    Fossil Details

Fossil plastic is the base plastic for Reptilian Disc Golf, similar to Gateway's plastic blends. It feels great in the hand - grippy, yet firm. This is the kind of plastic that you want in a putter!

The RDG Gila is a good, significantly overstable mid, but it carries like nobody's business! I typically bag Glow MD3 and more recently a Color Glow for my OS mid slots, but gave the Fossil Gila the slot for a while and DANG! Yes, it performs just as stable/overstable as the two Innova discs I typically use, but has as much if not more glide than a MD3. Like if the glide of my seasoned S-MD3 got the stability from my Glows. I'm finding with the glide on this disc, I can actually take a bit of power off the shots I'm used to using these for and get the same result with easier finesse/touch. When I give it a full pull, thrown flat, it doesn't offer much (if any) turn and just goes straight for days, then as it slows, starts to quickly fade but doesn't dump like many super overstable mids like to do. (MOAB, Justice, Verdict, Drone) My closest comparison would be a more aggressive Roc3 or a Discraft Hornet.

Initially I worried that this big of a bead may be uncomfortable. However, for my hands, it nestles perfectly in the crook of my 1st knuckle on my index finger. Very comfortable grip with smooth release as the bead is large, but very well rounded and smooth.

This is a mid-cycler's dream. The Amber Gila is a butcher and holds onto the meat, but the Fossils season into glidey laser beams with a strong fade.

The new Reptilian Disc Golf Gila was a fun midrange disc to try out. Mine had been used a bit, and being in Fossil plastic I am pretty sure it was already not as overstable as a new one would be, but it still had some pretty good fade to it. So overall I really enjoyed the feel of the disc in my hand. I think Fossil plastic feels fantastic and I can have confidence in my grip when I use it. Also it has a pretty significant bead that felt great in my hands. It was maybe a bit more shallow than I would have preferred, but not shallow enough to deter me away from the disc. I mentioned that mine had already gotten some love before my first throw, but for me the Gila would hold straight with no turn when released on a flat line, and it would hold pretty dang straight before finally giving in to a pretty strong and predictable fade at the end of the flight. In feel and flight I thought this disc reminded me the most of a Latitude 64 Mace.

In the end, I didn't really feel like it offered me anything that I couldn't already manage with the discs I have in my bag, but if you are looking for something with a little more overstability than say a Roc3, give this a shot! Also if you haven't tried out Reptilian plastic blends at all, I'd say they are worth trying at least once to see if you like it, as it is different from most major brand plastic blends.

I threw the Gila in Fossil plastic and it felt great and flew fine, though it beat in very quickly, becoming less overstable after only minor use. But I didn't mind the change in flight too much. With moderate throwing speed the Gila still had a nice fade at the end-of-flight. When thrown with more power, the beat-in disc flew straight, sometimes even pulling to the understable side. Thus, once beat in, the Gila became slightly less predictable, though its flight could be controlled by consciously adjusting speed and release.

That lack of predictability on the fossil plastic version can be avoided by getting the more premium Amber plastic. I preferred the Gila as a more overstable mid-range, so I give the disc four stars as it is designed, though I was temped to knock it down to three stars on the less predictable Fossil plastic version. But I like the feel of the disc and still found use for the less stable version, so if you by it in Fossil, just know that you'll eventually alter the way that you use the disc.

The Gila is more of a traditional midrange, with the older plastic feel and the concave wing. The inside of the rim is really flat, so it is good if you like that flat edge for flicking (think inside of a Harp). The rim doesn't feel as normal as most mids these days, it is a very pronounced and concave, so you do have to be okay gripping around a more awkward (but traditional) rim.

As for flight it is decently overstable. It reminds me a lot of a Roc3. Not quite as overstable as the Buzzz OS I throw. However, I did notice with the Fossil plastic it does beat in pretty quick- after a couple rounds it was already flying straighter. My guess is that the Amber plastic would hold up longer and help it maintain the overstability. Even when it flew straight, though, it did come back at the end.

It'll go about as far as your average mid, nothing too crazy. I threw some anny lines with it for extra distance and it worked pretty well, making a nice S-Curve.

If you want an overstable disc to beat in straight, then go ahead and get the Fossil plastic, it's much more of a base plastic feel than the Amber (which is like Gateway Diamond Evolution)
