Lots to talk about with this one! My review will be of the 179-gram platinum series. I will start with the look, then the feel, and finally the flight.
First of all, this disc is downright GORGEOUS. I haven't tried the platinum series yet, and boy was I missing out. The plastic is actually pretty similar to Innova's G-star plastic. It is very flexy and bendable. The name is hard to say to I nicknamed mine Neptune because it looks like the planet. It has this beautiful tree ring-like circle pattern on it. It's one of those discs that you have to see to know how truly pretty it is.
Every RPM disc is extremely unique. Every single one is a total mold breaker. No companies molds feel anything like these. The only disc I have felt that is similar is DGA's tremor. The disc has a slight dome and a small, somewhat shallow rim. this part is sort of hard to describe. Most mids have a very thick rim/edge, while the piwa has a thinner rim/edge. Fun fact: it is very hard to write your name on the rim because it changes slope halfway. It does feel very good in the hand, almost like a fairway driver.
Flight: I was expecting this to fly like my mako3, having very similar numbers. As the flight pattern shown by inbounds it is more understable than the numbers tell. I rate it at a 6 speed because it is pretty fast for a mid. Its sorta like one of those Discraft hybrid mid-ranges. It is also very glidey. The first time I threw it, I gave it probably about 50% and it just sailed forever. The turn and fade here are a little tricky. The turn is probably around -2.3 and the fade is somewhere around 1.3. It will turn over if you give it more than 50% (I throw around 430 at max to give you a range), but it won't turn and burn. It's really actually pretty interesting. A signature shot with it is a little hyzer and let it do that glidey turn that won't fade until almost the very end of its flight. Great for those tunnel shots that turn slightly right and you don't feel comfortable throwing forehand or a powerful backhand.
Overall: A great compliment to the Mako3. the mako will go straight forever, but will sometimes hyzer out if not given enough. The Piwa solves that problem. You can throw it and know it's not going to hyzer out (unless its a shank). Once again, RPM has delivered an amazing mold with beautiful artwork and flight. Beginners should most definitely get this disc. It is a perfect disc to get for a beginner. Its got all the right numbers. I would recommend this or a Mako3, or both because they are both fantastic. I've said it before and I'll say it again. RPM is one of the best companies out there. People just need to try one of their discs. I tried the Kea at first and it's still one of my favorite discs in my bag. Can't say enough great things about RPM and this disc so I might be needing a sponsorship soon because they are that quality.
