    Ground Plastic Details

Viking Ground plastic has been designed to offer excellent grip in hot, cold, and even rainy weather conditions. This plastic grade is flexible and sticky compared with the other Viking plastic blends. Discs in ground plastic seem to have more glide and quickly break in to give you a straighter flight over time.

I call this "The best disc you've never heard of"

You need to know what this disc is and what it is not before using it- and because Viking is not that wll known (which is a shame- because I believe they are on the same level as discmania, trilogy, mvp/axiom etc). I think a lot of people leaving negative comments are trying to use the disc for the wrong shots.  It IS NOT a throw  putter.  It IS NOT an overstable approach disc.  It IS an EXTREMELY OVERSTABLE APPROACH DISC.  It would be comparable to an Innova Pig or a Discraft Zone.  If your a beginner or even an intermediate player, this will be the most overstable disc you have in your bag that is not a driver. Knowing that, beginners should understand that managing that type of fade is difficult to do.  You're not going to be able to control the disc perfectly on your first round- however- that is why I recommend this as a beginner disc- this disc is perfect to use to learn those difficult shots. This disc is going to fade- and fade hard regarless of the angle of release. This disc's shape makes it comfortable for both forehand and backhand shots, and the design makes it a good tomohawk and even a good roller disc-  all of those are approach shot variations you need in your tool belt to manage around trees and other obstacles, and you can do all those with this 1 disc!  Additionally, the disc holds its flight characteristics extremely well- making it very reliable even as the disc beats in.

This disc is crazy overstable. I use it as a FH approach shot. Even when thrown with big anhyzer, it wants to dump immediately. Predictable flight every time, but don't expect to ever throw it farther than like 175. It's what I imagine the Tilt is like, just less exaggerated.

This is a review for the Viking Discs Loki in Ground Plastic.

This is my ultimate upshot utility disc. It's an extremely shallow, beaded midrange/approach disc that only wants to get stable and find the ground. Thrown flat, forehand or backhand, it will glide forward and due straight with some rise and then dump pretty aggressively at the ground. The Ground plastic is perfectly tacky and minimizes skip. I've never had this disc catch edge and roll away, either. Tends to give a mild skip (maybe 5 feet) due to its energy coming down, and then settles flat.

For those who are apprehensive about having a beaded midrange/approach disc, I can tell you that this disc has about the same depth as a 6 or 7 speed fairway driver, with the bead taking a decent portion of that depth. I primarily use this disc for forehand approaches and not once have I misreleased this, it comes out really smooth. I am 100% on team no-bead for forehand discs, with the lone exception being this disc. It really is that smooth and that comfortable.

For Discmaniacs, this flies like the Mutant. I think the Mutant goes a bit further straight, and its flight is more gradual hyzer. The Loki flies straight and dumps at the end. The Mutant sort of carries a hyzer that gets more aggressive as it finds the ground. Not to mention the Mutant is physically taller disc with a sharper bead.

For Discraft fans, this is more overstable than a run-of-the-mill Zone. Not sure about those Get Freaky Zones. The Loki flies faster with less glide than the Zone. The Zone flies more like a putter with more glide.

For Innova throwers, this is a little beefier than a R-Pro Pig. The Loki is faster but also has less glide. Also a much more shallow disc overall. Pigs, like the Mutant, seem to hold a hyzer line out of the box compared to the straight-then-dump flight of a Loki.

Just note that Ground plastic will warp in the flight plate near the rim after some hard impacts. I haven't noticed any difference in flight as a result, but it does look a little funny staring down the front of it. It's not enough of a deterrent for me to knock off a star. For the compromise of minimizing skips and keeping grip in wet conditions, I'll take a goofy looking beat up disc.

If you want a dirt-cheap overstable approach disc that's just a little different than what everyone else has, this is the disc for you.

    Meat...Hook....

This disc is not for every shot but it is definitely a staple in your bag once you have a decent foundation in disc golf.  This particularly helps with forehand shots between 100-200 ft.  It's very reliable and fairly impossible to turn over.  The reason I prefer this disc over some of the other overstable approach discs ( like tactic or tilt) is because of the ground play after the shot.  Unless on an extreme hyzer, when this lands you usually get a monster skip.  Personally, I have come so close that I wouldn't be surprised if my next ace comes with this disc.
Overall, this disc is great at doing what it was designed for.  With that said, I have mixed feelings about the plastic.  I like the grip and feel of the ground plastic but it will waffle pretty quick.  It doesn't tear up on the ground so much but the occasional impact on a tree will    warp a bit.  Then again...for $8...it's not a huge deal.

The Loki is probably Viking Discs signature mold, fitting into the ever growing in popularity super overstable slot that has been commanding so much attention lately. There were original trailblazers in this game, with the MOAB from Hyzerbomb and more recent additions like the highly anticipated Tilit by Discmania. Having said all that, I have thrown my fair share of overstable monsters and this is by far the most reliable of the lot. Not most reliable in so far as what it's going to do, but how often it will do it. The Innova Viper was the first real monster I threw, and I tried to compare it to other discs with similar statistics. Along with the two I mentioned previously I also tried out the Dynamic Justice. As my potential escape discs, I quickly learned one unavoidable truth. The fact of the matter is that you don't necessarily know how any of these discs are going to behave in what seemed like the same conditions. Around the same time I found Viking discs I was intrigued by their 'utility putter'. I bought this disc and never looked back. The disc will always do the same thing, no matter where you are and it will ignore whatever wind, or water you face. In the storm plastic, the disc is almost invincible, and will not flip. No, seriously. It won't flip. I do love it for that. In the ground plastic, as it is for this review, I don't know if it will yet. I will say this, the Loki is well suited to durable plastic. The orange Ground plastic is okay enough right now, but enough hyzer spikes and max power drives as well as putts into a headwind will really start to take their toll on the disc. Until then, I have a perfect scrambling record if this disc is involved. I don't need to be in a rough spot and have a disc I can't trust at the same time. So, if you would like a highly stable utility disc, this is your mold. Look no further.

PROS: Extreme reliability, you won't get any variety of flightpath.

CONS: Likely not the best Viking disc to get in the Ground plastic. Splurge and get you a utility wingman that will last you your career.

this is my jammmmm from about 100ft in now. i love the hard, and i mean, hard fade. i know its gonna go no further than about 100ft on a controlled upshot to i aim about 30ft to the right, launch it, and i can trust it to just crasssshhh right next to the basket.

it is also super helpful for holes with OB up the left side. i throw a forehand hard anny, and this disc will always come out the anny and shoot to the right. i can work this line up to about 180 feet comfortably.

I don't understand why Viking Discs isn't a household name yet. I have thrown up-and-coming brands before that don't quite make the cut as far as quality and consistency among the other big manufacturers, but Viking Discs, is not that! This brand is legit! I have thrown 8 different molds by Viking Discs and I would recommend all of them to anyone! Their plastics feel great, and the flights are amazing as well. Not to mention the sick stamps on every disc! Do yourself a favor and try some Viking Discs!

Now... on to the Loki. Beef Beef Beef! Moo freaking Moo! This thing is crazy overstable. This is not a putting putter! It feels more like a mid in the hand than a putter. I guess that's why it is stamped as a "utility putter". That is definitely what the Loki is! If you are looking for a putting putter... click away from this disc and go check out the Rune and Knife from Viking Discs. If you want a throwing putter that is going to fade fade fade for you... you have came to the right place! I would say this is one of the most overstable throwing putters on the market! Grab a Loki if you need something that has no chance of turning. My crew and I reviewed this disc in the Ground plastic which is great for if you want it to grab the ground and stick, but I would LOVE to try this thing out in a premium plastic as I feel like it would be great for short skip shots and meathook lines. Viking Discs did a great job matching the market with a crazy overstable throwing putter and even beating quite a few of the top manufactures in overstability. Pick one of these up for sure! The wind doesn't stand a chance! Check out my crew's full review of the Loki here...
