    Armor Details

Armor plastic from Viking Discs is a durable, yet very comfortable, opaque plastic blend that is very similar to Star from Innova, or Gold Line from Latitude 64. It is a top-notch plastic blend especially for drivers -- able to take a beating and keep performing.

The disc is well made and the plastic is high quality, and a use can be found for what it does, but like other reviews have indicated, the results in Armor plastic can vary significantly -- sometimes ending up as a much more overstable disc than expected for the speed and listed turn/fade numbers. I got one of those: It doesn't really compare to other 7-speed drivers I have; its flight path is much more like my Felon or Firebird. Even into wind, I just can't keep this from fading sooner than I want and leaving my distance shorter. I have almost a complete set of Viking discs, with the others all being in Storm plastic. It's a great set of discs: I like the Storm plastic and the discs mostly match the flight numbers. Unfortunately this Armor Barbarian is sort of the black sheep of the lot. However, maybe this will just prove to be a disc that needs more beating in than most others have typically been for me and will earn a more excellent rating in the long run.

Had a barbarian in ground plastic that I liked couldn't get a lot of distance with it but seemed to be fairly close to the flight numbers. Ended up losing it so got one in armor plastic and wow it's overstable to say the least. I don't have a big arm at all but can't get this thing to go anywhere except dump. Kind of disappointing because the Cosmos is massively understable. Hoping Viking comes out with a stable low speed fairway driver.

I'm a fan of Viking Discs, but this particular mold just doesn't work for me.  I actually got one in all 3 plastics, and they are all incredibly over-stable.  It flies much more like an MVP Deflector than a TeeBird for me.  Might work well for big arms, but for average players like myself, not really usable.

Got this disc to try out the plastic and I'm impressed. Plastic seems really high quality, it's grippy, and pretty. I've thrown the disc a couple times, and it has really nice glide, I was throwing it really far for a 7 speed. I definitely recommend trying out some Viking discs.

You'll notice a higher rated review from myself earlier in the feed for this disc. That was for the disc, brand new, in the base (ground) plastic. The Storm plastic, for reviewing this disc at a later time, is also incredible. Armor plastic, I have found, is one of the best blends I have ever felt. Legitimately incredible stuff for almost all of Vikings discs, including the putters and their slowest mid range. No doubt, you read what I prefaced that with. ALMOST all. I couldn't tell you why. Maybe it's just me, or my presuppositions, technique, the wind, or whenever I trimmed my fingernails last when I throw it but in the armor plastic this thing is   B   E   E   F   Y   . Seriously. That's not a bad thing, but when I threw the Barbarian in storm plastic and became more enamored with this disc than I was with even what's technically the 'bottom of the barrel' of their plastics, I assumed one thing. The natural progression of the quality of plastics meant that the armor plastic Barbarian would be the golden child. The prodigal son. The Chuck Berry amongst big bands. For better or worse, and crucially WHAT I BOUGHT IT FOR, it more closely resembled Ringo Starr amongst the rest of the Beatles. I wanted to buy the best version of the most well rounded disc. The top is flat, but so is my Thor, which is rated at literally double the speed. I don't understand. For that reason, I didn't bag it for a while, until I attempted a shot at my local course. Imagine a left to right dogleg, with foliage densely bordering the right side of the hole. I threw one of those James Conrad style-steep anyhzers, the disc leveled out, skipped, and landed just in circle one so I could take advantage of a birdie opportunity (I didn't). For the sake of this disc, and maybe it is just my disc, I find it has more in common with a Champion Firebird then it does with a Storm Barbarian. For now, it's for headwind fairway drives and utilty/escape/anhyzer shots.

PROS: Despite not being what I expected, it ended up finding a unique, useful home in my windy day bag, and helped me learn that much more about what I like in a disc.

CONS: If this were meant to be a competitor to the Firebird, it would be just a tad too slow, but it isn't meant to be that. It just wasn't quite 'as advertised'.

This is a super over stable and reliable fairway driver in armor plastic. The barbarian feels nice on the both backhand and forehand. It takes some practice to learn the flight pattern but once you learn it, it becomes one of the best fairways to throw.

So as other reviewers have stated, some of these turn out to feel somewhat true to their flight numbers and others are insanely overstable. I got one of the overstable ones but I'm definitely not upset about it. I can use this as a utility disc to get out of a bad situation, or I can forehand it on a lot of hyzer and watch it take a perfect s-shaped flight as it dumps hard to the right after 225-250 ft. Armor plastic is pretty much indestructible, as I've launched this disc into trees, fences, baskets, and roads, and all that it's sustained are minor cosmetic blemishes. Haven't noticed even the slightest bit of stability loss. Very comfortable disc to hold, as it's pretty blunt on the edge for a 7 speed disc. Do yourself a favor and pick up a Barbarian.

Unfortunately, I think I received a dud. The weather finally warmed up by me, and I went to do some testing with the Barbarian, Berserker and the Ragnarok. While the Berserker and Ragnarok flew true to their posted flight numbers, the Barbarian just dumped. I'm seeing some similar reviews in here about it being glideless and massively overstable, and sadly that was the case for me. That being said, the other two discs I tried from Viking were great!

I have gotten this disc two times. The first time my friend threw it into a pond and it was my favorite disc. Absolutely amazing predictability and accuracy. My strong arm friend could get it to flip on his forehand, but he also has a bit of OAT so that may affect it. I could hit any gap comfortably and easily and it would just fly DEAD straight until fading just barely at the end of its flight.

Then the second one I got from infinite, and ti was one of the ones Matt seems to be describing, glideless overstable to all heck disc. I throw it on more anhyzer than I throw my MVP tesla and it still dumps 125 feet earlier. When you roll the dice on the 50/50 chance and get the good barbarian, it will be the best disc you've ever thrown. If you do not get the good one, you may just wanna huck it in the trash.

I will add my less overstable Barbarian did not come from infinite. I have bought other Viking Discs from infinite, and the low glide overstable versions show up often. I got a crazy overstable ragnarok, barbarian, and axe from them (The overstable axe is actually my get out of jail free card disc and I love it, but it still was not what I was paying for).

Straight. That's what happens when I throw this disc. It just goes straight forever. It doesn't really have a ton of fade either, in my opinion. This is a great speed 7 driver for just putting a little snap on it and having it beeline straight down the fairway and not fade too far from the line. This reminded me of the Infinite Discs Exodus, but with less fade.

The plastic feels great, sort of like a Gold Line or Fuzion plastic (but less pearly). Not quite as flexible as some Star plastics I've felt. The rim is pretty small and easy to manage. This would probably be a good disc for people shifting from the beginner to intermediate phase to get some straighter distance.

The Viking Disc Barbarian is a solid stable Fairway Driver. Flight wise I'd compare it to a beat in TeeBird or an Infinite Exodus. Armor plastic is my favorite in the Viking Family. It has a good feel, somewhat similar to Star plastic but different in a way I can't really describe. Perhaps it's not as flexible? Whatever the difference is, it has a good feel, good grip, and is sufficiently durable. I'm a big fan of the artwork on Viking Discs. Overall, this disc doesn't do anything that fairway drivers from many other companies do, but if you want a consistent stable driver that looks and flies good, you might as well try a Barbarian.
