    Disc - 175 ESP Surge

Feel - The surge has a great feel in the hand especially for those with a bit smaller hands. It has a fairly small rim and you can find them with domes and or flat versions. If you are a player with small hands, a bit less arm speed, or want something that is a bit more controllable in the woods or even in the open, the surge could be a great driver for you.

Flight - In my opinion, the surge is discrafts attempt at the wraith. It is a bit flippier than a wraith, but feels a bit better in the hand in my opinion. I have always been a fan of slower distance drivers because they are a bit easier to control and I do not have the highest arm speed at all. This disc is not just for amateurs though as Chandler Fry has released it as his tour series disc for 2022. I think many people could benefit from trying out the surge but they are a bit difficult to find at times.

Overall - I think the surge is a great distance driver that does not get nearly enough shine and I think its a great driver for players that want to throw a bit more smoothly in the woods.

ESP Surge - I was expecting this disc to be somewhat like a Wraith due to the flight numbers, but there is some noticeable difference between the two. Surge is more understable and had a noticeable amount of turn, but it's not too much. You can get good straight hyzer-flip shots or longer turnovers with this disc out of the box. It is touchier than some of the more stable distance drivers (like Wraith) so ripping it with full power may not be ideal, but it's still very workable as a disc.

I wasn't getting the distance out of this that I was expecting of an 11-speed, but that just may be a symptom of me rather than the disc. Still, I'd rate it as slight more flippy and less fadey than the og flight numbers

The ESP Surge is my favorite disc. It is best compared to a Destroyer with a slightly slower speed (11), but they have very similar flight paths. I use the Surge rhfh and rhbh with consistent lines. I can get a nice flex on fh with a slight anhyzer release that carves through gaps around trees. It's also the only mold that I can throw a tomahawk with and know that it will always flip upside-down and sit when it lands. I was very happy to see this new release in ESP.

I've been throwing the Surge since it first came out and now 14 years later, I still think it is one of the best distance drivers on the market. While the reviewers here on Infinite have figured this out, the disc golf world as a whole has seem to forgotten about this great disc in their never ending quest for finding the magic speed 12/13 bullet that they'll never be able to really handle. The vast majority of players would do themselves a great service in dialing back a bit to a speed 11 disc like this or the Wraith and watch their scores drop. In ESP plastic, I would say the Surge is quite similar to a Star Wraith but seems to eek out a bit more glide. I carry both a 1st run ESP and a Z since the added stability in Z allows me to have a Surge for both headwinds and calm/tailwinds.

Due to being in and out of the game the last few years, my 1st run is still in great condition but at this point I'm so afraid to lose it that I started looking for a replacement, and was disappointed to see that Discraft no longer regularly produces these in ESP plastic. Obviously, I was stoked to see these new ESP Swirlys show up here and now I'm patiently waiting for the disc to arrive in the mail so I can test it out. Assuming it flies anything like my other Surges, I'm sure I'll add a few more to my stock.

Wow, this disc is amazing. Looks incredible, flies even better. It’s basically a beat in glidier destroyer. The swirls are just stunning. It feels better than any distance driver I’ve ever felt. Right out of the box it out drove my beat in Opto Glaladiator and my beat in S-Line PD2. Very predictable. So much glide and forward push for an overstable driver. It doesn’t just dump like other distance drivers do, it pushes forward an extra 10 feet if not more. Definitely gonna make this my go to distance driver and once it beats in, it’ll absolutely bomb. For a beginner,  it’ll be a good head wind disc. For me, I’ve been playing for about 3 years and can throw upper 400’s, it’s a super glidey and great overstable bomber.

I love this disc and wish discraft would make it a staple in their lineup again in ESP plastic.  It has very good stability, but still flips up well to get a nice full flight. I currently own 4. Three in ESP and one in Z.  I much prefer the ESP. Its nice and grippy, and has a touch more stability.  The Z is great for flipping to flat for dead straight shots, but it does not feel good to me for forehands. It feels somewhat similar to the Innova star wraith, but a little less stable, and a bit more glide. Great disc and would recomend to anyone looking for a reliable distance driver.

The Surge is one of the first discs I felt ultimate confidence with both FH and BH. It's essentially a slightly slower destroyer (172 ESP for me) and for that reason is just a little more controllable.

Pros: Serious distance, Tight S Curve pattern, Controllable, Great for FH and BH, flips but not too much

Cons: decent in wind, not GREAT. Not stable enough to throw flat FH (for me). Doesn't fly as good at max power, great for 80-85%.

The Surge is an outstanding distance driver from Discraft. The Surges I have thrown all fly consistent to the flight numbers, with a little bit of power when ripped on, and a healthy fade back at the end. I found this disc to be great for flex shots when brand new, and then it seasoned into a disc that can really do it all. This is a great driver to cycle. Beginners will probably not be able to get a true flight from the Surge as it is a pretty stable disc to start.

Fast disc that will glide forever. Forehanded this disc takes off. Has a nice wide rim that is easy to grip. Sharp turn to end the flight consistently.

The Surge is, in my opinion, a slightly underrated disc. It's feel in the hand, variety of plastics, and versatility make it an excellent tool for intermediate arms. This disc's rim is relatively small considering it is a distance driver and will be a boon for those who have smaller hands. It is very easy to grip forehand (assuming you get a flat top one) and has enough beef to take a decent flick.

The Surge has a lot of the traits that I love about another brands mainstay line of distance drivers at an accessible speed. If you have the power this disc will have just a touch of highspeed turn when new breaking in to a nice hyzer flip distance driver and a predictable smooth low speed fade in ESP plastic (the Elite Z is a bit more beefy out of the box).It excels in easy distance potential but the cap on that is relatively low (possibly due to the smaller rim and poor glide) and is the the main ding bringing this down from 4 stars to 3.

This disc handles wind okay, if you happen to come across one that is pretty beefy it will handle a headwind well and on average it has performed reasonably well for me in tailwind situations which is typical behavior for a mainline Distance Driver.

As far as beginner friendly I would say while the Surge is not the hardest disc to throw it will require a good bit of power to get it up to its ideal speed. If you find other speed 11-12 discs too hard to manage the Surge is there to cover that weird transitional zone of 10-11. Because it's cap is relatively low the surge does get brushed under the rug a little as far as higher end intermediate and advanced players will be better served with other drivers. (No pros will bag a distance driver this slow apart from maybe FPO or as a utility disc) A solid 3/5 and worth a try if you found yourself in that weird in between zone.

As much as I love Discraft's Nuke, I'd have to say I love the Surge more. It isn't the fastest or the longest driver Discraft makes anymore, but its probably the best overall. Nice, stable flight and great glide. A little high speed turn and a gentle fade at the end of the flight. I find myself reaching for the Surge for drives that are just below max power level, but still fairly long.

I'll also give the nod to the Surge over the Wraith. They're very similar to each other, but for whatever reason I think the Surge glides better and is a better disc overall.

Most of my copies of this disc are in ESP FLX plastic, which I have a good stock of. Weights range from 160-174 of varying stability.

The first few times I threw this disc, I instantly knew I was throwing something special. Ive been hooked ever since, and they havent left my bag.
Right now I carry 3 in the bag, all within 162-168 in weight. These are my only distance drivers I carry, and I can consistently throw them 375 up to 410+.

    The Grip:
Not a wide rim by any means, not sharp, and not curved or scalloped. This is my ideal shape of a rim, which most Discraft discs have. Level edge on the bottom of the wing, pretty level on top. It fits comfortably and give you enough room to vary grip if need be.
Same thing applies to forehand shots.
Also I dont have big fingers by any means, so having a comfortable distance driver in my hand is just as important as its flight.

    The Flight:
Granted there will be some variation all dependent upon PLH and dome. Overall these the Surge gets the proper balance of turn and fade.
These easily get up to speed and are fairly easy to tap into without a huge throwing arm.
Flat out of the hand it on RHBH it gets right midway through flight and then starts coming back just left of your point of release.
Hyzerflip it for a dead straight line and a nice fade, even a little skip.
Mash it on a steep hyzer release and watch it come almost flat, and hook back considerably.
Throw them on a big sky anhyzer for an incredibly long flight. that flattens out and drops.
The glide is great on the Surge. Really pushes it down the fairway.
The fade does the job perfectly. I do have really flat ones that are very OS, and can handle flex shots and spike hyzers.

    Pros:
    - Extremely comfortable distance driver, Not too deep or shallow, not very wide.
    - Great glide to help get you max distance out of your shot.
    - Very workable turn as well as fade, this thing can shape long shots with ease and precision.
    - Handles mild winds
    - Comes in a variety of weights and plastics.

    Cons:
    - Generally not a strong headwind fighter
    - Not the fastest discs on the market (but who really cares??)

    Overall:

This has been my most reliable distance driver for quite some time, I cycle through them depending on conditions and seasons, but there is never a time where they arent in my bag. I hope Discraft starts putting these out in Z FLX that way I dont have to keep hoarding ESP FLX ones.

The surge is a great disc i used to throw nothing but tomahawks and it would sail farther than almost all my discs and drop perfect. When i started throwing rhbh consistently this became my go to driver. I could get 250+ almost every drive. The flight on this disc is very straight with a little fade right at the end. I would recommend this to anybody with a decent arm.

I have a 163 gram ESP Surge.  When I throw it hard and flat rhbh it turns a little and has a healthy fade at the end.  Thrown hard and flat rhfh it turns quite a bit more and fades back to slightly left of my initial release point.  I use it for backhand distance throws where I need more fade at the end or as a headwind driver.  I use it for forehand throws where I want a little more understability than my main forehand distance driver has (156 gram westside world vip air).  Dependable disc.

The surge was one of my first discs, and I think is a great starter disc if you can get it up to speed. Its not easily turned over which is good for a begining still learning. There is a large fade at the end and works for good overstable shots. Great overall disc.

A Nice driver. For me lately it's been flying fairly understable but not a cut and die, more of a long hold. It almost always finishes stable for me though. I have 2 ESP 170+ discs. I would recommend this disc for intermediate players as an all around driver for many situations as you can hyzer it, anhyzer it or keep it low and straight. (very similar to an Innova Wraith)

Discraft Esp Surge. Holy mother I love this disc for drives. If you're looking for a stable driver that will take a touch of anhyzer, slowly flip back and glide for days, look no further. I like it in a 172 weight - it doesn't take a huge arm to get it humming and I almost never overthrow it. I recently started throwing forehand for every possible shot, in order to develop my fledgling flick and this disc was key. In just a few days of field work I was able to get my flick out 300' with this disc, about 5' off the ground the entire way... dead straight until the last fade. Great plastic, no signs of abuse even though I've hit every tree imaginable.

I recently decided that I need to stick to one or two disc molds. After lots of driving today, the Surge is my best driver! I love every shot I can throw with my Surges: s curve flicks, low and straight flicks, backhand drives into the wind, and long hyzers. I recommend the Surge to anyone looking to improve their game with a very controllable and fast driver.

I have a domey 171 ESP Surge. It's not my longest disc in the bag, but it is fairly easy to control and comfortable to throw. I found this disc and started using it after I threw my Star Wraith in a lake. Thankfully somebody had done their research before they lost this Surge because ESP seems to be the most preferred version of plastic for this disc. They're pretty comparable to Wraiths. I personally prefer ESP plastic durability to Star. It's a good disc for intermediate and advanced players alike; however, I would recommend beginners work their way up to this disc.

I have a 174g ESP Surge. I bought this disc as I was trying out a few new drivers to work into my bag and it fit in quite nicely until I started to increase my power. As has been stated before this disc is a great driver for beginner to intermediate players that are looking for some distance without too much power. The rim is wide but not crazy wide and the ESP plastic feels nice and grippy in the hands.

When I first bought this disc I was able to throw it (RHBH) and have do a nice little S turn but the fade at the end was not very aggressive, it would just kind of come back. However, having worked on my form a lot and gaining much more power I have a hard time getting this disc to come out of its turn, it will usually just glide from left to right and hardly come out if at all. I know I could power it down a bit but there are just other discs that I feel are more consistent for me in my game right now. The Wraith is similar but slightly more consistent for me. I would recommend this disc to those starting out or people who know what their doing but don't have tons of power.

I have a 170g in ESP. I traded for this one, and it is relatively beat in, so I have no experience with a new Surge. I was torn between trying a Wraith or the Surge as they get compared to each other often, but I am very happy with my choice! My Surge goes very straight on a RHBH throw. There is only a little bit of fade at the end, just enough to depend on. This disc will hold a line very well, it shapes like a faster midrange in my opinion. I know that sounds weird for a speed 11 driver, but it is a very predictable, easy to aim disc on all lines. It will ride a mean hyzer line, or keep it low and it will stay straight, and it even will allow some anny shots. Crank it up and it makes a subtle, predictable s-curve. Mine doesn't seem to have a lot of glide, which I think helps it be so predictable. So far I throw this 300-315ft.

I haven't tried any other plastics with the Surge, but I recommend ESP plastic because it feels amazing and still has high speed stability.

Everyone has that one disc that they absolutely love, whether it's a putter, mid, fairway or driver. The surge however.... Is mine! There is no disc that I feel more comfortable with in my bag. This thing is everything I want in a driver. New ones are overstable, broken in ones are a little bit flippy, and beat in ones are really flippy. I prefer the ESP, but I do own a Z as well. I carry 5 in my bag. 1 173g Z for wind fighting and hyzers, 1 164g slightly broken in ESP for bombs, 1 173g new ESP as a back-up, 1 173g really beat up NateDoss ESP for my long turnovers, rollers, long anhyzers, and upshots, and finally my 173g mildly beat in ESP for all drives that need to be straight or even slight turnover. I can't stress enough, how much I love this disc. I own 8 of em, 5 are in the bag, 3 are waiting for a place in my bag. I will get another Z one soon so I can have a back up Z.

The Surge is a workhorse. This disc is accurate, consistent, and works well for both forehand and backhand throws. I've used Surges in both Z and ESP plastics. Like ESP the best. This is a great everything driver for intermediate disc golfers.

The Surge is a solid moderate speed distance driver similar to the Innova Wraith. I like the Surge better than the Wraith. They both have very similar flight patterns. It seems to me that the Surge has a little less Fade.
