Very good understable driver, especially for beginners discing up to fairways. It's glide and understability combo make it very easy to get distance out of. I preferred the extra bit of stability from the River and eventually the Maverick, but there was a time when the Maul was my main driver. I think it is a great disc that many players can find a use for, but I do think that beginners would find the most use out of it.

This disc goes super heavy right. If you want any distance from this you will need to rip it on a hyzer and let it flip. Even then it will end rather far right. This tends to make the disc roll after landing. I would only recommend this for beginners with low arm speed who are worried about ending up left. This may help straighten out your game.

Ok, this is clearly a disc for beginners or weaker arms... I have a weak to moderate strength arm and love this disc.  I can throw it at 80%, very controlled, at a comfortable hyzer angle and it will flatten and glide for days.  If the day is calm, I love taking this disc out and throwing soft, controlled flips at 270-290 foot baskets.  I can count on a really straight flight. The danger comes when I try to mash this disc.  Then it turns over and screams right or dives into the ground... Still, the feel and the long glide with no effort is very fun.

There is no reason why this can't be a beginner's first driver. For me, this thing was incredibly understable, even when I was a beginner. For beginners, I've seen this thing have amazing flex lines and with the amazing glide that it has it went quite a ways! Seriously, this disc floats in the air adding just a ton of footage to your throws just through the glide. The only problem with this disc is that once you start to throw this disc well and get to take advantage of that sick glide that it has, you probably are going to be turning it over soon. This was in my bag for only a short period of time for its sweet spot in my development. That being said, I'm incredibly grateful to have gotten the disc because it helped teach me how to better put spin on a disc and take advantage of the distance these L64 7 glide discs will give you.

In summation, absolutely get this disc early on in your development! It might even stay a mainstay in your bag! At worst, it will make you a much better disc golf player by helping you learn how spin the discs. Trilogy discs are the absolute best at helping you learn the game and I cannot recommend this and the other understable discs from this company!

I feel the Maul is criminally underrated. When I first started, this disc helped me fall in love with this sport. Everyone bumps the River as the best driver for players that are just getting started, but the Maul (172g Gold-Line) I was gifted was so understable and had so much glide, I was throwing 175-250' hyzer-flips straight as an arrow for breakfast, lunch, AND dinner.

As my motion got better and my arm-speed increased, I started noticing that my throws with the maul were finishing further and further to the right. Now this disc is just too flippy to use as a go-to.

HOWEVER: If you have arm speed that's fair to middling and you're looking for a BH-Roller disc, the Maul would be a great candidate.

173g Gold Line Maul, Crimson Red

This disc has quickly become a staple in my bag. I've put all of my efforts thus far in my DG career into learning backhand, so I do not have a forehand throw to save my life. For this reason I like to buy discs in a wide spectrum of stabilities. When I bought the Maul I was looking to replace my Opto River that become to beaten into understable (no matter how i threw it, it wanted to flip and roll). The Maul, for the most, fit the bill for what I was looking for. Don't expect to break this out and just "get it". It takes some time in a field to get the feel for what it can and cannot do. Judging the distance I can throw this is a bit hard to measure because you are throwing a lot of lateral distance with it, but if I can get it on a straight line throw, I'm probably looking at about 320ft (my avg. max distance for fairways is 340ish feet).

    What it can do:

    • First off, I reach for this on any right turning hole over 300ft. I've learned to control when it will flip right (and it WILL flip right on any good rip), so it is very versatile with as far as being able to turn it quick or a little late.
    • Back off on the power and put some hyzer on it, and now I'm reaching for this disc on any tightly wooded hole that needs some distance, but also some finesse. Since it flips up easy, you can be much more accurate with your throw.
    • The 1 fade on this is quite negligible, but also quite useful, as it will just barely pull the disc back to flatish most of the time, so you won't get that dreaded cut-roll.
    • This disc will glide quite a ways, but 7 may be too generous.
    • Throw it OUT on a hyzer (instead of straight and flipping it up), and you can get a looong hyzer that stands up a bit at the top.
    • ROLL. I don't have a strong roller game, but I can throw them. Release this disc on ANY anny line and you will most likely roll it.

    What it cannot do:

    • This disc is just not reliable in any kind of wind.
      • Headwind... OK let's just forget the headwind. You'll likely lose this disc somewhere inside the earth as it plummets from the sky.
      • Tailwind SEEMS like it should be money, but it's just a hair too understable to confidently say "OK, this is gonna glide straight for me and coast the tailwind".
    • Maybe it's just me, but the understability of this disc MIGHT even be a -3, which for me is not reliable enough to use for anything that I don't want to turn (like into a tailwind). BUT that should not deter you from this disc, because that's not why you're buying it, is it?

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is either in the same boat as me (rely on understable discs to play right-turning shots), OR this would make a FANTASTIC first fairway driver for someone learning. So long as they aren't rolling their wrist over... Then they'll be learning what a roller is REAL quick.

this is a utility/roller disc for me. my 172 gold line maul is the most understable disc I own. not sure if this disc has a ton of glide as advertised because it is usually turning right pretty hard til it hits the ground not staying in the air long. I like this disc for a couple types of shots but is rarely used
