Disc - 175 Latitude 64 Zero Medium Caltrop

Feel - The Caltrop has an interesting feel. It is very deep and has the thumbtrack rim. It is very slow and not as overstable as advertised. The Zero Medium plastic is very grippy and more durable that I expected. 
 

Flight - The caltrop just isn't that overstable. I assumed it would be a little bit slower harp but it is much more straight. It is similar to an innova rhyno in feel and flight in my opinion. It has a flatter top than most champion rhynos so if you are looking for one of those flat zipper top rhynos but don't want to spend the money I believe that the caltrop could be a good disc for you.

Overall - The caltrop is a good disc but it is not like a zone/harp/pig style of disc.

This disc is one of the great putters to ever be made. That being said, it is also very underappreciated. This disc is very flat topped, with a thumbtrac, and an unusually tall profile. This disc has three distinct purposes for me: long spin putt, windy putt, overstable approach.  SPIN: This disc lends itself to a spin putt, especially in grippy plastic, because of the thumbtrac. With a wider grip on the putter, you can use your thumb as an additional point of torque, which allows for more spin, more control, and more distance.      WIND: This putter is very overstable, not as overstable as a harp, but it is noticeably overstable. This makes it easier to putt in the wind.    APPROACH: Like I mentioned in the spin category, it is easy to put good distance on this disc, the rim is also tall, which allows for easier angle control, and more freedom with the approach. 

The Lat64 caltrop treads into the waters of thumbtrack beefy P&A's with confidence. Being beadless (unlike its stablemate the slammer) and relatively small diameter (compared to a midrange) this disc is either a huge hit or a huge miss in the hand to you and as someone with average sized hands and a general meh feeling towards beads it is pretty easy to work with for me. Being beadless and having a substantial thumb track this disc is very forehand friendly and it's probably the best flick putter I have ever laid hands on.

The Caltrop does fall into a class more related to the utility level but is surprisingly versatile more so than I initially thought when I picked this disc up and it really is just overstable enough to get the job done. This disc balks at windy days (in the classic plastics for approach and the opto for short drives) and being beadless it may be even usable for shorter windy putting if you are comfortable with it in that grip. I think what makes the caltrop the most useful is how well it works for forehand approaches, with a considerable amount of stability this disc is perfect for that 100-120ft and in flick shot that you need to sit close to the basket. 

Beginners may find some luck with this disc but in general it's not quite neutral enough to forgive bad form mistakes and will take a little practice/skill to utilize it to its greatest potential.

The Caltrop is an excellent throwing putter and fun disc to mess around with I think its reasonably versatile and can handle some putting duties when the wind kicks up as well. If you are looking for something similar to a rhino but beadless this disc is a very viable option from Lat 64.

I will just come out and say I am not a fan of the caltrop. The rim doesn't feel good in my hand and I don't care much for the thumb track on it. I didn't try it as a putting putter based on the feel right off the get go, on top of already having putters I love. The main reason I got the caltrop was as a replacement for the prodigy a4 i have. I wanted something that was going to be great for approaches with some slight stability to it, but I just could never get a good release on the disc.

I've done some jumping around with different putters lately. I had to give the Caltrop a try when it came out, because I've enjoyed putters with large or small thumb tracks on the top of the disc. When I first started throwing it, I noticed immediately that it is not beaded on the bottom of the rim. I prefer a bead because I like to hold putters with my index finger on the front of the outer rim for consistency and comfort. Putters are always very personal discs where it is all about how it "feels" in your hand. So, it immediately felt "wrong" to me. I used the Caltrop in both windy and calm conditions, but didn't have much luck with it at all. I found myself coming close, but usually landing low, or bouncing off one side of the basket or the other. I just couldn't get a feel for it or find consistency.

Another player in my group started hitting every putt within 30 feet with a Caltrop, so I knew that it must be me. I tried the Caltrop as a shorter range mid, and that actually worked better for me. I could get it to fly quite straight for at least a hundred feet before fading off gently. I rarely throw my putters as mids because of the bead-- the very thing that helps the disc to "feel right" for putts has the opposite effect for throwing long. So, the Caltrop would be more of an approach disc for me, and less of a putting putter.

I actually really liked the Caltrop as a putting putter. One of the biggest issues I have with putting is keeping my grip consistent. The thumb track on the Caltrop helped keep my thumb in the right place and I putted very accurately with it. Now, many people won't like this disc, because it isn't the usual putter mold shape, but for newer players, for those who are looking for something completely different, you'll probably really like the Caltrop. 

This is definitely a slower disc and does not glide very well. I don't think that I would regularily use it as a driving putter or for approach shots, but it is very controllable and it's not a disc that you are going to throw to far. It's pretty overstable and will hold a consistent hyzer line. While playing around with it, I actually got about a 180 foot fairway aice which was pretty sweet.

My only complaint with the Caltrop, and the thing that kept it from getting a 5 star review from me is that for long putts, it is just a little bit too overstable for my likes. I am really excited for, and hope that trilogy will come out with another thumb track putter that is a little bit straighter flying.

I use this as an upshot disc from 100 ft and in. I've been using a champ Rhyno for the last several months, but the Champion plastic is just too slippery for a fan grip when I really need good touch, especially in the wet. Almost as soon as I decided to get a new throwing putter, Lat 64 releases this. I have 4 rounds in on my 174g Zero Medium Caltrop, and it does what its supposed to do. Deadly accurate (provided I didn't let the disc down with a dumb mistake) even at full power. Flies just like my Rhyno did but with excellent grip. If you want a good overstable throwing putter, this is it!
