The Onyx is an easy to throw fairway driver from Vibram. Much like the beloved Diamond from Latitude 64 this disc offers beginners a high glide rating and a minimal fade rating that will allow for new distances to be reached. New players will find the Onyx to fly with straight with perhaps some slight turn, and need not worry about a hard left fade throwing right handed back hand throws.

I tried an Onyx in a huge stack of tester discs, and of the few Vibram discs I tried, the Onyx was just not a great disc. My arm is way too strong for this disc! I tried a 155g and I couldn't even get it to fly in a tailwind. I was testing discs out in extremely windy conditions, so I am not extremely surprised about my opinion of this disc. Vibram has never been the best wind fighting plastic, and I've never thrown a light weight Vibram disc before.

Trying this disc in a headwind wasn't even worth it, I think it flew about 100 feet, and I was putting as much hyzer as I could on it. The craziest shot that happened was in a right to left tailwind. As with all my test throws, I put an extreme amount of hyzer on the disc, so much so that it was uncomfortable. Out of my hand the disc took an extreme elevator to the sky in the tail/cross wind, then flipped over like a headwind and started diving to the ground like a disc would in a headwind. I've never seen a disc so heavily affected by the wind before! In the same wind I threw a roadrunner and Mamba, Innova's extremely flippy drivers, and while they didn't do so well in the wind, they got twice the distance that the Onyx got. The Onyx was tossed around in that extreme wind in no way that I had ever seen a disc get tossed before. It was crazy!

The best flight I got out of the Onyx was at about 20% from a stand still position. It made a nice hyzer-flip and rode the line for a bit before actually fading. It took me a lot of powering down before I could make this disc show me that it did in fact have the capabitlity to fade. Because of this, I would recommend the Onyx to someone that is brand new to the sport and doesn't have nearly the arm speed of someone who can throw over 400 feet. But if said beginner is in Oklahoma or somewhere windy, I would say forget it!

The Onyx is my favorite of the new Vibram fairway drivers. The one I threw was 155g, and while it was understable, it wasn't as understable as I anticipated. Even at the light weight, I'd say it's not quite as understable as the UnLace. With a nice smooth throw the Onyx flys really straight. Put some power into it, or put it on an anhyzer line and this disc will turn nicely to the right with a right handed backhand throw.

If I were Vibram, I would put the Onyx in their beginner sets because this is a great disc for beginners that also has utility uses for more experienced players.

The Onyx is Vibram's new beginner and easy to use disc. I think this disc fits that very well. I agree wth the other reviews that this disc is surprisingly not crazy flippy for my not quite expert and not quite beginner arm. I still hesitate for now saying that this disc will find a place in my bag though. I think lots of players will be able to use it for straight to understable shots, and it is a great addition to the Vibram lineup.

Now I'm not a "beginner", but this disc is the bomb.com!  The Onyx makes throwing look easy.  As a more experienced player, i picked it up and thought the it was too light and flimsy, but it deceived me.  I gave it a huck and wow, it soared through the air, just as far as my max weight distance drivers!  It's understability isn't as crazy as I thought it would be- it was the perfect amount to flip up and gain the extra distance before fading back gently with some serious glide.  It's what I would describe as a low speed Unlace, but with a bit less turn.

Basically, I'm going to recommend this disc to all of my friends who are wanting to add some distance to their game!  I've already watched a couple beginners throw it and they were super impressed with the distance.

I don't throw a lot of Vibram, but I do know they got this one right!
