Profile: Recreational Intermediate, Low Arm Speed, Light Discs. Backhand both Right and Left, Righthand forehand flicks.

First touched a golf disc in April 2018, at age 64, now nearing 70. My reviews are of discs suitable for me, an older man of slight frame with relatively small hands. I hope you find them useful even if just to help you advise new or lower-power players.

Like many people, began with a starter set in 170g range. Quickly realized I’ll never have a power arm so (based on advice from experienced older players) started experimenting with lighter weight discs. After throwing discs from 130g-165g, these seem to work best for me:
• Drivers between 135-150 grams (138-144g sweet spot), with 1.7cm to 2.2cm rims (occasionally up to 2.3cm)
• Midranges from 150-158g
• Putters around 170g, with some 150g-class approach/throwing putters
…but caution—your mileage may vary!

Throw both Right and Left Backhand (started throwing freestyle Frisbee from both sides 50 years ago), and Right Forehand flicks. Not competitive, don’t really care about scores and unlikely to participate in tournaments—I’m just enjoying the feeling of a good shot, and learning what the different disk-types do. Currently having fun throwing a high forehand flick on a slight-to-moderate anhyzer with different overstable midranges, for low speed S-Curve-drop-down approaches; and using a twitchy midrange (5/5/-3/2 Flying Squirrel) LBH for moderate-annie big left turns around trees (works well on my home course’s 160 ft Par 3 with a single tall, wide fir tree half-way to the basket—I find the LH annie turn more controllable than RH spike hyzer).
Current favorites:

Origin Story:
I’m an accidental disc golf convert. I retired in 2017 and we downsized to a home in a walkable neighborhood, near a small college with a decommissioned 9-hole ball golf course (closed 10 years ago) that is now popular with walkers/runners.
While running there, I noticed people throwing discs at pole-mounted baskets scattered around part of the old golf course. I used to throw a lot of recreational/freestyle Frisbee (50 years ago), so in spring 2018, decided to try this new-fangled variation and found I enjoyed it.
Now, more days than not, I walk over to the course and spend a couple hours throwing 18 holes (check Google reviews of PLU Meadows DGC in Tacoma, WA if you’re interested in my home course).
So, just remember, disc golfers come in all ages and sizes!
