    GStar Details

GStar is a fantastic ultra premium plastic blend by Innova. The plastic offers a unique metallic shine that not only looks good, but it is also incredibly grippy and flexible (you can literally fold a GStar disc). This plastic blend is especially recommended for playing disc golf when it's cold outside.

Great straight flyer, neutral. Modest fade.

A step up from the Leopard, less overstable than some Leopard 3s.

This is the old FD design (ditto for the overpriced Dark Rebel).  In Gstar the disc is outlasting my shimmer C-line FD.

Just a quick update to my previous review.  I don't know if my disc suddenly broke in or if my armspeed suddenly improved, but I'd like to rectify my last review as this disc is flying different since then.

The Hawkeye is pretty much true to numbers, a -1 1, maybe even a -2 1 when compared to other discs labelled as -2 1.  It's the old FD mold from when Innova was making the FD for discmania (note: FD-new is different).

The Hawkeye is a pretty good upgrade to a Leopard (which many of us start out with, eventually wanting to go to the next level).  This, in my humble opinion, is a far better choice than moving to a Leopard3 - it has a more pointed nose (more aerodynamic) and is more controllable and less finicky than a Leopard.

Unlike the Leopard, which will gain in altitude when thrown fast, the Hawkeye will better stay on the level you intended it to go on.  And it really does that nice turn before the fade but without overdoing either one.  It also performs well in a moderate headwind (~20km/h) - doing better than a brand new FD-new which turned over on me today in wind (despite supposed to being more 'stable').

Hawkeye is a very predictable disc; very easy to control, very tolerant of imperfect form.  It's become my favorite fairway driver.  I HIGHLY RECOMMEND, especially in GStar plastic because that has the least expansion/contraction of all their plastics, so as good in cold winter as it is in summer (and yes, I played throughout Canadian winter).  Do not buy if you're a totally new beginner (if that's your case, start with midranges, like a Wombat3, Hex, Tursas, Element, Fuse - later on move up to a Leopard gstar or esp-flx Sting once you're getting better, and later, a Hawkeye as an upgrade to those no less than a year of lots of throwing).

PS: I'm rating it as an 8 speed because the rim is 18mm (hence by definition 8s, not 7) - and 7 arm speed wasn't sufficient to make it do what it is supposed to.

Very nice disc.  I don't have the armspeed of some of these expert reviewers.  I only got it to turn a bit once, to maybe -0.5.  Otherwise, it usually flies pretty straight, before giving a reliable 1+ fade.

Great next step up from a Leopard.

    Nice feel in the hand.

It's got an 18mm rim, so it's an 8speed, not a 7speed!  I can throw 7speed well, but start to struggle at 8, and this really requires an 8 armspeed to get a semblance of it's numbers.  Not sure why it's mislabelled as a 7.

Same disc as the Dark Rebel but less expensive and with a much nicer stamp.

    GStar, 166g

Has some serious turn and glide, and will fly mellow at low power.  Gentle nose-up anhyzer shot pans luxuriously to the right before finally fading, a very useful shot shape when powering-down to hit a gap.

Thrown flat with a 350ish feet of power, my Hawkeye will turn too much to really be useful, and may make for a very good roller disc for those with the shot. I've had success reaching 350+ with the disc, but the throw requires hyzer, height and lots of space to accommodate the dramatic, sweeping flight.

Serves the same purpose to a leopard of similar weight and plastic, but with a very different nose/wing shape, which strikes me as a more "modern" streamlined feel.

Experienced players will probably prefer max weight in a stiffer plastic. At 166g GStar, this flies very much like a starter-pack disc (which I like a lot, but your mileage may vary)
