The Blaze is a very overstable fairway driver. Gateway actually classifies the Blaze as a “fast” midrange disc, but we feel this disc is a little fast for that classification. This disc is great for controlled drives requiring a hard fading finish. The Blaze works well for both forehand and backhand throws, and can handle headwinds.

The Blaze is an overstable fairway driver, or midrange? It feels like a driver, but I really didn't get much of a flight out the disc. It really throws like a brick, no glide, but also not super overstable. Too many good drivers out there, not going to throw this.

Great disc, but Gateway's designation of "fast mid-range" shouldn't be brushed off. Yes, the Blaze has a somewhat tapered profile which is admittedly uncharacteristic of most mid range discs; Gateway's epithet for their Blaze is probably a stretch. However, in my experience and opinion, the Blaze's best role lies in controlled approach. The disc will fly menacingly flat when thrown with power and then, with a predictable fade, arrive accurately where it was thrown. Gateway Disc Sports knows this "fast mid range" should be used as prescribed, and in my opinion, it should be considered almost as if an Emac Truth had morphed into a driver: With strength, it flies for long, straight, accurate lines, and with beginners, it serves as an excellent overstable control driver, as integral a disc as the Teebird.

BEWARE though, that Gateway is starting to produce these in their Evolution Diamond plastic. As pretty as all their evo products are, I've noticed an issue with warped discs, especially in drivers. I was in the shop earlier this week, and picked up a fresh Evo Blaze and was thoroughly disappointed as I have been with some other evolution disc versions; something's not quite right with the hardening of the discs, sometimes giving them inoperable dome's or distorted wings. Hoping it will beat in at some point...

I have been trying out this disc and a Demon, and I like the Demon better. This disc tends to be faster, but on longer shots where that would help me I prefer to power down a fairway driver. I am going to compare them more this weekend with a couple rounds, but the Demon seems to work better for what I need. That said, this is a good overstable disc, and I would recommend trying it to someone thinking of a short overstable fairway driver.
