The Malta, an overstable midrange, is Paul McBeth's 4th disc. The Malta has a strong and controllable flight. It has a similar feel and flight to the Zone, but with the distance and trustworthiness of a Buzzz. The Diameter is slightly bigger than a Zone, but not as wide as a full size wide-diameter midrange.

This is an overstable mid, more so than a Buzzz. I've struggled to be consistent with it.

I'd rate it a 4.5/4/0/2... that said I bag the disc because there is dependable fade and you can work angles on the disc. High speed or low speed, the disc flight numbers don't reflect its actual flight or anything close so hence the 4 star rating.

I honestly picked up a Malta because I thought it was a pretty disc. I was very new to disc golf then and had no clue how flight numbers worked. That was actually an advantage for me because I didn't buy this disc expecting it to conform to its flight numbers. This disc is certainly not nearly as overstable as advertised, but that doesn't mean it's bad by any means.

I throw all of Paul Mcbeth's discs, and I will say that the Malta is the weakest entry in his lineup. If you are looking for a stupidly overstable midrange from Discraft, get a Drone. If you're looking for an overstable yet very workable midrange, the Malta is a good candidate. For me, the Malta flies straight for 2/3 of the flight and then steadily fades left (RHBH). I can put it on a flex line, and it will hold the anhyzer for about half of the flight before slowly flexing out.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend this disc to beginners, but I also don't think this disc would be bad for beginners. It will be a very reliable disc for anyone.

The most inaccurate flight numbers i have seen on a disc. I exspected a very overstable midrange. Instead i got a disc with slight turn and less fade. Maybe it was unlucky. Not a bad disc, but its not as the flight numbers suggest.

Awesome disc! Good overstable mid with a comfortable rim. I've aced with one and hit the basket on several other ace runs. Love it!

I currently have one in my bag but I really don't throw it much because for me it doesn't forehand as good as some of the other overstable mids, and I prefer overstable putters for backhand. The one I got flies close to the numbers, but I would put the turn number at zero instead of one. Not a bad disc at all.

First of all, the flight numbers aren't true. That could be said for a lot of discs but saying the turn on this is a 1 is incorrect.   I would say it's a 0 or -.5.  When I throw this flat it stays dead straight and then has a slight fade at the end. If thrown on a little anny it will hold the line and keep turning. I tried this in a head wind and it flips easy. So you have to be touchy with you release angle.

I got this to be my overstable mid and instead it's more of my straight flier with my buzzz being my turnover.  Currently using a drone for my overstable slot now.  Still a good disc but there's a different option for what I was looking for

This disc is a perfect overstable mid-range that I think the Mutant from DM was trying to imitate and failed. It feels great in the hand (usually not a fan of beaded discs) and flies great for approach forehand and backhand shots.

Downsides - I don't think the turn rating of +1 makes sense, I would put it at 0. Also, this disc will skip and will roll away if it lands on its edge, but put enough turn on it and it will glide down and land flat.

This is my go to utility approach disc when I need something faster and beefier than my Zone.

    It's a Roc3.

Every single company half-heartedly attempts to make a Roc clone. This is a Roc clone, and not a good one. Interesting take with the ESP plastic, but it is just too slick, too small, and it has a weird turn to it where the Roc keeps on a frozen rope. Just get a Roc.

I was looking for a overstable mid when the Malta released and managed to pick up two first run copies. (I haven't thrown the stock runs for comparison.)

I generally don't throw beaded discs - but I've found that the Malta comes out cleanly on a forehand and a backhand. The turn rating of 1 doesn't feel quite right, 0 is closer. This disc is somewhat less torque resistant for me on a forehand, so I understand why some people are expecting it to be more overstable.

A theory: Pro players tend to have better form and generate cleaner spin. Compare that to an amateur like myself who will sometimes throw the disc at an angle that it can't recover from (imagine a RHBH anhyzer release that wasn't given enough height and is about to cut roll left). I believe that this disc behaves more stable commensurate with one's ability to feed it clean spin.

I like this disc a lot as my overstable midrange, complimenting a Meteor and a stack of Truths.

180G  PM ESP - Good solid overstable disc. Personally just not the most comfortable in the hand. I throw an MD5 instead but if I were to lose it, it would be the next disc in line. Not so overstable where it is not useable.

This disc is beefy. It can hand a ton of power and is somewhat forgiving when it comes to off axis torque or when you miss the angle by a bit. The one I bag is a bit flatter than most and just loves to be over stable. The plastic is tough and fairly grippy. I like to use this for forehand upshiots that require a bit more distance and even a bit of anhyzer compared to my infinite discs Ruin. This disc gets me a bit more distance with a reliable fade.

This is a great disc and I would definitely recommend trying it out if you are looking for an over stable mid range. Great for backhands, forehands, and windy days. However, I am a big fan of the Hornet and would tell you to try that out first, just a personal preference.

This is definitely a disc that requires a lot of control when throwing. It is very high speed  understable, low speed stable. Not at all what I thought this disc would be based on reviews and flight ratings. But continued work with it has helped. We will se what the future has in-store for this one.

Looking at the flight numbers I was expecting something extremely stable. What I got was a disc that would flip up and even turn over when given some power. My buzzz flight compared to it was extremely similar with maybe a slight more fade at the end. If a disc has a +1 in the turn, I'm expecting something like a stego.

The actual flight is decent if powered down to under 200', but it's a mistake to market it with the numbers given. To be fair, I have only owned one and maybe mine was damaged in some way (did not look like it).

If you're looking for a true overstable mid I would stay clear of the malta. My recommendations are a DD justice or a MVP deflector. Those are truely over stable.

    174g ESP Malta

The Malta is definitely one of my favorite mid-ranges I own, along with being one of the most comfortable mids I've ever held. However, I found the Malta to be nowhere near as overstable as Discraft's flight numbers suggest. I expected a similar, longer flight to a Zone, but I found that the stock Malta flies more like a new Roc3. This was not necessarily a bad thing for me, because the Malta was much more comfortable in my hand than the big bead of the Roc3. The Malta is definitely still an overstable disc, and will consistently finish hard left. Actually, because it is not as overstable as its flight numbers indicate, I throw the Malta more often than any of my other mid-ranges, as I love its smooth flight and reliable stable finish. I am comfortable throwing the Malta on holes up to about 280 feet. If you are looking for a stable and workable mid-range, I would definitely recommend the Malta. If you are looking for a very overstable mid, I would probably consider looking elsewhere.

This disc is great for anyone who doesn't mind a pretty big bead on a throwing discs. This disc is my overstable mid workhorse. I love this disc for anyshot that I am feeling like I need a buzz flight but with a little harsher fade at the end. I primarily throw this disc backhand but I do use it for forehand rollers occasionally. The only thing I'd have to say is a drawback on this disc is if it is a pretty decent headwind it usually flips up to flat and just carries straight. Or at least mine does. But overall great disc.

The flight ratings suggest that this is an absolute meathook and boy are they wrong. As we know discs do vary but this isn't anywhere close to what I was expecting. I was looking for a disc I could push a little farther than my zone for forehand shots (around 250ft). When thrown flat or on a slight hyzer the Malta would flip up and hold a straight line. I was baffled considering the flight ratings Discraft gives it. To me, the Malta is a Buzzz with a hard fade at the end. I am giving this 3 stars not because it is a bad disc but because it is not what I was expecting from the flight ratings. It can be useful in certain situations but it wasn't doing the job for me. Since then I tried out Discrafts other overstable mids and I found that the Buzzz OS was perfect for forehand and the Drone fits the spot in my bag where the Malta was going to go. Hopefully, others will enjoy the Malta more then I did, but for now it will be used for fieldwork only.

Switched to the Malta after not having success with various mid-ranges on a straight or s curve line. Instantly loved this disc. Great feel in the hand as well as a solid flight path. The fade is rated at a 3 but seems closer to a 1 when thrown forehand to me. My go to disc for center fairway shots a putter won't reach.

I recently added this disc to my bag. So far I have found this to be a perfect complement to my Buzzz. This flies just like the Buzzz through the majority of the flight and then has a super hard finish at the end. I have been working this disc into more shots at my local courses and it is beginning to replace my Buzzz when throwing in more open holes.

I currently own the proto version and a first run version. Of the two the Proto is my favorite but I love both discs for various situations the Proto is a little bit more of a straight flight for me and I can get a nice S curve flight out of it if I give it just a little anhyzer. The first run version is a bit more overstable and will stay flat with a good predictable fade at the end. I love this disc for hyzer shots and particularly hyzer spikes when I need a good bit of accuracy. It is a really good disc once you gain a little angle control. I personally love both versions and have both in my bag. I would highly recommend this disc for a beginner looking to step up their game or a seasoned veteran that is looking for another useful disc.

I picked up this disc to fill a hole in my bag for a meat hook midrange. I got it in store and so I had not read the reviews yet, just went off the numbers, and boy are they wrong. I wish I had gotten a proto version because the production run is not nearly as overstable as it suggests. I found I get a ton of turn out of this, especially if I muscle down. I would rate the turn a -1 at least. As for fade, it does fade nicely, but still not a 3, more like a 2 to me. Its not currently in my bag because I have other discs that feel better in my hand and do what this does. It sure does look pretty though!

The Malta is everything I want in a highly-overstable midrange. Think of this as a slow Firebird or Felon. It seems like the +1 turn has caused some controversy but I honestly think it's fair. Brand new, this thing starts fading immediately out of the hand even if you give it your full. I throw around 400ft on a good day and am only able to get this thing around 250ft.

    Super overstable and reliable.

I have a Proto Malta and a first run. I really do enjoy this disc. I stopped throwing a Buzzz OS for this disc. I love the feel of the disc having slightly smaller hands. Great glide and distance potential even from an OS disc. just a fair warning, the prototypes are far more overstable than the first runs, however I have noticed that both start out more as meathooks. The ESP has broken in faster than I have liked and my first run malta flies more similar to maybe an Emac Truth at the end of the flight. Overall, a fantastic disc if you are looking for more finish, but still a relatively straight flyer with good angle control

Disc - 177 Discraft Paul McBeth Prototype Malta

Feel - The Malta is fairly shallow and has a decent sized bead. It feels/flies similarly to an Innova Roc in my opinion. If you like the feel of the roc or roc3 then you should like the feel of the Malta. The swirly esp plastic is beautiful and very durable.

Flight - The Malta is overstable but not extremely overstable. The prototypes are more stable than the first runs or production runs. I enjoy the prototype a lot but could see how the other runs would be useful as well.

Overall - The Malta is an interesting disc because it was made out to be very overstable and it isn't quite as stable as many were expecting. If you are looking for a roc3 type disc then this could be a great disc for you.

This disc is very interesting. Honestly love this disc. It's not so overstable that it's not throwable. You can really work some awesome flex shots and add something to your bag that you don't realize you need. Very close to a zone just a bit faster and glides farther.

First thing I want to do is point out the diameter on this disc.

    Malta = 21.3

    Roc3 = 21.7

Based on the diameter the max weight to be within regulation is 175g. As soon as I picked it up I knew it was a smaller diameter midrange, and I love it! The smaller diameter gives me more confidence in my control and it shows. I am very acurate with this disc in the 250 to 300 foot range. I foumd the flight interesting because it was very straight for most of its flight but had a good deal of hook at low speed. I could snap it off with decent strength and it didn't turn over, even into a headwind. (FYI - my release is natually on a hyzer). The top is pretty flat. Not pancake flat (not MD4 flat) but it is a flatter topped midrange and very comfy in my hand. There is a bead, which I like on mids. The plastic has medium flex and is very grippy. I suggest trying this disc out if you like the Ontario tooled Classic Roc or the new flat toped San Marino Classic Rocs. It feels similar but with a slightly wider rim.

I give it 0 turn and 3 fade.
