The Viking Discs Berserker is a speed 10 fairway driver that somehow manages to make the most out of the three categories that characterize a discs flight. The first category, obviously, is glide. The rating is at a 5 from the manufacturer, but a six from me. I don't know whether its the dome-y roof of the disc, the rim, or whatever, but this thing loves to fly. Even with a relatively weaker throw the final third of the flight path looks very similar to the end of a big toss with a distance driver, with that resistance to coming back to earth really rearing its head. It retains it's speed, too. That's something I would need a physics major to explain, but somehow the Berserker can manage an above average skip even after a flexing anhyzer shot. The turn is rated by Viking at -3, which for all intents and purposes is accurate. The problem we face here is that it seems that with understable discs, the flight rating quickly and drastically changes based on the velocity of the player. As far as the turn that I may have eluded to goes, Viking says that a professional will likely see the last two stats altered to characteristics more resembling a -4, 1 for turn and fade respectively. If you get an armful of this disc, they're right. That works great if you have a big tailwind behind you, as it really will eat up a massive chunk of distance and finish mildly, and accurately. As it is an understable driver at the top of the fairway or control range, it would probably make a good roller disc. I don't throw many rollers and honestly I haven't attempted one with this mold. The one thing I bet you didn't think this disc could do is be finessed into a headwind. Right. The fade of 2 for a more mild throw does mean the disc is looking to finish left on a RHBH toss, and that fade is JUST present enough to keep her on that line. Obviously, I would recommend that you would use a different disc, probably the Valhalla or Thor if you were fighting a big headwind, but it can be done if one need's an accurate headwind shot that I can't necessarily bomb with all of one's might. For those situations, it is the disc I reach for. In fact, I find myself reaching for this disc quite a bit as it's flight is forgiving enough to really allow you to shape a wide variety of shots. That fade really will bring it back, though. For slower players, you can expect a finish that lands dead straight in front of you, or something that at least attempts to finish straight if you can get the most out of the pro ratings Viking has given you. Normally I would say this disc would be very beginner friendly, but if you are newer to the game, I would get a Cosmos, which is much better for learning how to shape shots while maintaining the characteristics of Fairway and Control drivers. Again, I am very impressed with Viking Discs, and I will continue to pack my bag full of these awesome discs.
PROS: Great under stable, top of the food chain control driver. The most well rounded disc I have in my bag, and probably the most well rounded disc I have ever thrown.
CONS: Despite the statistics, not necessarily beginner friendly. But that's okay! This isn't necessarily a bad thing.
