at short distances very straight flying although "flying" is not quite right - it flies kinda like a rock.

resists wind influences better than most.

At longer distances like up shots it has a pretty significant fade.

Closest thing I've found to throwing a rock.   Does not add any personality to what I throw.   Less affected by wind than any other putter I've tried.    If I throw it well, no excuses, it just goes in.   If it does not go in, it's because I muffed my throw.   No blaming the disc or trying to figure out complicated flight dynamics.

Basically a super-neutral lid-style disc, with maybe the cheapest feeling DX plastic I've ever felt. That being said, it may be the straightest disc I've ever thrown from 200' and in, almost like a less glidey Glitch.

Pros: Point and shoot, won't completely flip over under moderate power. Better in the wind than a Glitch due to lower glide.

Cons: Feels like a Home Depot bucket lid, horrible plastic feel, very limited max distance because of lack of glide.

First things first, if you want to continue to use the Birdie after growing your skills you need to learn how to up your spin. With its moderately deep rim and thumbtrack, it has a lot of mass to the outside of the flight plate, making it extremely receptive to spin which increases stability on longer putts/throws. I try new putters very frequently, and the Birdie has always remained bagged ever since I got it. It's definitely not a disc to throw off the tee, but it's an inexpensive, comfortable, effortless, and straight flying dedicated putter. I have great putting confidence from within circle 1 with the Birdie, but if there's moderate or greater wind I will opt for something more outright stable.

I'm an amateur and collector. I remember buying this disc years ago in the store. I've thrown it plenty. Besides nostalgia, the rim feels neat in your hand. This one goes in the Innova bin. I only throw duplicates and x-outs.

This is very good disc for beginners and flies very straight on calm days.  It doesn't have a lot of glide, so you won't have to worry about a miss going way beyond the basket.  This disc is fairly soft and seems to grab the chains if it even gets close.  It may be the most forgiving putter I have thrown in regards to chain grabbing ability and keeping misses close.  Unfortunately, I haven't found this disc to be as strong on windy days, nor do I think it is a great putter off the tee.  Bottom line, this is a very good disc to grab when you are first learning the game and want to work on putting technique.  After a while, it is likely that you will grow out of this disc and grab one that can do more off the tee and/or longer approach shots.

I have big hands, and this was the first putter that felt comfortable to me because of the rim depth. I've tried other putters (Aviar, P2) but I keep coming back to this one as my putting-putter. Feels so good coming out of my hand. As an approach disc, this thing will hold whatever line you put it on. Extremely glidey. My only real issue with it is if you hit the basket and it gets on an edge, get ready to putt from outside the circle because it'll roll for days.

A nice transition if you are used to throwing a normal frisbee. Not ergonomic in the hand but can be fun for turbo putting. Wouldn't throw it outside the circle.

Not your classic putter. For beginners who are used to throwing lids this will feel familiar. An excellent approach disc if you're about 150-200 ft. from the basket. Comes into the target like a jumbo jet landing which is what makes it so good for this function. Probably best for players with longer fingers due to the depth of the rim. I have been using an original DGA mold birdie putter as my main putter since before they changed the mold. I wish they would bring back the original, but when I asked him, the steady Mr. Headrick told me when he was still with us that it would never happen. Short of an ace, there's no better feeling than running from 100+ feet out to retrieve this from the basket after one of the previously mentioned approaches finds its way home!

As a beginner, I love this disc. If you need to shape your shot around a tree, but you're so close to the target you can't throw the disc very hard, grab the birdie. For any shots under 50ft with a hard turn, this is my go-to. I usually don't use it otherwise though.

This disc flies straight only because it can be used for a 15 foot putt. The good things about the birdie are how straight it is within the circle and how the plastic is kinda rubbery from the one I tried but anything harder is probably not throwable. I would not really put this in my bag since there are much faster discs with better numbers and a better feel in grip.

Disc - 176 Innova DX Birdie

Feel - The Innova birdie is one of the most unique discs on the market. It is a lid and feels fairly similar to an ultimate disc or even a catch frisbee. It has a thumb track rim and is very deep but for players coming from ultimate or those with bigger hands it feels fine.

Flight - The Birdie, in my opinion, is everything I wanted the Nova to be. I have not been playing for very long, but have advanced quickly, and watched McBeth and other pros throw amazing lines with a Nova. Every once in awhile, I would get a good throw with the Nova but it was very inconsistent and was difficult for me to get a clean release. I tried out the Birdie and was amazed with the flights that it could do. It has a very straight flight when thrown flat or will hold any line it is put on. As I advanced, I enjoyed throwing the Nova more, because it would stick on greens better than the Birdie, but they do very similar things.

Overall - The Birdie is a great beginner disc especially for those coming from ultimate as it has a similar feel to an ultimate frisbee. This disc is still great for more advanced players for slow turning putter shots and straight shots with a lot of touch.

This is one of the first putters I ever used. Once I moved on I was happy I did. The shape of the disc just never clicked with me. The rim is very deep so finding a comfortable grip was challenging. It might be a good choice for your first couple rounds, but I think it's uses might diminish after that. When throwing the birdie, it can flip easily, so you have to be sure to throw it smoothly and lightly. When putting, I felt like it actually faded more than my other putters which was unexpected considering it's flight ratings.

I ended gravitating towards a much slimmer putter(maiden) that just felt more comfortable in my hand.

    Putting Putter Only

The Birdie is straight, just point and shoot. It's also thick and heavy, giving it a unique but comfortable feel in the hand. This was my first putter and I remember it fondly. Just keep in mind, this should not be thrown off the tee. The disc is super slow, which means it just drops. This is great for putts, but terrible for shots. It frankly isn't in the air long enough to do anything with. On the bright side, that also means it fights the wind well. If your new to the game and need a putting putter, try out the birdie.

I use this disc for short approach shots, it works very well. I love how consistent it can throw flat with a slight turn the whole way. However approaching uphill is very dangerous, my friends and I call it 'the tire' because once it stands on end it'll just roll away.

I tried to putt with it for a while but it never felt consistent. If you were to put with this you couldn't do too much hyzer or a push putt for fear of rolling upon miss. I would recommend using it for spin putting more 'floaty' shots, typically 25-ft to 45-ft, where you know it'll land flat if missed.....

To start off I want to clarify that I think this is a 5 out of 5 putter for new players.

Almost all of my friends I talk into playing a few rounds with me intuitively grab this from my stack of discs and they often feel comfortable throwing this disc right off the bat. The downside is that it can be hard to then get them to branch out to other discs.

But to me this doesn't have the capability that many of my other putters do and just don't have space for it in my bag.

But it is always in the stack I bring when introducing friends to the sport.

I wish I had one of these when I started out as it is a great disc for transitioning from ultimate Frisbee to disc golf but by the time I had bought one it really didn't fit my game. Very basic design and feel with a very deep rim that I did not really like. Because it is so deep my dog enjoys using it as a water bowl on hot days on the course.

The Birdie is a very boxy disc and feels odd in the hand for me. It doesn't feel like other disc golf discs, and has a very blunt nose, more so than even an ultimate frisbee disc. It is a very deep disc, with almost flat sides, like a lid to a trash can.

I wasn't a big fan of this disc, but it does fly straight if you feel comfortable enough to throw it well. It's a very slow flier, like playing with a smaller ultimate disc. I would use it for short approach shots that you want to just fly straight and fall flat.

I certainly didn't feel comfortable putting with this disc, as it's so deep and odd in the hand. It flies slow too.

If you come from an ultimate frisbee background, maybe this would feel better and help with the transition to disc golf discs. It just wasn't a good fit for me.

This is a disc I've had in my bag for many, many years, but under a different name - the Piranha. The Birdie is essentially the old school Piranha under a different label.  I use this disc for one purpose only - short approach shots of 125' or less.  And contrary to the disc description, I use it exclusively forehand.  For me, it was an easy transition from the ultimate style disc, and the sidearm flick just fit with this disc, especially with the thumb-trac rim.  Just about everyone I play with comments on my touch and accuracy when I throw this disc.  A gentle forehand flick and I can control a shot around a tree, over a bush, or simply straight at the basket (by simply adjusting the speed and angle of release), knowing this "lid" will land flat with almost no movement after hitting the ground. It is an almost guaranteed park job when I throw it.  The Piranha/Birdie is an indispensable disc for me and will forever have a place in my bag.  Let it be known, this disc isn't for everyone, and probably best suited for the beginner.  But if you master the touch shot with this disc early in your disc golf journey, you'll find yourself pulling it out of the bag a dozen times a round for years to come.

One final note: Although it is a good (not great) putter, it doesn't stick the chains as well as other putters.

I have putted with this disc more than any other disc as it was my first putter. It will fly very straight if thrown with decent speed. Has a nice thumb track on the top that feels good. I keep trying new putters but I have always kept a Birdie in my bag even if I'm not using it as my main putter. It can easily be thrown 100+ feet even by low to medium power beginners. Great for straight shots within a reasonable distance.

I came from an Ultimate background so this disc was one of the first recommended to me when I started playing.  Even with years of Ultimate under my belt, the rim on the disc felt way too deep and too boxy to be comfortable.  Compared to other putters, it felt almost square on the inside edge.  The thumbtrak on top felt too intrusive as well.  Never a disc I could get used to and I gave it away after about a month.

As someone who is use to an Ultimate Frisbee this disc is useful to me. (DX plastic. 172 g.) I use this a lot.

I use it as a straight flying approach shot. It heads straight for the basket with a slight fade at the end. 5/5

I use it for drives through narrow corridors. As I improve I'll probably find better discs for this task. Currently it flys straight and gets decent distance... For a beginner...  4/5

As a putter, this disc has a tendency to bounce out if not put perfectly on the center of the basket. I am looking to replace the Birdie as my primary putter 3/5

If your looking for a approach putter that will fly straight and quickly slide to a halt, this is your disc. For a beginner this is a useful multi-purpose disc.

Update- Still a solid approach disc and now I find myself enjoying putting with this. The Birdie is my go to putter and putting is the best part of my limited game.

When I was a beginner, I was so apprehensive to putt. I just couldn't put enough power behind it and this disc doesn't help that. I feel I have to put all of the power to make a putt within the circle. I might even put it as a 0.5/2.5/0/0

However, I started using this to learn a forehand. It is actually really solid for moderate distance upshots, it flies straight and predictable.

I wouldn't really recommend this disc to anyone, it's aight; however, if you want a surprising forehand upshot disc with little fade it's solid.

PS, I still can't putt if you were wondering.

DX 145g. This is a completely serviceable, straight flying approach disc and putter. People who played ultimate will feel at home with this disc as it is one of the most Frisbee like discs I've ever thrown. Mine was 145g (yes, very light) and one of my first discs/putters. I'd recommend a higher weight in general (160s or 170s). Obviously at the weight I had, any kind of wind had a negative effect, but I would suspect wind would give this one trouble at any weight because of how neutral it is. It's not in my bag anymore and I would point people to a pure or colt if they want a similar flight in a disc golf style mold.

a lot of people hate on the Birdie for is lid and being a "transition" disc and very beginner friendly. But the fact of the matter is, if your inside 30 feet and need an extremely straight putter, this is the disc. I've tried putting with a lot of other putters; DX, champ and KC Pro aviars, judges, pures, rhynos, and always seem to come back to the Birdie. In DX plastic, it gets grippier as it wears and never losses its flight characteristics. On the downside, it does tend to roll if it gets on the right angle, and its by no means a driving putter. All in all, this is a pure putter, 40 feet and in, thats it.

This was my first disc when I was introduced to the game. I liked the feel of it because I was in their target demographic, players who were coming from ultimate. Although I don't have any real qualms with this disc, except maybe the feel in hand, I can't think of a particularly good use for it. If you have been playing for longer than a month you have probably graduated to better putters and approach discs. This is still a fun disc to play catch with to warm up, and you won't find a straighter flying disc anywhere. Speed 1!

I've seen some reviewers not happy with this disc, but they're looking at it the wrong way. This is a putter, and nothing else. You won't drive even short holes with it, but when you're close to the chains, you won't need another disc. This is a slow disc that doesn't turn or fade; it just goes where you point it.

For what it is, it's great. If you're looking for a putt/approach/short driver, look elsewhere. If you want to make some room in your bag for a pure putter, you won't regret it.

I think this disc is great for begginners! This disc will help beginners to work on their angle of release for putts. This disc is also good for approach shots. But once you find your favorite putter you can do what this disc does with that putter. You don't have to worry about over shooting your target no matter what the putter is unless you can't putt correctly. So with that I think it is more forgiving for the beginner players, but won't be needed or wanted by more advanced.

A great strait-shootin' putter. For me it feels a little different and somewhat more bulky than other putters but if you can get past that it throws great. It has nice slow, flowing glide and zero fade. I think it is great for beginners. Just watch out because of the wide, flat side of the outer rim it tends to roll for about 75 miles if it lands just right on a missed putt.

I am one of those "ultimate players getting into disc golf" that this disc is recommended for.  And it was very nice for me early on, especially when I wanted to use a forehand or overhead approach shot, and wanted a familiar ultimate-style two finger grip.

That said, once I got better at disc golf and more used to using golf discs, this disc just didn't offer much to me any more.  Compared to other approach discs I find it is less predictable, especially in the wind.  At this point I'm using a Mako3 or my regular putters for all the shots I would have used this disc for.

I still would reccommend this disc as a good transition disc, and it's a disc I will give to a newbie if they are playing a round with me.

This was first putter I ever purchased when I started playing almost 7 years ago.  Let me start by saying this IS NOT a good driving putter.  That said this is the straightest approach disc I have ever used.  Very slow, dead straight flights.  You can also manipulate the Birdie to make slow predictable turns in either direction.  DX plastic on the Birdie is very stiff and has some trouble grabbing chains.  The Birdie also loves to get on its side and roll 20 feet away from the basket.

As a straight approach putter from 75 feet and in the Birdie is amazing.  Again, I would recommend using other putters off the tee, as well as a different putter for main putting purposes.

This has long been my go to disc for hitting the chains. I have loved it because I like to put some power behind my putts, I like them to fly like a laser into the basket. Putting like this though means that if I miss I end up 20 feet past the basket. The Birdie eliminates that problem because it does not like to stay in the air for too long, so if you miss you still get a chance at making the next putt.

I bought this disc early in my disc golf career in the hopes it would help me putt more accurately.  I had a max weight disc.  I tried several styles of putting with it, but never really bonded with it.   I think part of the issue is that it is shaped very differently than most golf discs (more like a lid).  Some people may find this to be a positive, but for me it just made it feel less comfortable.  It does fly fairly straight with minimal end of flight fade, so I could see it being a good disc for those who like how it feels.  I eventually gave it away when I switched to push putting as it is definately not suited to this putting style.

I carry a birdie for putts that do not have a chance of rolling due to the bigger rim and a couple of shots that rolled what seemed like a mile after hitting the basket for BIRDIE! :)

I used this as my putter for years and it was a reliable but I've found the Aviar R-Pro to be much better but I would still use it in a pinch.

excellent putter, this disc loves to float straight into the basket, 60 foot puts have been no proublem for me using this disk

Funky disc. A lid that works well for playing around and for floating approach shots. More like a freestyle Frisbee than a disc golf disc.

It's a lid. If you like lids, it is one of the few available. It doesn't fit well in my hand, and for a putter feel is big for me.

First of all, I just wanna ask what is up with all the reviews talking about driving the Birdie off of the Tee ? It's a PUTTER. Secondly, a lot of reviews seem to talk trash that it is a beginners disc, good for those transitioning from Ultimate Frisbee, etc. I've tried using a few different putters over the years, and while I'm certainly no pro , no other putter (or any other disc)I've tried flies as straight and true as the Birdie. It follows lines quite well, it doesn't seem to fade out at the end , and it isn't very fast, so if you miss a putt it doesn't blow way past the chains. All that said, I understand different strokes for different folks. Everyone has a different preference , throwing style, etc. I use the Birdie strictly for putting from 30' or less , and I putt a very slow "rainbow" shot type of throw. A friend of mine (best golfer I know) turned me onto the Birdie, and he is deadly with one.

This was the first putter that a friend let me borrow the first time I played disc golf, needless to say I had no clue what I was doing, but it served me fine that day. As I invested in my own putters tho, I haven't considered the birdie simply because I felt more comfortable with other putters. Decent for new players, but for most others you'll want a better putter.

Just tried this disc the other day... I really didn't like it. The rim is to tall and too thin, so it's very uncomfortable. At any distance, it didn't fly consistantly for me. I only used it for an approach once, anything longer where I actually had to throw it rather than long putting it, it fluttered out because I couldn't get a good grip on it. If you like this disc, more power to you, but if you are looking for a new putter, you can find plenty of better ones than this.

I used an old beat up 174g Birdie for a long time. I didn't like the feel of the DX plastic for putting, just to stiff me me, but this is a perfect approach disc. It is not a very comfortable disc, as the rim is vertical. However the thumb-trac on top is really helpful for maintaining control. The strength of this disc is that it flies absolutely straight, no fade at all, just floats gently forwards! I never was able to shape lines very well though, so the Birdie was basically a one-trick-pony for me. The disc doesn't really feature any glide either which I find to be good for approach shots. It gave me confidence to make a run at the basket without worrying about overshooting. For the record, I have recently replaced this disc with an Opto line Pure

The Birdie putter is a fantastic disc for people who have played other disc sports such as ultimate frisbee because of it's flat edge. Good glide, straight to slightly under stable, but awful in the wind. Recommended for beginners

The Birdie is a beginner putter. It flies straight, rolls easily, and easily gets knocked out of the chains. It is a good putter for those transitioning from catch discs, however, it coddles players allow poor tactics to work half-way decently. Get a real putter.

I really like the Birdie for putts. It almost feels more like a Frisbee than a golf disc. This disc flys straight and goes in. One of the most accurate putters from my tests. What more do you want in a putter?
