I absolutely love the Star Aviar3. This disc quickly replaced the Discmania S-Line P2 in my bag. I don't cycle discs out of my bag often so this was a radical change for me, and I haven't gone back yet. For me, the Star Aviar3 is the perfect approach disc, especially for forehands. It can handle a lot of different situations, and the fade is dependable every time. I use this disc for anything inside 125 feet, and love it for utility forehand shots. It is very versatile.
When throwing this disc in the wind, it performs dependably. It doesn't hold it's over-stability in strong headwinds, but the amount of flip that comes with the headwind is always dependable. If I need something to go straight for an approach into a headwind, I go for the Star Aviar3. The low profile flat-top gives it a great wind performance, but the slow speed and putter shape makes it less stable when faced with strong wind. I think it is ideal for breezy conditions when considering the wind.
What I find myself using the Star Aviar3 for the most often is forehand shots. If I need to throw a 40 foot forehand but am in huge trouble in the rough, the Aviar3 is my go-to. Whether that is a high anhyzer or a low, short hyzer, I can always depend on the Aviar 3 to stay on the line I put it on. I have even used it for short rollers, but those aren't my fortè and I can't necessarily recommend them. It is a great forehand utility disc for approaches.
The last thing I use my Aviar3 for is dependable backhand upshots. If I need: A good fade, to hyzer around a tree, or have a moderate wind to take into account, I put away my XT Colt and pick up the Aviar3. I even have found myself trusting the Aviar3 for straight shots over the Colt since it is so dependable that there are no worries of anything crazy happening.
I also find myself using the Aviar3 off the tee as well. Not so much for forehands, but for backhands. If I want the low speed of an Aviar but need to get some distance on the shot, I pick up an Aviar3. Especially if there is a fast green or a small landing zone, I can count on the accuracy of the Aviar3 to be close to my target, and the low speed to minimize action on the green. However, the Star Aviar3 does tend to get a little skip action on slippery/fast greens like hard-pack dirt, so in that case I would use something soft like the XT Colt. But I can count on less action on the green than a midrange such as my Mako3 or McPro Roc3, and the stability of the Aviar3 allows me to power up on it and I can throw it much farther than other putters. On the tee, if I can't decide between a putter and a midrange, the Aviar3 is always a safe bet.
Overall, the Aviar3 is my favorite disc to have come out in 2017. It is more overstable than one would think, but dependable to work through many different conditions. The Aviar3 has helped me greatly improve my ability to forehand with putters and I find myself impressed by my own short game ever since putting one in the bag. The 2 words I describe the Aviar3 with: Versatile and Dependable.
