The Onyx is an easy to throw fairway driver from Vibram. Much like the beloved Diamond from Latitude 64 this disc offers beginners a high glide rating and a minimal fade rating that will allow for new distances to be reached. New players will find the Onyx to fly with straight with perhaps some slight turn, and need not worry about a hard left fade throwing right handed back hand throws.

I've lost a few of these and have tried to replace them with other discs, but I just can't.  This disc is so easy to throw, so easy to grip, so controllable. It doesn't get much easier than this disc.  Just don't try to crush it.

As mentioned in the description, the Onyx is Vibram's version of the Latitude 64 Diamond. I'm a woman, and the Diamond is a staple of my bag, so I just had to try the Onyx. I bought a blue, 152.4 gram, X-Link Firm Onyx, and compared it with my half dozen Diamonds, all 152 to 156 grams.

I carry two Diamonds, one that flies as advertised, and one that is even more understable. The Gold line, Opto and Frost plastics are normal, while Recycled plastic is always much more understable. The Onyx has now replaced the understable Diamond in my bag.

To examine, the Onyx and the Diamond are extremely similar. The rims are virtually identical to grip, but the under surface of the Diamond's rim is somewhat more concave. Both discs are very domey. While I've never had a problem gripping a Diamond, I must say that the Vibram's rubber is more grippy, which may account for the amazingly easy distance I get with it.

As far as the flight, the Onyx falls between a new, stiff Diamond and a really beat in, Recycled one. However, unlike the flippy Diamond, I have yet to have the Onyx turn and burn. I know better than to challenge it with a strong headwind, but it has handled modest breezes very well. When thrown flat and given some height, I get a huge, long, right-turning arc. For a straighter path, the Onyx needs some hyzer, even with my slow arm. As for the finish, the Diamond has a little more fade than I'd like in an understable disc, and will fight out of an anhyzer now and then. The Onyx's fade is very mild, which is nice.

What has really impressed me about the Onyx is how easy it is to get the performance I described above. Maybe it's the grip of the rubber, but when I tried for max distance, I was able to get it almost every time with a lot fewer errors and slips. I can throw the Diamond as far as the Onyx, but only when I hit the sweet spot, maybe one in three tries.

Overall, I still have a Gold Line or Frost Diamond in my bag for the majority of understable distance shots, but for standing throws, tailwinds or huge anhyzers, the Onyx is a superb solution for slow-armed players.

Footnote: The comparison of the Vibram Unlace and the Latitude 64 Bolt or Westside King (in Air plastic) would be almost identical.

I don't typically use a lot of Vibram discs in my game, with the exception of the UnLace which is a big favorite of mine. When I saw the new Onyx hit the shelves with an understable flight path and all very light-weight, I was anxious to give it a try. All of the Onyx discs are in the 130's to 150's grams, so they are designed for beginners who may not have the strongest arm. Thus, I was expecting that the real disc-slingers might just turn this thing over and not get any real distance. However, I've now watched several people who really gave it a lot of steam, and it flew like a champ, going a lot furher than any of us expected. When I tried it, I found that it fly very similar to my UnLace, purhaps with even less of an anhyzer tendency. It is very well behaved for being so light. I also watched a woman throw the Onyx who typically has a hard time getting distance with the discs in the 170's, and she flicked it like a pro, declaring "wow". She had to buy it immediately.

My first impression is that the Onyx will be a real hit with the newer players who will find themselves throwing further than usual, but will also surprise the veterans. If you're going to try throwing some rubber, then grab an Onyx and give it a few tries. I know I was impressed.
