The Basilisk, by Divergent Discs, is designed to be the first distance driver for beginners. This has an understable release that gently fades back at the end of its flight and is designed for players with a max distance of 200 feet looking to get more.

The Basilisk has a domed profile and flies with exceptional glide. It's a fun, wide-rimmed driver option that doesn't take a high-speed arm to achieve great distance results. Add some extra feet to your driving game with the Basilisk.

Unpredictable. With average arm speed, thrown flat, this thing is a ROLLER. Only useful flight is a hyzer flip, and that's not an easy task. Too fast or flat = flip and roll. Too slow or hyzer = big left turn. Good luck.

I can understand why a lot of people are giving this disc lower ratings.  However, if you are a true beginner and really want to throw a distance driver, this is the one to get!  Don't let the ratings dissuade you.

For fast or even intermediate arm speeds, this disc is going to be super flippy. However, for lower arm speeds this thing is an excellent option! This was the disc that helped me break 250ft for the first time.  About a week after that I couldn't throw anything but rollers with it, but still, it was the only disc I could get that kind of distance with for a while.

I would say this disc is great for anyone averaging in the 150-200ft range. Beginners will grow out of it quickly, but will be very impressed with it while it lasts.  Kids or Seniors with a more "fixed" arm speed would probably also do well with this disc, and might not grow out of it so fast. Divergent also has a selection of other discs that offer excellent value and a great beginner friendly flight. The MaxGrip plastic quality is excellent for the price! It has the feel of a top-quality premium plastic, with maybe a bit less durability. Still, I have really ripped into some trees with this driver and I can say that it is much more durable than base plastic even if it is not quite to the level of a true premium plastic.

In the end, I think all this works out to create a very good beginner friendly disc.  It's just important to know what you're buying!  This won't likely be one to stay in your bag for an extended period of time. For the value though, it still could be a great option!

This is somewhat beginner friendly, but I think it is still a bit fast for some before quickly becoming too understable after improving. The extreme dome does make it feel a little odd.

It is an ok disc for beginners who want to throw drivers, but otherwise it is probably not worth getting unless you want a very understable utility disc (scomahawk disc?).

I bought this disc to see if it will fit in with winter golf. I want very understable and excellent grip for a lot of stand still shots and turning lines. This comes close. The grip is outstanding and is something I would have appreciated when I first started throwing. The dome is a little much, although manageable. My only real gripe is about the durability of the plastic. Hit anything hard, it will crack or chip. I'm sure it's a trade off for excellent grip and a very affordable price. So, beginners, most of you won't be disappointed checking one of these out. Especially for field practice.

This disc came with a mystery box I ordered. By far the most understable disc I've thrown. I would rate this higher, but the plastic is just bad. After hitting a single tree, a gigantic chunk of plastic was knocked out of it, and it never flew the same. Beginner friendly, but inconsistent flight due to the bad plastic.

Got this as part of mystery box. I don't have a high speed arm so this disc works well for me.

Other reviews are correct regarding good for beginners.

This disc is F L I P P Y. I bought a max weight Basilisk out of curiosity, and it is by far the flippiest thing I own. easily flippier than a kon tiki or a paradox. very new beginners can probably do a lot with this disc, but more experienced players will only be able to use it as a roller or very soft straight flight. Great for what it is intended for, just know that this thing will flip no matter how softly you throw it.

This disc is super fast and easy to throw. With very little power this disc can attain full S-curve shots and even rollers with ease. It does have an absurd amount of dome to it which makes it feel a bit different than most other high-speed drivers on the market. It has really good grip and durability.

Pros: Easy to throw for most arm speeds/skill levels, lots of glide to help gain distance

Cons: The dome is a bit much on this disc. it makes it feel a bit uncomfortable in the hand. It is also very touchy if there is any amount of wind present

This disc is all dome. It is a very strange looking and feeling disc, but flies exactly as described RHBH.  Best thrown on a hyzer flip or it will swing way right.  My FH throw i guess has too much power and turns way over to a crappy roller.  Plastic is firm with some grip. Doesn't feel the most durable, but i haven't had it too long.

The Basilisk is just as it says it is, the perfect first distance driver for beginners.

This disc is SOOO understable. I'm no power arm player, but I have been playing disc golf for a decade now and this disc is way too flippy for me unless I throw it really soft, and that is where this disc is so amazing. With a "really soft" throw I can get the Basilisk to get a full S-curve flight path and go 270-280 feet.

This is absolutely perfect for those grandpas out there that can't even throw any disc 200 feet. It flys like a light weight Vibram unLace (for those new to the game, this was the preferred distance driver for weak arm players back in the day).

This is definitely a niche disc, but if 200 feet  of total distance is a good throw for you, try the Basilisk and you'll instantly see substantially more distance.

If you can already throw in the 300 range, skip this disc and find something else more suitable for your arm speed.

    170g, Max Grip

Pretty easy disc to throw with minimal arm speed. Works well for my sidearm, but turns over pretty easily with my much faster backhand.

A bit strange in the hand, but not too hard to get used to.

Throwing at about the same speed, it will turn over less than a DX Dragon, which I would say is the closest comparison

I purchased a few Divergent starter sets with this disc, because I think it will be a good driver for beginners, and one they'll keep for a bit as a turnover disc if/when they move on to more stable distance drivers.

    EDIT:

I've thrown this a little longer now and just don't see a slot for it in my bag. If you want an easy-to-throw understable driver, get a Lat64 Jade in a lighter weight, or a DX Dragon. Those discs will at least have some utility outside of turning and burning.

This disc is comically understable. I am a more intermediate player, so I completely realize that this disc was not designed for me and my arm speed. That said, the disc does not really fit in the hand well, and that makes it uncomfortable. I would say that this disc is going to be a great max-distance disc for really new players, but will gradually become something that even beginners will want to stop throwing.

Throwing Max Grip plastic at 4,400 ft in Utah. To me, 5 stars = incredible disc 4 stars = good & dependable disc. I don't give out too many 5 star ratings.

The Basilisk is a really fun first distance driver. It has a little funky feel in the hand. The rim has pretty typical 12 speed rim width to it. Despite the little funky feel, I got used to it, and got some good throws out of it.

Upon throwing it, I get a pretty solid "S" curve in the air. For most beginners this disc will provide some great distance. It will work well as an all-purpose disc, it can hold hyzer lines and provide some great anhyzer lines as well. I don't see this disc staying in the bag as the player improves and passes the beginner phase.

Overall, I'd recommend this disc to any beginner. It is a fun one to throw around.

So far this is a tough disc for me as a beginner/intermediate player of just about a year. If I put a huge amount of hyzer, this sucker flips like 120 degrees to the anhyzer and will literally become a roller (I think I might have had my furthest throw/roll ever as a result though). I've been able to get it to turn over nicely and fly straighter a couple times, but I'm still trying to figure it out. It came in the new starter pack so not sure if that makes a difference. I like the disc though and am interested in learning more about rolling!
