The Solar Death Ray by Doomsday Discs is a one-of-a-kind fairway driver that features flight rings on the top of the flight plate. Those grooves provide an extra grip and unique texture when holding and releasing the disc. It has a neutral flight that will take the path upon which the thrower releases it, providing some understable turn before a nearly equal end-fade. Though the Solar Death Ray will do your bidding on the disc golf course, it may likely signal the destruction of modern civilization as we know it.

This disc is sick. It's weird as heck, but it it's still shaped normally. The hand feel is a little sharp,  and that's where the complaints end. This thing is money. You can give it quite a bit of speed and it'll fly fairly straight with minimal left to to right for tons of distance. It's like a river or passion that you can put more juice on and it's a cool and unique disk from a fun company. One of my favorite discs unironically and I think that it's hilarious, I love Doomsday.

I tested the Solar Death Ray ("SDR") with four other 8 speed discs with similar flight numbers. I didn't have any others with identical Turn/Fade, but found that this tended to end up in a middle ground between those with a Turn/Fade of -1/2, and those with -2/1, so I think its flight numbers are reasonably accurate. It does fly fine, though personally I find that I prefer the other 8-speeds I have, although this would give a slightly more middle-ground result for my 8-speed fairway shots if bagged. The Isolation plastic feels alright, though it seems like a cheaper version of Star/S-blend kinds of plastics. Hopefully the ones I have in this grade will last longer than is suspected. It is definitely a step up from the base Ration plastic.

One novelty to the SDR is the set of grooves it has on top -- the whole way around about an inch from the edge. This could be a plus for grip and control of release (I notice this with some other discs I have which exhibit similar kinds of grooves or texturing), but for my hand size and form of grip, my thumb doesn't ever end up far enough in on the top of the disc to ever touch the grooves on the SDR, so they do nothing for me.For beginners, I think the speed and neutral stability would make this a usable disc, probably more so for forehand players initially. I think in a better plastic grade, and for people with larger hands or different grip than mine, it might earn more stars.

The Solar Death Ray is fun to throw, has an interesting design, and a really fun name, but it isn't super predictable. After getting beat in a little, it becomes more understable than you would expect, and if you put it on even a little anhyzer, it doesn't like to come out of it. If you do keep it straight out of the hand, however, it does fly as expected. The rim on the bottom of the disc raises up a fair bit, and can feel a little strange for forehanding. That could also contribute to inconsistent flight paths. If you are just looking for a gimmicky disc to throw and have a good time with, the Solar Death Ray will give you just that.

What I love about Doomsday is that they just make whatever they want because they want to. This is a unique design and a lot of fun to throw. Great control on backhands and sidearms and can just be manipulated on so many different lines. Get it just for fun and don't take it seriously!!

I think if you ignore the flight numbers and judge it mostly based on the name, the disc makes a lot more sense. If you keep it low you can definitely laser some shots at decent speed and then have the disc stay put.

This needs a lot more arm speed than the stock flight numbers suggest. I struggled to get this disc out as far as any of my other fairway drivers and even a lot of my midrange discs, and it was a consistently punishing experience throwing it. Felt like it was slightly on the overstable side but can be flipped over. My average distance with this disc is considerably less than pretty much any other disc I have in the 4-12 speed range, maybe I just suck with it.

This mold in survival plastic feels super cheap, but decent enough grip for forehands.

I was initially very excited for this disc, as a fairway with ridges was on my bucket list of things to try. The thing about this disc is that it ends up flying like an 8 speed crave with very low glide. That coupled with the overall bad feel of survival plastic (in this mold specifically, I have liked my survival drivers with less sharp edges) it ends up souring the experience. I'm not sure I would recommend this disc for anything but the gimmick, I can't really see any time where I would rather throw this over something like the blackout or a crave. It takes so much effort to get this thing out to reasonable distances for an 8 speed likely due to the ridges which increase drag. TLDR: I don't bag this disc because the plastic does not feel good due to the semi-sharp corners and the disc has low glide compared to other 8 speeds.

I really enjoy this disc. It is a very soft flying disc. If you throw an Alien, or any other disc with rings in the flight plate, it has a bit of the same change up type feel without being as drastic due to the higher speed of the disc I think. A stable disc for sure, but with a slower more gradual turn than you get with most discs of the same speed and under stability rating. If you stress flying fairway discs all the way to the basket or limited landing area with OB or trouble around, it lands much softer than other discs that need to be landed perfectly flat or catch a big skips off the fade and get you get you into trouble on accurately thrown shots. It's also the only disc in the bag that isn't a putter / approach disc that I feel just as confident with on the forehand.
