I love stable but not beefy 4 speed discs. Whether its the A4, A5, Tempo, Harpoon, Lasso, or a few others I'll take them all. The Rat is no exception. It's got great tweener speed and feel, can be thrown with good results with or without a run up, and has great torque resistance and decent wind fighting ability. The Rat also feels very like a Zone, so if you love the feel of the Zone but want a less OS version in premium plastic, the Rat is a great choice.

Love the Rat. It's like a less stable version of the Toro (or Zone). Feels great to throw unlike a lot of 4 speeds. Goes straight but is reliably stable. It's my goto disc for straight shots from 200-250'.

I bag 175g Star Rat.  The rat is a flat topped headless mid.  It is easy to reap awe cleanly.  For me when thrown rhfh, this disc will push straight with a little finish.  For me, at least, I wouldn't give this a 3 fade, more like 1.5 - 2.  When thrown flat the disc will stay straight almost the entire flight with a nice soft landing.  On anhyzer it's a little more sensitive but will hold the angle for the most of the flight before panning back to flat for and forward finish.  As far as distance, I've never tried throwing this much past about 200'.

I have been really liking the Rat for short sidearm approaches and flick shots.  It flies very straight with a subtle fade and minimal ground play.  The glide is more than the 2 put forth by Innova and I think it is closer to a 3 or 4.  I also think the fade is closer to a 2 compared to the 3 on the official flight ratings.  For me, this disc has become my go-to for any stand still sidearm shot.   I don't use this as much off the tee which is why I only give it 4 stars.  I've paired the Rat with the Caiman to cover all of my sidearm midrange needs.  Great disc!

I think this is an excellent beginner disc. Pretty straight out of the hand with a manageable fade. Great in the wind and can handle the torque generated by a forehand very easily. I strongly suggest trying the disc out yourself as you may have found your new favorite Mid-range.

The Star Rat is my favorite disc in the bag. It has very little glide and goes exactly where you want it to go. It is my go to disc for touchy forehand approach shots. It has a wonderful flight. It flips up slightly and rides left before fading back right. It is also a great backhand disc!

If you're looking for something really accurate that you can trust, this is the disc for you. It is a great compliment to a more overstable disc like a Gator or a Zone. If you're a forehand dominant player, you have to bag this disc.

The Star Rat has been one of my favorite discs I've used the since I started playing in January and my favorite mid-range disc I've used. I own a 175g disc and I've been wanting to get a 165g disc to try out but could not yet.

I wanted this disc because it was flat topped and I read it was good forehand. It was pretty overstable when before it was beat in so maybe the 3 fade is true out of the box but pretty soon after hitting a couple of trees, it started to lose it's overstability a little bit. The Rat doesn't skip much and a lot of times it will usually stay put where it lands which has been very nice! After beating it in though a lot, it really keeps it's line and struggles to flip. When I throw it RHFH and it has a little anhyzer it stays on it's line and goes left.

I was playing in a doubles tournament with some friends and the course did not have many long holes but I kept using my drivers ineffectively at a time where I was only a few months into playing disc golf,. I was trying to keep up with the people who were better than me, which was everybody. The first round ended not great. The second round after listening to advice from some people on our card, I just focused on using my midrange and putters and my only midrange at the time was the Rat. The second round I performed significantly better and I was delighted. I also hit a a 165 foot birdie with the Rat in the second round which blew my mind.

All in all I think beginners and everyone else can utilize this disc as a forehand, backhand, great mid range disc for all types of shots and they will like it, if not love it!

This is my forehand disc choice that holds a laser on a flat angle and will hyzer fairly hard if needed to. Flat as a board and the stamp is super cool. Flexes good and will fight the wind to a decent extent. it is a little thin and comfortable in the hand for touch shots. Isn't as overstable as the flight numbers when thrown with too much torque.

I'm going to echo the same sentiment as a lot of the other users here, I did not find this disc to be as Over Stable (OS) as it is advertised. If you are looking for a disc with the same profile as the Rat, I suggest trying a Discraft Zone. But if you feel like a zone is too OS for you, definitely give the Rat a try. Just like a Zone, I love the depth of the rim, the flatness of the top, and the feel of the disc for forehand grips. It can be used for chip-shot forehands or a reliable fade off the tee for a 250-275ft shot, depending on how much power you have.

I think this disc is somewhat beginner-friendly because of my ratings on the fade, I don't think it is as harsh as advertised, so for someone learning to throw a forehand upshot, this could bee a great disc to use.

Great upshot and driving putter. If thrown flat and with power backhand, it doesn't turn much like the 0 turn rating suggests. However, the Rat does not fade anywhere close to what the 3 rating suggests. I would rate the fade at a 1.5 not 3. I absolutely love this disc still because it is very point and shoot. I still bag a Zone for forehand putter upshots though because the Rat will turn over with the extra torque of a forehand shot.

I find this to be way more neutral than the overstable flight numbers suggested. Lots of glide with a tamed low speed fade. That being said, I do enjoy it as a BH approach disc, even though I expected it to be a FH workhorse, which I don't find it to be.

For those of you looking for an excellent forehand approach disc, look no further. While it can be a bit tricky to figure out at first, this disc is a must have for players who utilize their forehand more than most. This disc is excellent in headwinds, and very predictable when given the proper flick. It can sometimes turn into a roller if given too much power, which is the reason I gave it a 4 star review. Additionally, it is probably not as "overstable" as Innova would have you believe. It is stable, and similar to what a previous reviewer stated, feels similar in some ways to a Mako3.

Bag this and you won't regret it!

A beginner is probably not going to use this disc the way it was intended to be used. I am huge fan of it because the rim shape and feel is super close to the Mako3 (my favorite midrange of all time). I think of the rat as the overstable compliment to the Mako3. The lack of bead is perfect for forehand shots, and this disc can handle a lot of power without turning over. Basically it is really good at what it was intended for, being an overstable midrange.

I love this disc. The flight ratings really aren’t correct at all but it turned out to be something I really needed. It’s not overstable. It really just feels and flies like a glidey putter. The disc itself feels great in the hand. It’s smooth and flat and is very comfortable. The star plastic honestly feels like a blend between champion and star, which I really like. If you’re looking for a putter to crash and fight headwinds, this is not the disc for you. As previously stated, the zone, harp, or aviarx3 are way more overstable. But if you’re looking for a great approach/upshot disc or a smooth, driving putter, this is it.

I love this disc I have 5 in star plastic if thrown ard flat I can get some turn on them so I will normally put 70% power on flat release and closer on hyzer release to flip flat, for a beginner I can see them throwing it pretty straight with the 3 overstability. The rat feels great forehand couldn’t tell you about backhand cause I’m mainly a forehand thrower. I’d recommend this disc for intermediate players to get the full 100% out of this disc and more, not all rats are flat top I have one that’s a bit concave not much and 2 that are slightly domed.

    Hope this review helps.

I like this disc.  I think the reason why it has turned off some people is because the digits are really not accurate at all.  This is nowhere close to a "meat hook" or "headwind fighter", this is really a big, flat, straight midrange with very little glide.  Release it flat and it will go straight straight straight and lose altitude while it does it.  Not to say that this disc doesn't fade - it definitely fades at the end of the flight, but it will hold straight for a long time first.

To me, in feel, it is pretty much the same as a Mako3 but slightly more fade and way less glidey.  So why would you want a straight midrange with no glide?

Here's a hole at one of my local courses where I throw this disc every time.  It's about 275, steep downhill grade, and the basket is on a perilous down-sloping green.  You would be well advised to NOT go long off the tee.  In this case, you need something straight with low glide, so you can throw it right at the basket without worrying about "flying the coop".  The Rat was made for this type of shot.

I got a Star Rat at 175g to try it out because it was cheap and I had heard good things about them. By all means, it's a good disc, flies decently OS with very little glide like it's supposed to, but I can't find any reason for it to replace my Slammer. It flies almost exactly the same as my Fuzion Burst Slammer, and I'm just more confident and used to the Slammer, so the Rat really doesn't have a place in my bag. If you like thumbtracks try a Slammer. They're money. Otherwise, the Rat or the Harp should do you well.

P.S. For all of the hate the Rat is getting for not being as OS as a Harp, My BT Hard Harp flies pretty similar to the Rat. However, BT Hard is one of the least OS Harps, so that might be why.

The Rat is, unfortunately, a bit of a one-trick pony. It feels absolutely wonderful in the hand and slots perfectly as an overstable forehand approach disc, but that is a rather niche slot to fill. It's not as overstable as a zone or harp, and can't shape shots nearly as proficiently as a Roc, so it unfortunately falls in a sort of gray-area of usefulness, which is a shame considering how good it feels in the hand.

I bought my Rat to replace my Atlas but it didnt make the cut. The Rat has a bit too much fade for my liking and because of it, I struggle with consistent placenent. I am much more comfortable with a straight flyer on my approach shots.

I really like the feel of the star plastic so I will eventually give it another chance but for now, I'll stick with the Atlas.

The Rat is designed to be an overstable approach disc similar to a Zone or a Harp. The Rat does have some nice stability, but I don't think it was quite as overstable of the previous mentioned discs. The Rat does feel good in hand with a nice flat top and thinner rim. If you are looking for a decent approach disc give the Rat a try.

I like this disc but it's very one dimensional to me. It's perfect for backhand spike hyzer shots that get up and then sit down inside 250 feet. Other than that I was rather unimpressed. The rat was supposed to be the perfect forehand upshot disc but for me it came up short. The rim is so thin and shallow that it slips out of my hand when trying to throw forehand. I think that mostly has to do with the fact that I have big hands, but I also felt like the disc has zero glide which I don't like for my forehands. Most of this probably wont apply to everybody, but I do think that there are much better options out there, the westside harp and hyzerbomb mortar to name a couple.

The rat was supposed to be Innova's response to the Westside Harp or the Discraft Zone. The Aviar X3 is also supposed to be similar to those 2. And they both fall short of what their goal was.

I had a BT Hard Westside Harp and I really liked it. I threw it into too many trees and got really warped. I didn't have a huge issue with the bead on it but I wanted to try a similar disc without the bead. So I went to my local store and they recommended the rat. I LOVED the feel in hand. Its very shallow and just feels very good. I grabbed a nice Teal one with some really nice swirls in it and the stamp was kind of rainbow like. It was probably one of the best looking discs that isn't a tour series.

I immediately went to the course to try it out. I had a few prime opportunities to throw it. I noticed that it was very easy to get where it was going. But I also noticed that it wasn't stable like the Harp was. It still has some fade at the end but its very mild. Its also not as glidey as the Harp is.

I would compare the Rat to a way less glidey Roc. It goes straight and then has a gentle fade at the end. I tried throwing the Rat on drives that I would throw an Axiom Envy or even a Roc on and it just doesn't quite have the glide.

All in all, the Rat is a comfortable and nice looking disc, but it just didn't do what they were aiming for. Its not as stable as the Harp or Zone, nor does it have the glide of those 2. I will say its more comfortable in hand than those 2 to me. If you have a slower arm or want something that's not glidey this might be good for you.

Disc: Star Rat - 175 grams

Feel: The Star Rat is very flat, beadless, and shallow rimmed. Great feel for forehand grips but the rim depth is a bit too shallow to comfortably power grip. The softer Star plastic should hold up to the slower approach throws hitting and deflecting off obstacles.

Flight: 4 Speed seems about right for the shallow flat topped Rat. I normally only use the Rat for forehand approaches under 200' so the low speed fade doesn't really come into play. Very straight and consistent release forehanding allows for pinpoint accuracy with minimal ground action. Wind doesn't seem to have any effect on the slow flights the Rat produces

Impressions & Comparisons: The closest discs I have thrown compared to the Rat are the Innova R-Pro Rhyno and S-Blend Tomb from Infinite Discs. Both of those are probably a little bit slower and also beaded but equally capable.

I find the distance control and forehand torque resistance utilize the best characteristics of the Rat. I consider the Rat a hybrid approach/mid range disc.

I use the Rat for any straighter forehand upshot and for backhand drives that need to finish left.  This disc tends to fly very straight when thrown hard and then it fades late in the flight with not too much skip.  The Rat is my mail forehand approach disc up to about 220'.  I switch between the Rat and the hyzerbomb mortar for this slot in my bag.  I feel that the mortar has more stability and it definitely skips more.  If you're looking for an overstable midrange that is going to have a large skip and dump at the end check out the mortar but if you want a good all around stable to overstable midrange that is going to fly straight with a consistent fade then the Rat is the one.  It has a similar flight to a new roc or roc3 but with slightly less glide.

If you're looking for an overstable forehand approach disc, the Rat is a solid choice in the Innova lineup. For people just learning forehands though, this could be a solid learning disc. It always holds its fade and it feels really nice in the hand. It is similar to a Harp, has decent glide and really loves hyzer lines.

For me, it wasn't worth the slot in my bag between my throwing putter and go-to mid. But for someone with less control over forehand approaches, this could really clean up that aspect of their game.

I expected this disc to be much more stable than it actually is. I was expecting something close to a verdict or Roc3 but it was pleasantly straight. This disc is very straight with some great fade at the end. I love the low profile of the disc which gives it a clean release and smooth flight that glides forever. Because it has a low profile it is also very comfortable for forehands. This is a disc that does require some power to have a straight flight. I would say someone who usually drives 300'-320' would be able to get this disc to go very straight and not have much fade.

Absolutely love this disc. For a beginner that really enjoys throwing sidearm shots, this disc is great. The flat top is very comfortable in the hand. Low glide helps the disc hold a straight line above the ground and lightly fade back right (RHFH). Highly recommend this disc for anyone who has a decent forehand or that is trying to work on it.

The rat is a slow mid range that you can have faith will not float past your target. It is a shallow flat topped disc that is comfortable forehand and backhand. I play at a local course that has consistent high winds and the rat is perfect for headwind shots.

This disc is fantastic!!! I am a forehand only player and this is the best mid range I have ever owned. It flies exactly how i want it to. Following any angle I put it on. Would definitely recommend to any new or experienced players. Also this disc has saved my dad a lot of shoulder pain by giving him a disc he can flick instead of having to backhand any non driver shots.

    THIS IS NOT A HARP/ZONE!

I bought a Star Rat to be an overstable mid range at short distances, but it never flew how I imagined it would. It gets a little turn and a decent fade at the end, but not the fade Innova claims.

Instead of using it as an overstable disc, I throw it for straight approach shots up to 300'. Whether I flick it or throw it backhand, it'll fly dead straight exactly where I intended with a slight finish at the end. This stability is enough to prevent it from turning over, but it is not a meathook.

I was disappointed that it didn't do what I wanted, but I found another way to use it and it has become a staple in my bag.

I threw the Rat on the course today and here are my impressions.

Is this Innova's answer to the Harp or Zone? No. I used to throw a Harp and switched over to the Zone and I can say the Rat really doesn't fly like either of them.

As it's own disc the Rat isn't a bad disc. It has noticeably more glide than the Zone or the Harp and was consistently going a little farther for me than those two discs. Also, it doesn't have the hard, dumping fade at the end that you would think. While it definitely turns as it slows down it has more of a forward push than a hard turn if that makes sense. Also, I found the bottom edge of the disc a bit sharp for my taste as I prefer beaded discs or at least discs with a less sharp edge on bottom.

Overall a decent disc especially if you're an Innova fan-boy. Not sure it will find a home in my bag as I'm pretty happy with the Zone for the role the Rat would fill but I will probably use it some more just to get a better feel for what it can really do. If it comes out in G-star I'll probably try one of those out as I think that plastic would work awesome for upshots without the skip or roll I get out of other plastics.

I'd rate the flight numbers for the Rat more like a 4/4/0/2. Maybe even a 4/4/0/1.5.

The Rat is a very flat disc, and is comfortable in the hand and comfortable to throw.  It is flatter, more shallow than the AviarX3.  The Rat's flight is very, very similar to the AviarX3:  overstable, but not as overstable as a Zone, and on par with a Harp.  The Rat did not get the distance I expected out of it, it really doesn't fly much further for me than my AviarX3s.  So it comes down to personal preference in feel.

As an almost 60 year player who was forced to play either FH or not play at all, the Rat fits exactly what I was looking for in a FH midrange. It feels great in my hand and it throws with a minimal amount of effort for me on approaches, or short drives.. I gave up on Rocs, which had been a trusted midrange for years when I could still play BH, but FH I had a problem with gripping and controlling it reliably.

The Rat doesn't have quite the turn I would like, but it's easy to control and once I knew where I need to line it up, it shined for me. Living in a area of Texas with constant wind, the Rat takes it in stride, something I could never get my Rocs to do. It lands flat and doesn't skip very far at all.

It does take some getting used to, but once you do, it becomes reliable and only changes it's flight by how hard you throw it. Even then, it never deviates from it's stated flight numbers by very much, for me.

The Rat didn't fly exactly like I expected. When I took it out for some test throws I was expecting an overstable midrange approach disc, based on the flight numbers (0 turn / 3 fade). But alas, it actually flies pretty darn straight with only a moderate fade-out at the end of flight. The harder you throw it, the more you can bee-line this this thing on a very straight course with minimal fade. So, it doesn't actually seem to be designed as an "always beefy" utility disc, but more as a precision approach disc.

I did think it was a great disc for forearm. the rim design and grip work nicely with the flat top for a comfortable feel in the hand. I'm not a great side-arm thrower, but I liked the way the Rat flew when I tried.

The Rat is a solid disc. Not what I expected, but very effective in different ways. I also watched my game partner use it for a few drives right off the tee with a lot of success (he throws with a lot more power than I do). He could get it to land with accuracy in the 300-foot range, which you wouldn't expect from a disc with a glide rating of "2" (another number I don't think is quite right). Nice disc. I just hold a star back because it wasn't what I expected or what was advertised, but I still like it.

The Rat is a great new disc from Innova- although I'm not convinced it's an entirely new idea. This reminds me a lot of the Aviar3/AviarX3. It's overstable, but for me wasn't as much as advertised. I'd maybe give it a 2.5 on the fade. When I threw it harder, it went straight for a long time before fading, and it seemed to have more glide than "2". It usually floated past my target when I expected it to dump.

That being said, once I learned this disc, it's really great! The flat top, slim profile was really nice for driving. It is very torque resistant. It did not flip over when I threw it, just held straight forever. I used this for more of a mid-range style of disc, since it would go the distance.

Overall- a very enjoyable disc and it feels amazing in the hand, it's just not the Harp or Zone that a lot of people thought it might be. But that's just my opinion, I bet you could get it to do similar things if thrown on a hyzer. But I feel like a Harp just dumps off more and has less glide. Still, loving the Rat.

The Innova Rat is really similar to the Zone and Harp as a stable approch disc with a perfectly flat top.  The main difference I noticed is that the bottom edge of the Rim is sharper than either of the two similar discs. The Harp has a small bead and the Zone is more rounded which was more comfortable to me for forehand throws. For Backhand, the sharpness doesn't make a difference. The sharpness of it wasn't painful at all and didn't effect my throw, but it was a minor irritation to me. I imagine that over time the edge will wear down and become smoother. I compared all three side by side and the Rat is slightly thinner than my 2016 Ledgestone Edition Zone and a BT Hard Harp. The funny thing about this is that according to the PDGA specs, the Zone (PDGA Height 2.0cm) should be the tallest of the three discs. With the three I compared the Harp (1.6cm PDGA height) is actually tallest.

I love completely flat discs for approach shots and this is a great addition to Innova's line up. Flight wise I was surprised how straight flying the Rat is.  When thrown straight, it stays straight for 80% of the flight. It definitely doesn't behave like a fade three driver and just has a very moderate fade. I'm not sure how glide rating is calculated but in my opinion the Rat glides pretty well, it's definitely not one of those discs that just dumps out of the sky and only gets any distance with sheer power.

Overall, if you are an Innova Guy, I highly recommend the Rat. It is a great stable approach disc for both forehand and backhand throws. If you don't have loyalty to a specific brand, I prefer the feel of the Zone, Harp, or DD Suspect as the flat top stable approach disc.
