Basic Information
Biography: I was a police officer in Southern California for 10 years before an in-the-line-of-duty spinal injury ended my career in 2004. I was initially told I would never walk unassisted again but that prognosis just wasn't good enough for me. I spent the next 18 months learning to walk despite the fact that most of the feeling in my right leg was gone. My oldest son introduced me to disc golf in 2018 and I played a few rounds here and there until September 2020 when I was introduced to the competitive side of disc golf. Having always been an athlete, when I was injured it took a big piece of the 'spark' I carried in my soul and left an immense hole in my life. Baseball, hockey, body building, chasing bad guys.. these were no longer a part of my life. Fast forward to August 2020 and I had become extremely sedentary. I already lived in constant pain but things had progressed to a whole new level of bad. I was the heaviest I had ever been (270 lbs), I was on TWO blood pressure meds and had just been told if I do not get things under control I would end up with type 2 diabetes. For me it was a catch-22.. I was already in pain and exercise made the pain unbearable.. it was debilitating. I knew I needed to make a change and get exercise but what? A few months before I had introduced my then 3 year old granddaughter to disc golf and she loved it. We would go out and play a little short course in the area and that was that.. it was just good Addie and Papa time. Then I realized I didn't hurt quite as much when I played. It didn't make sense but it was true. I began getting out to area courses a couple times a week rather than once a month. Then my life changed.. my oldest son, who had been playing for years, joined the PDGA and began to compete in California. "Wait!! You can compete?" I thought to myself. I joined the PDGA that night and entered my first tournament... unfortunately I didn't realize what I was getting myself into. While it was just a C Tier Flex, I was probably the hardest in Oklahoma.. 24 holes of tight tunnels, long(ish) drives, all requiring more shots than a guy who had been playing 2 weeks had in his bag. I shot a +41. It was demoralizing, it was embarrassing and most of all, it pissed me off! At that moment the 'Disc Viking' was born and a goal was set. The Disc Viking social media and You Tube channels took off had WAY more attention than I ever thought they might and I made this bold goal on them for the world to see, "Come watch a fat, dinged up, 50 year old go from having only played a few rounds of disc golf in his life to competing and touring as a Professional Disc Golfer, ON TOUR, by the 2023 season." A bold goal to be sure but with hard work and dedication I KNOW it can be done.. and I WILL do it! Disc Viking has grown and become more than I could have imagined, with comedic graphic tee shirts being released in August 2021 and requests for videos and more You Tube content coming in daily, disc golf has given me back my life.. and my wife would tell you, it has given her back her husband. Look for us (she's the best looking caddy in disc golf) on the course and in tournaments in your area.. chances are, we'll be there.
