This was my go-to distance driver when I first started playing disc golf. I am 6-foot tall with bigger hands, so I really liked the wider rim out the gate. For the most part this was an overstable disc for me, mostly because of not knowing how to control nose angle. As I got better I started to get more and more left-to-right movement out of the disc. While my form is far from perfect, I feel comfortable throwing most lines consistently these days. Today, the Captain is a bit touchy, although to be fair, I think a lot of -2,2 discs are. If I don't hit the angle just right, it'll turn a lot more than I was expecting with less fade at the end than I want. I loved this disc for a long time but admittedly I have not bagged the Captain in quite some time.

Excellent understable high speed driver. This disc can absolutely bomb and can even handle moderate winds. Being a wide rim driver, it does require some power to manipulate it. I throw up to 450 feet but if I don't get enough power and speed behind it, it will hyzer out early. Another thing I really like about the captain is that it can handle forehand throws. It works great for very long forehands through the woods. Definitely up there with the best understable bombers

Love it, understable distance like a thrasher but handles the wind a touch better. Not quite as understable as the thrasher.

I have to start out by saying I don't really have any other Dynamic Discs. I picked up an x-out of this disc on my journey for the perfect distance driver. I needed to add distance especially to my rhbh off the tee. This disc has now become one of my favorites for both forehand and backhand. The look and feel of the plastic is really nice. I like the shape of the rim and I can get a nice release nearly every time.

It beat in pretty fast and is now one of my farthest flying drivers every time. Nearly every hole I play I consider this driver along with my Nuke SS and Apex. It is more stable than the Nuke SS but less stable than Apex  and so I think turn is rated appropriately. I get similar distances at the same arm speed as my other favorite drivers and so I might give it more of a 12 on speed. (is 13+ really even a thing?) In windy conditions something a little more stable might be more consistent but overall this is a solid disc which is fun to play with.

Just got this disc as a compliment to my Trespass. The trespass is my most reliable distance thrower when I need a reliable fade and distance. The captain throws very similar to the trespass but with the same release goes further and straighter. The captain is very similar to the Shryke, but for me is a little more reliable for straighter distance shots and is more balanced on the turn and fade. Its a very good straight flying distance driver. The captain is the disc that lands right in between my Trespass and Hades. I recommend it for those with faster arm speed as it needs some torque to fly as designed. Overall its a great disc for intermediate to advanced players.

I got this disc on sale at my local shop in the lucid plastic. I tend to like wide rims on my drivers because it feels good coming out forehand when I drive off the pad. I don't have a great arm speed yet, so this is definitely fast for me, but it's a great disc for narrow shots because I can just rip it and get through the gap before it fades. Overall, tough plastic and a disc to grow into. Very happy to have it.

    Disc - 173 Lucid Captain

Feel - The Captain has a wide rim but it is still very comfortable. It feels good for both backhand and forehand shots.

Flight - The captain has a ton of glide and a good amount of turn. It is a bit more understable than a sheriff so if you like the sheriff but want a bit more turn then the captain is the way to go. It gets great distance for many players but is definitely uncontrollable in the wind. Great understable max distance driver that can get some awesome bombs.

Overall - The captain is a great max distance bomber that would be great for someone with 350-375 feet power.

This is my go to long drive disc. The understability helps me get some max distance. I do not have a super fast arm speed, but I feel like this disc just flies far every time! I can do some hyzer flip to fade pretty easily too. This is an awesome disc and has become one of my go to drivers!

I started off with this driver at 166g as one of my first purchases after an innova beginner set. I primarily throw forearm as I have an injury that prevents me from throwing backhand. This disc was so frustrating to learn. It literally drove me mad some days. However, once you figure it out and you get your form working with the disc, it flies so beautifully and has a very controllable fade. I have since upgraded to a 176g version of the disc and I can put that baby right up on the tee from 300 feet without a run up. If thrown low and fast it will glide and skip. If you throw it off as a roller on the right angle it will go forever. I managed about a 600ft roller once, it went completely off course but the distance was there. Don't try and throw it into the wind or it will just flop. Overall, it has been my favorite driver ever since I figured out how to throw it and sometimes it still decides to do what it wants to.

Love this disc! I have the Lucid Air plastic, 161g. This is my go to driver. I am an beginner/intermediate player with not a real fast arm. I'm able to throw this disc consistently 280 to 300ft. The Lucid Air fits well in my hands.  Compared to other high speed drivers I've thrown, which usually hyzers out quickly because I don't have the arm speed yet, the Lucid Air plastic is more of a 10 or 11 speed. It has a nice slick look and feel. Players with faster arm speeds will probably get great distance.

    Captain by Dynamic Discs

This is one of the most comfortable distance drivers in my bag.  The closest disc in my bad to this would be the Nuke SS by Discraft. I'm a player who started playing disc golf and only drove off the tee with sidearm throws.  As I've become more serious... I quickly learned that the backhand throw is the road to longer drives. I only use this disc with a tailwind on a slight anhyzer line.  This disc will reward the beginner/intermediate player with more distance off the tee if you can get this disc to flex.

The Gold Standard For an Understable Distance Driver

The Captain is a very well behaving understable driver. If you give it a line it will hold that line till it slows down and then fades a bit. That's exactly what an understable driver should do. However, you shouldn't expect the fact that this is understable means it's easy to throw. If you don't have a speed 13 arm (like me) this disc isn't gonna fly as advertised. If you want a full flight you need the arm speed. If you're not quite there yet, the Captain probably won't be as useful.

I can get a great S curve out of this disc but it takes some getting used to. This disc is like a cat. Every now and then it can be awesome, but most of the time it just does whatever the heck it wants and you're just at its mercy. You can depend on 2 things with this disc: it's going to have strong fade and if you throw it into a headwind it's gone forever.

That being said, it's my go to driver...

I have thrown a couple of Lucid Captain's, one first run and another stock stamp.  I found the rim to be a little wide and sharp, so I didn't feel too great in the hand.  This disc was obviously designed to compete with the Shryke, and I think it falls short.  It is more like a 4 glide, and is a little less stable than a Shryke.  It also seems to beat in quickly, so it is hard to trust the disc.  Like sometimes I would throw it expecting it to fade back quickly and it would turn and burn.  Then I would end up overcompensating and throwing softer and it would hyzer off quickly. Overall, I would say just go with a Shryke instead.

Let me start by saying that the Captain I am reviewing was found so it may be a little more beat in.  The hand feel is nice.  There is nothing wrong with the feel.  Now the flight.  I like the Captain.  Unfortunately is not a glidey as I would like.  I prefer my beat in D2 for the extra glide.  I think this disc is very nice; however, it is not my favorite.  That does not mean anything, however.  You may love this disc.  I think this disc is very good even if it is not the best for beginners.

Love the Captain. My max distance is 300-325, and for my arm speed it's a good fit. With a headwind of about 15 mph it'll turn over slightly and not come back, but with less headwind it's my longest disc. After a few tree hits it flies straight with just a slight tailwind. Very predictable. I've been bagging one for about a year and use it often.

The captain is a very good tailwind when applied with alittle hyzer. I did not like the captain in fusion as it seemed to be not as stable as lucid. The captain felt alittle slower than the speed advertised.

The Captain is a long range distance driver from Dynamic Discs. The Captain has a wide rim that is still comfortable in the hand and the Lucid plastic is comfortable in hand and extremely durable. This disc really has some big distance potential, but it needs some room to work to reach it. It has a nice S Flight when given full power, but powered down, the Captain is pretty stable. Beginners and weaker arms are not going to get the full flight out of this disc, as it needs power to get it turning. I would avoid strong headwinds with this disc.

I have thrown the Sheriff and Trespass for a few years, but didn't really like how either flew until they were beat in. The Captain solves this problem. For me, the Captain is the beat in Sheriff I've been looking for. The disc has plenty of glide, feels great in the hand, and doesn't require a huge arm to get a full flight out of it. Highly recommended!

This is not a beginner friendly driver. I would recommend a control driver for a newer player, such as a Thunderbird. I've been playing for a little over a year and this disc is still a little fast for me.

I will say, I do enjoy throwing it. When I can give it enough power, I can get around 325-350 feet with it. In a headwind, it likes to turn over on me with a pretty hard anny line before it cuts back to the left. It'll do the same sometimes when I throw it flat with no angle.

For a beginner, I would suggest a control driver. For someone more advance, I can imagine that they could bomb with this disc.

When I saw the numbers on this disc I thought it was basically gonna be a shryke which is a pretty finicky disc in my opinion. This disc will turn but it will flex out unlike the shryke. The rim feels like a 12 speed which is nice not too thick. All in all I'd say its a nice disc. Nice s curve.

This feels so good in my hands! My particular run has a nice dome that helps to keep it in the air. The captain goes far really quick. I usually will throw a sheriff as my max distance driver, but after a couple rounds with the captain, the sheriff might take a back seat. The captain is definitely more understable, but being that slightly higher speed it feels like a longer sheriff that has less fade. It doesn't take a large effort to get it in that 400 range for my arm. If you like a sheriff try a captain, and I would anticipate players seeing good results as far as distance goes.

The Captain reminds me a lot of my old Katana, nice high speed turn and nice fade at the end. This is definitely a long bomber, and I really like it! I got it further than my Sheriff, mainly because it doesn't fade as soon or as much. As far as wide rimmed drivers go, this is my favorite from Dynamic so far!

The plastic feels amazing, the rim isn't too big, it's a very comfortable disc for long distance. If you're intermediate or up, this will likely BOMB for you.

The Captain is a high-speed driver that is designed for neutral flight. It has an understable release but still fades back at the end of flight, finishing generally straight with a nice S-curve along the way. So, you can throw with some power and get very good distance results. If you haven't built up to a high-speed, wide-rimmed disc yet, this would be a good one to work up to. You'll still be able to throw it with some accuracy in the 200-300 foot range, but can build up to well beyond that.

I give the Captain five stars for being a fun distance driver that can help open the door to intermediate players who want to build up some respectable distance. For players with more power, it can also be a great shot-shaper that pulls to the understable side and holds a line. If you want to throw something a bit less stable than a Sheriff and that finishes straighter, then this is a great compliment to your bag. Great work Dynamic Discs!
