The Dynamic Discs Sheriff was one of the most hyped releases of 2017 and like others I was pretty excited to get a hold of one. The Sheriff has a big beefy rim that feels quite large in the hand but definitely in that speed 13 range. It is relatively easy to grip both forehand and backhand and after a little bit of practice it will feel natural to you. I've tested this disc in both Biofuzion and Lucid (sparkle lucid) weights between 170-175g. The Profiles for me generally speaking were pretty Domey when close to max weight and the 170g Bio's I had were just a little flatter and significantly flippier.
The Sheriff is designed to go far, it has a noticeable turn and a small fade which nets you a pretty long and straight flight reminiscent of a very flippy of destroyer or a faster Wraith but with less fade. It's glide is superb like most of the Triology plastics and this disc likes to stay in the air. Due to this slight understability it is actually pretty workable even without a huge arm as I've had my friends who don't quite reach 400ft throw it and the disc still holds a reasonable line for them without too much fade. What this disc does well is hyzer flip max distance and long annhyzers, you can put it on a long slow fading hyzer line but you need to have the shot dialed perfectly to avoid flipping over. Once this disc breaks in the flip becomes pretty pronounced with some fine tuning can go very far. The downside to this is that because the disc can get a bit flippy and it doesn't have a strong fade it can be unpredictable especially in conditions with wind (outside of a tailwind maybe). Sidearm this disc will handle some torque but most likely will be reserved to hyzer flips or anhyzer turning shots.
As far as performance in the wind goes this disc will laugh at tailwinds but keep it far, far away from a headwind or crosswind as it can easily be upset and go off line. With some more stability this disc could be more versatile but as it stands read the wind well and temper your expectations.
Beginners shouldn't throw max distance drivers.... 'nuff said. But really, the Sheriffs big rim favors fast throws and while its kinda workable I wouldn't consider touching this guy until you crack the 350ft barrier reliably.
Did the Sheriff live up to the hype? I think it did.... however, the hype did not pitch how situational this disc would be and I think it is worth noting that while at first you may feel this disc is amazing and want it to be your go to it is NOT reliable enough of a workhorse to truly take molds out of your bag the Sheriff just is not stable enough (and I've thrown supposedly the most overstable variant being a domey max weight sparkle lucid). So in the end we end up with a disc kind of like the Discmania DDx, a strange inbetweener niche disc that absolutely bombs but isn't flippy enough out of the box to be a roller. When you need an absolute bomb for that 500+ slight downhill tailwind shot the Sheriff won't disappoint but I can't see a good reason to bag more than one and ultimately for me just did not stay in the bag as I was able to more reliably work some slower more stable discs to the same distances with better wind fighting capabilities. Accordingly a 3/5 Stars showcases this disc well, a solid choice for a niche spot but maybe not the workhorse we truly wanted it to be. If DD/Lat64 can bridge the gap between this and a Defender they may truly have the greatest distance driver of all time.
