This disc flew exactly like the numbers suggest. Trilogy plastic, of course it's great. This disc is slightly larger then some other drivers my just a tad. Gives it more glide and maybe a straighter flight.

This disc didn't make my bag only because it's longer then some control drivers but not as long as the max distance drivers I have.

This disc feels great in the hand, rim isn't to wide for a fairway driver but it glides like a driver... slightly understable so throw it on a slight hyzer and watch it work it's way back .. it well break in slowly and become more understable..  the Vip, opto type plastic is a little more over stable..

I've owned a few Northman's in tournament plastic. After beating them in they're fairly flippy. Ideal for hyzer flip w/ a little s-flight.

The VIP plastic is a little more stable. Still slight turn like I wanted.

I use this disc for easy distance. It's less stable than the numbers. Or another way to put it is this- the pictured flight path will be true when throwing hyzer or tailwind.   That said it has great glide and not so understable that you sacrifice much consistency. One I got the hang of this disc, it has become a staple for me. Mine is over 170g, and is a very versatile disc.

This is essentially a faster Escape. The shots I like this most for: hyzer flip, turnovers, and straight shots. It has enough turn to hold big anny lines and enough backbone to stay up.  I can flip it to straight, even in a headwind it hyzer holds pretty well (use a little more hyzer). Flat release it turns out and fades back to center. In a tailwind it flies like the picture.

I haven't done and roller shots with this, but I think it would do a pretty good job, though more understable discs will likely perform better for this. I have one of these and a Fortress in my kit and have most speed 10 shots covered. Great control and distance I don't have to work too hard to achieve.

I recall reading somewhere about how this was one of the hidden gems of the Westside Lineup; I completely agree with that statement. I am still working my way to the point where I am 100% comfortable disc, but I see glimmers of greatness whenever I throw it. The Northman is one of those drivers that forces you to be conscious of your angles throughout your throw, but if you can get a good control throw with it you will be highly rewarded. This disc just does whatever you tell it to, I am always looking for chances to use it.

I agree with Meyer, this is a finnicky disc. For me, it's more than likely the archer rather than the arrow - I have thrown some awesome shots with this thing and I still bag it - I just turn this thing over more than I'd like to. It feels good in the hand, the plastic is cool-looking and tough, I just haven't found the consistency with this disc I've hoped I would.

I would rate myself a solid intermediate player and this disc is super finicky for me.  I absolutely can't throw it forehand unless I power down to about 50% or less, it just flips right away.  On a BH, I have throw some great shots, but again, can't put everything into it.  I've throw some that have taken a complete 90 degree turn and finished so far off the mark and then others have been great.  The discs feels good in the hand and is smooth on the release.  It is just a little too touchy for me to 100% trust.  I'm sure as my form gets better, this might become a more reliable disc for me, but for now, I only use it in casual rounds.

The Northman is one of the most underrated disc made by Westside! If you are looking for that next step up from a Underworld or Hatchet this is the place to start. As a beginner I started throwing the Northman and it was generally stable/overstable for me. As I got better and started to add more power, adjust my form, and gain consistency the Northman worked like no other disc. I eventually could throw dead straight hyzerflips and nice slow turning anhyzer shots with the Northman. It really helped me correct my nose angle issues as well as allowed me to see how much power a disc could really take. Yes this disc can be thrown too hard, but it has such an amazing flight once you get your fundamentals into place. One of the things I love most about the Northman is its 21.5cm diameter. The disc is much larger than all of my distance drivers and loves to glide. Once this disc runs out of speed it loves to stay up and push forward giving you that extra distance you've been looking for. It fits perfectly in my average sized hands and I can even throw it with a fan grip if needed. I truly think anyone with a more athletic background could use this as their first driver. The Northman is also like I said an amazing disc for slower arm speeds to work up to. You will not be disappointed with the Northman regardless of your skill level!

I love all three of my Northman(s)

I generate a lot of arm speed in a slow step through cross step. I use this disc for tunnel shots because for me it is the straightest thing in my bag. I highly recommend this disk for all players.

I just started throwing the Northman fairly recently. Mine is VIP about 169g. I think it is not as fast as it's rated and not as stable as it's rated.

I would say this a "tweener" disc. Probably longer than a fairway driver and shorter than a max distance driver.

What I'm discovering is how controllable this disc is. I'm not a power thrower, so I look for discs I can throw accurately. This driver has all the qualities for pinpoint accuracy. I can see power arms turning it over, but for a less powerful thrower, this disc shines.

Like the other Westside discs I have tried, it has very good glide. It's not the best into a headwind, but on calmer days it hits the spot you want it to.

I imagine the more I throw it, I could rate it a five star, but right now it's in my bag as a four star driver on shorter holes.

The Northman is an awesome disc. It is fairly easy to throw. My personal opinion is that this is more of a control driver rather than a distance driver. It fits pretty comfortably in the hand, the rim is thin.

The flight of this disc is pretty true to the diagram above. I think it is more understable than it suggests though. I can throw this disc around the distance of 350-375 feet on a consistent basis. Like state earlier this disc is more understable than suggested. As such, I throw this either a hyzer flip, or not as hard as I can. Throwing it this way I have the most favorable flight paths and greater distance.

Throwing late fades to the right (RHBH) is pretty easy to do. It makes this disc a good disc to have in the bag, to me it is similar to the thief, just faster, and greater potential for distance.

Overall this is a great disc, and easy to throw. I like it a lot.

Great all purpose distance driver for intermediate players. Finicky enough that you absolutely still have to pay close attention to form but high reward in both shaping and distance capabilities. I have been most impressed not just with left/right control in this disc but also with vertical control (it will ride low and absolutely burn some worms when needed but is reliable enough on any line when you need to get up and over an object). With varying levels of "beating in" this disc could absolutely cover down in control and distance slots for stable to understable needs. Highly recommended in VIP plastic.

I recently picked up a VIP Northman 174g while trying out some 10-12 speed Trilogy discs; the goal was decent distance that I could fan grip comfortably. The Northman was a success! This disc has a good feel, and just the stability I was looking for; something strait to understable that I could shape.

The Northman is a great disc and I love the flight. It feels good in my hand, but not as good as some of the others I tried (Northman < Flow < Renegade in terms of comfort). However in stability from most understable to stable it went: Renegade < Northman < Flow.

The Northman was very neutral and easy to shape. I could throw it flat at about 70% and it would just go dead strait with a little turn. After I started putting some more power into it, it would turn over a little more. I am excited to see how the disc beats in, I am writing this review based on a brand new disc. I have found that VIP is extremely durable, but beats in quickly to a consistent flight that is generally a little more understable than it starts (of course).

I was able to use this disc successfully forehand, backhand, and for rollers. It held angles and lines very well, with just a little turn.

I really recommend trying the Northman out; it is a fairly easy disc to throw that can offer a lot of distance. I could see this being in the most advanced players' bag, or someone new.

Two of my favorite drivers are the Hatchet and the King. The Northman fits in perfectly right between these two in terms of stability and Distance potential The Northman isn't quite as understable as the Hatchet, and will stay straighter, without fading out as much at the end of the flight as my medium stable Kings (The stability of Westside Kings can be all over the place).  Overall a great disc for good distance without having to throw your arm out.

Backhand drives i have not felt comfortable with since i've started throwing the northman in vip plastic it is now my go-to driver for backhand distance drives. does great with flat throws for even a good hyzer flip. the northman will help those struggling with backhand driving.

The Northman is one of my go to drivers off the tee. Tailwind, flat ground or uphill, open field, this is my go-to. It is a great hyzer flip to flat, can S-curve with a powered up hyzer flip throw, and can ride a soft hyzer line if needed. I have found that unless it is fully turned over, The Northman will fade back providing reliability. Slightly finicky, but not like other understable drivers. A great beginner driver as it is not too fast, comfortable medium sized driver rim, and has some understability. I slot this between my Escape and my Boatman.

I can't say I'm a huge Westside fan.  I've had my hands on my fair share of their discs, but none of them ever really clicked, minus the Underworld when I first started playing.  I picked up a VIP 172g Northman out of a buddies bag and tossed it in the field one day and turned it over badly.  After giving it another drive, I was sold.  This is the disc I go to for placement drives and long low ceiling tunnels.  It'll S beautifully, glide for days, and has a dependable fade at the end with a semi decent skip.  I do think the speed rating is a bit high from Westside.  With just a nice smooth pull, and a good hit, this disc easily touches 350ft for me.  I always feel like I'm leaving a lot off of it on my drives compared to my other discs.  It just goes and goes.

Straight flyer especially when I release it a bit lower (RHBH). I can toss this thing pretty far for a ten speed as well, near 385ish feet if I max it out. I would say it would be a solid choice for someone who is searching for a disc to be their first straight distance driver as it doesn't take much to toss it straight. VIP plastic or tourney it doesn't matter as they both are great options. If you want a better feel go Tourney. Better durability, get VIP which is eerily similar to Innova Champion. This is one of those distance drivers that you can use on a lot of holes, a go to driver in any bag!

I have really begun to enjoy throwing this disc. I am a beginner only having played consistently for a little more than 2 months. I could not throw this disc (or any distance driver) for several weeks, but on my last outing I was putting just a little anhyzer on this disc just out of my hand and was getting a beautiful "s" flight pattern as the disc would have a slight overstable fade. I still don't think my technique or arm speed is anything to brag about but I feel confident I can put this disc about 300 feet down the fairway. And I finally feel confident I can put this disc on just the line I want to

This disc is an amazing long distance, gradual turnover disc for me. Personally, it shows the high speed turn in the rating, and just follows that line for quite some time. If you throw it flat, it won't fight out of the turn. The more air you put under it, the more likely it'll come back across center. Overall, very controllable and the larger diameter of this disc helps it fight against the wind, as well as maintaining the line it is flying on. As what is a common problem for Westside's older discs, I wouldn't necessarily agree with the flight rating given to this one. I'd say this disc is closer to a 10/5.5/-2/1.5. I still absolutely love this disc and recommend it to anyone with even slightly more than beginner power; and the fact that it uses the same top mold and has a similar feel to the Boatman that will never leave my bag makes me like it even more!

RHBH. Love this disc. The glide seems to extend for quite awhile and the fade is soft, giving you a touch of extra distance. It seems forgivable with the hyzer flip but will hold a slight anny for a long time. Great for the mellow shots to the right 300 out.

i picked up a northman awhile back and i will say it has found a place in my bag. my northman is a VIP plastic at 166. i really like the rim it feels great it the hand, not to big and not to small. it works well for me on downhill throws that require a disc to turn right then fade a bit at the end of flight. this disc has a substantial amount of glide that really seems to show as it slows down and begins to fade. im not young any more and i don't have as much snap on my throws as i once did, but i can get a fair amount of HST out of this disc. i throw right hand back hand.

Ive been throwing Westside discs for quite sometime now and i am kicking myself for not purchasing one of these before. The Vip plastic that mine is in is top of the line. I prefer the VIP over the tournament. It just feels better and is very durable. I found mine to fly very straight and then fade at the end. I didn't get an S-curve out of mine like the flight pattern suggest. I was throwing mine at about 3/4 power today and i was still getting really nice results out of this disc. I did throw this disc forehand a few times and it seemed to clime into the sky and then get all crazy and die. Throwing backhand seems to be the only way this disc likes to be thrown. This disc says its a speed 10 and i wholeheartedly agree on this. I do feel like its a bit more like a 6 glide than a 5 but its not a bad thing. I would not pick this disc up if your just starting out but after a few months of playing i think this disc would be a great addition to your bag.

My Northman is 174 Yellow, VIP. I was always curious about this disc and I finally got one at the National Collegiate Disc Golf Championships. On the first day of the tournament, 7th hole, I threw my Northman on a hyzer line, downhill shot. At first, I thought it was too high, but it missed every tree, hugged the tree line on the left, and eventually chained out of an ace! It would have been really cool to have my first ace at the National Championships. As far as the flight goes, backhand anhyzer release, this disc turns right and doesn't come back left much at all. When thrown flat, it turns right smoothly and finishes softly to the left. When thrown hyzer, it stays flat while still fading left, but I feel like this disc will turn into a hyzer-flip disc. More like a -2 1 flight rating. This disc is fairly hard to control on sidearm flicks, but it goes super far. This is definitely not the disc to throw sidearm if you are a power thrower. I recommend this disc to beginners because of the speed and glide. If I would have aced with this disc, I probably would have bought another one right away :)
