The Spear is the point-and-shoot 9 speed driver that everyone needs to bag. Instead of trying to find the perfect run Dynasty/Lift/Undertaker, these discs will be dead-reliable right out of the box. For players who loved the Proton SL Lift with the blimp/zeppelin stamp, these are excellent replacements that are readily available and obtainable. I get the best mileage out of these discs on a baby hyzer to a flat flight with a gentle fade, or by throwing them flat with height and watching a perfectly drifting flight for MILES until it settles gently into the fairway. The Spear has proven to be one of the only slightly understable discs that I've ever thrown that doesn't get taken away by a headwind or get squirelly in a crosswind. It'll just ask for a touch more hyzer. The completely flat bottom wing makes these extremely comfortable in the hand for both backhands and forehands, where this disc shows off its surprising torque resistance. Most 9 speeds in this slot have a concave lower wing that isn't quite as comfortable on a forehand, whereas again, these are dead flat on the wing. I can consistently get 20-40 feet more distance out of these Spears than I can with any beat-in Diablo I used to throw. Once they are well-beat, which in HD plastic takes a good while, they will turn into something closer to a Halo Roadrunner or a Heat.

It compares greatly to a FASTER Discmania FD, as they both have the same diameter and great glide. Hyper Diamond Spears tend to be flatter and lean towards a slightly understable disc, but a Diamond Spear with a touch of dome will have a bit more stability that allows for great diversity within the mold.

For any player looking to fill their neutral/understable 9 speed slot, this one is going to be the winner. And with the prices and consistency coming from Gateway as of late, there's no reason to not bag this disc.

One of the best 9 speeds in the category for straight + easy distance without sacrificing control or too much stability.

    I bag a 175 Diamond and a 165 Hyper Diamond. I'd rate their turn + fade at -2/1 and -3/0.5 respectively.

It's got the parting line height + high speed stability of a Valkyrie, but with the concave wing + clean release +  easy distance + low speed fade of a Roadrunner.

The domey ones tend to be more stable and torque resistant, and they bomb. The flatter ones tend to have easier turn. I like a domey max weight for easy straight distance flat release, and the 165 flat HD for rollers and hyzerflips.

Out of the box, the spear will fly dead straight for about 10 throws. It will quickly become an awesome hyzer flip driver, and is one of my favorite discs to throw in the 350ft range (75%-80% power). On hyzer, it will pop up to flat but still has a medium finish at the end of the flight. Thrown on slight hyzer gets the best distance line; it turns over just enough, but not so much that it doesn't fight out. Thrown straight will get a nice smooth anhyzer that turns the entire way. Thrown on anhyzer will get a nice distance roller. I would not recommend forehands, as the torque resistance is not enough to prevent it from turning and burning on most forehand shots over 250ft.

This disc is best and hyzer flips and turning shots that still need just a hint of fade at the end of the flight. Great for intermediate arms as a max distance driver.

Diamond and Hyper Diamond pastics are both quite comfortable (i actually cant tell much of a difference in the plastic types, it seems like the HD is slightly transparent?), and both have identical flights as far as I could tell.

This doesn't perform as well as some other discs when you first pick it up. I wouldn't suggest it if you are trying to get a handle on under stable discs. After some beating in it may pick up those characteristics but a new player might find it hard at first to get it to turn compared to some other popular under stable fairway drivers. It seem's a little faster than 9 to me as well. Maybe a 10/6/-1/2 Once beat in this thing becomes a weapon. I easily get near the basket on wooded holes which is where I mainly use it.

The Hyper Diamond plastic feels strange.  It's definitely hard, but does not feel grippy at all, instead, it's very slick.  The Spear driver plays much more stable for me than the ratings would suggest--this thing takes a straight left turn right out of my hand.  Worth noting, the HD plastic takes iDye Poly very well, a great choice for those who like to dye their own discs

This disc started out overstable for me but quickly beat in. The spear has an impressive amount of glide on it and will go very straight if you throw it with enough hyzer and the right amount of power.

Gateway Spear HD – the gateway spear is a fast fairway driver with a good finish. The hyper diamond plastic has a great feel but is still stiff enough to be used in all conditions. What’s great about this driver is that it has extremely good glide but when it finishes it finishes strong. If you’re looking for a good fairway driver that can be thrown on a line that you can control and still finish hard and get big skips look no further Gateway is created you a spear for your bag.

Flies exactly like the chart above and numbers indicate, except probably a little more stable at the end. I usually do not throw anything with more than a -1 turn, as I tend to turn and burn those discs. I usually never throw the Spear flat, mostly hyzer flip, which is very easy to do. However, thrown at around 75% flat it will go straight and then begin its slow glidey anny fade due to the understabiltily. Great backhand roller as well. You do not have to kill this disc for it to fly as intended. Plastic feels nice, mine is slightly rubbery feeling, in a good way, not floppy.
