a huge skip. It has a fair amount of glide which is nice, some of the slower overstable discs tend to have very little glide and it can kill the flight of some of the discs, so I liked having this in the bag to help, especially when I had a good tailwind. It is no long in my bag as I have switched to Trilogy discs, but it is a great one to have, and I would say it is pretty comparable to the Enforcer from Dynamic Discs, which is a great overstable driver. If you need something even beefier, try to go with a metal flake champion, they are great discs.

This is a meat hook for anything but big arm power throwers that need a hard fading finish and no turn or a disc to trust on a windy day.

I like to use this for max power forehands that I can trust to not turn over.  I also flex these on windy days for a good S curve flight when I can't trust my other drivers.  This disc is also great to get a huge skip around a corner.  It's a great fast utility disc for specific shots or when you need an overstable thumber or tomahawk.

I compare the max weight Champion Ape's to a more neutral PD2. They won't fight out of a turn nearly as fast as C-line PD2's do, yet they feel remarkably similiar in the hand. All of the Champion Ape's I've thrown also have an incredibly low, flat profile (FAF as some would say) which makes them feel really comfortable in the hand when thrown sidearm. Ultimately, they fit right between a Destroyer and PD2 for me, which are they two best offerings from the Innova family in my humble opinion.

I had this disc when I first started playing, I got it because I liked the boss so then I knew I would also like the ape, even though the ape is more overstable then the boss. I usually threw the ape sidearm with some tilt on the disc so it would s curve and it would fly forever. I would recommend this disc for anyone who throws sidearm and has a lot of power.

I really only ever throw this disc forehand. This disc I can put an anhyzer on it and have it come back with a huge S curve. With that this disc will sail forever and will still give you a consistant finish.

Very very early in my disc golfing days, I witnessed a guy bomb a forehand with a disc. I approached and asked what he had thrown on that particular hole. He replied "an Ape". Naturally I went and picked up an Ape because I wanted to throw like him. I had only been playing for a few months at the time.

I tried throwing it and I felt like I could barely get 100ft out of it before it crashed to the ground. As I improved, I'd still try to throw it backhand, noticed a slight increase in distance, but it was WAY too much of a disc for me.

Fast forward to years later. The stamp is almost worn off my Ape because it's so beat in and it's still too much for me to throw backhand. However, I learned to throw forehand and I enjoy the Ape for these throws. For my style, I need a wide-rimmed overstable driver. I like to throw my forehands flat, straight, and with predicable fade. The Ape is just that. I probably don't get the max distance out of the Ape with my forehands, but I know exactly where they are going. It's a toss up between the Ape and Boss as my go to forehands.

The Ape is awesome. Very overstable! It is a little too fast for my liking, but if I ever need something in a crazy headwind, the Ape is what I go to. I haven't used one as such in a while, but the Ape was my favorite forehand disc for almost 2 years.

This disc is a very hard disc to predict... At least for me!...sometimes it give me the right straight line and great fade out ....but sometimes this guy tends to hook hard right and flip ..grts a great roll  just not towards the basket..lol.. I got a get this disc down all more and probably become my next roller disc.....

Let me start by saying that the Ape was too much disc for me.  Throwing RHFH, i was not able to produce much distance before the disc faded HARD and crashed to the ground.  I was getting less distance than my fairways with this disc when flicked.  Even when throwing with extreme anny angles i was not seeing much distance.  Now I dont have a huge arm, but can throw a max weight Nuke fairly well for distance so I have experience with speed 13 discs.  However, the Ape was too beefy for me to use properly.

The reason I am giving it 3 stars is that i could throw tomahawks very well with this disc.  They simply went farther than with any of the other discs i have tried to tommy with, and flew violently.  If i hit smaller branches with a tommy using the Ape, they would punch through almost everytime.  The ape could make a good utility driver or is better suited to those of us with big power throws...I will probably sell mine though.

I am a predominately RHFH player and have a pretty good drive forehand, with that said I am always looking for a super OS driver for days with a slight wind or on a regular day that I need a disc to be reliable. The Ape is it and my 175g champion Ape is perfect for that spot. I bought the ape after loosing my max weight Nuke OS and the ape has slightly more glide which I love for days with no wind and it doesn't affect the flight too much on days with wind. On a full power blast it can reach 400', but if you have a slight head wind thrown flat it will have some highspeed turn and can reach 425' for me. I know thats crazy that it does better in a head wind but its the truth. Love this disc and will be a go-to disc for a long time for me.

I got a max weight Champion Ape a while ago when I was still relatively new to disc golf. I got it only to be used in strong wind and at the time it worked ok, but faded too early (as expected with a super overstable disc). I kind of forgot about it for a while and just recently cam back to throwing it again. My form must be improving because now this disc is a lot more useful to me. I find that I get really decent distance throwing it on an anny line. Even if my anhyzer angle isn't perfect I can always count on my Ape to come back and produce a predictable S. Very useful when navigating obstacles through smallish windows once you figure out how to throw it. And of course, it does a great job when I use it for hyzer bombs. Nice skip at the end, too...

Great disc, I don't have the arm for a heavy champion ape, I throw forehand, so this fits a niche for me to be able to go around and over obstacle. Nice long flight, but you have to have good form to throw it properly, definitely not for beginners. Blizzard plastic I'm not fond of I played with the disc once and it has more wear than all of my others discs that have been used 10-15 times this year. They are a mix of champion and dx materials.

It took me a long time to warm up to my Ape, but now that I have, it has a permanent place in my bag. I've got a 175g Champion Ape. At first I used this disc primarily as a utility driver, meaning it only came out of my bag on very windy days or when I felt I needed a really aggressive fade, which it works beautifully for both. But after a while as I developed my power and form I started to work on "flex"ing this disc out. I would throw this disc on a slight anhyzer line (RHBH) and with enough power it would hold that anhyzer line for a bit then fade very predictably. I won an intermediate division distance contest flexing out my Ape like that, felt good. Also this disc is a great disc for forehand throws as well, as long as you can throw it a bit on an anhyzer line (otherwise it will dive hard) you can get great distance with it too. Last thing I'll say about the Ape is that it is a wide rim driver that needs a lot of power to get good results. I would not recommend this driver for beginners. However once you get the hang of it, you can get great skip shots, consistent flex shots or awesome spike hyzer lines.

I bought a Champion Ape. It was good to throw hyzer around trees and level out but as a beginner I couldn't do much with driving. It feels comfortable but it will fade hard right. It's very fast and aggressive. A good intermediate to professional disc. If you're beginning, stay away otherwise you will get frustrated.

Currently I have a 175g Champion Ape in my bag. And I WILL replace it if anything happens to it. I'm an experienced player and use this only for its huge fade. Great disc for when you are looking for a big half moon rhbh shot.

I found one of these a few months ago and decided to try it out. Being a backhand thrower, I couldn't get this thing to work at all. It would fade way too hard way too soon. I'm sure it's a great disc when you have the arm to throw it, but this one is definitely not for me. The rim also seemed a little fat, and caused me to hold on to it for a split second too long, many times.

I can bomb this disc, and I am not a "reliable" 400' thrower. In truth, I usually average about 315-330'. Rarely am I throwing very "hard" however, preferring accuracy over a few extra meters of distance. The Ape is one of the few discs I have found that I can throw as hard as I possibly can, and it will not turn over. I can reach out to 350'-400'(rhbh) with this disc when user error does not hinder it. It is also an exceptional disc when facing a headwind. Id rank it right up there with the sharp edged Destroyer for into wind shots.

I like really overstable discs but the Ape is just too much for me. The rim is too thick and it is too domey for forehand shots for my liking. For backhand throws I can get more distance with midrange discs than I can get with this driver. When I attempt to throw the Ape it fades so hard it's unreal. This is definitely a disc designed for the advanced player.
